I also don't get what the bad reviews are about. The sweet and sour chicken is amazing. The lo mein isn't to bad either.

I called as my daughter was sick and had to take her home and was met with an arrogant and unsympathetic manager named Brianna. She refused a credit , accommodation or compromise. After driving for 8 hours we arrived and my wrestlers were excited for the hot tub, but it was out of operation. The next morning our room didn't have any hot water. Its very important for wrestlers to shower and practice hygiene before wrestling to prevent the spread of disease. I called the front desk and I was told too many people were showering at that time. After an hour the hot water never came on. My kids and myself had to wash by microwaving washcloths and using those to clean ourselves. The front desk assured me the hot water would be back by the end of the day. After I coached for 12 hours, and my kids wrestled all day we returned to find we still did not have hot water. I called the front desk and they told me we did. I was clear that we did not and they told us they would call someone. No one came to the room or did anything to fix it. Again, we washed with microwaved wash cloths. This is completely unacceptable for a hotel. Since I didn't get anywhere when I talked to the front desk staff I decided to send an e-mail, but they don't have any email information on their website, just the phone number to the front desk.

I would highly recommend this place to anyone. Oh, also, Terry makes the most wonderful breakfasts! I think the snickerdoodle bread is a little piece of heaven on a plate!

The problem is that…read moremy expectations are also pretty vague: if I had a dollar for every night I've spent at inns that are clearly lovable, but that I just didn't love, I'd be staying in a suite at the Grand Hotel Europe. Fortunately, in the absence of clear-cut criteria for that "five star" place, I have the Maguire House to use as a benchmark. When you drive up Cobb Road in the small town of Ashburnham, MA to be greeted by a bounding golden retriever, it's immediately clear that this B&B is a little bit different. For one thing, it's not there out of convenience to a touristy area: when you visit the Maguire House, you are doing it on purpose. This is a huge advantage if you're looking for some true R&R, and Terry provides enough fresh-baked treats to be content barely leaving the 18th-century oasis of her home. Between the beautifully curated collection of antique furniture, the lush goose down comforters, claw-footed bathtubs and innumerable extra touches (the towels, for example, are all perfectly coordinated with bedroom color schemes), it would be understandable if you never went outside here. When my husband and I didn't feel like cross-country skiing last winter, a fire and complimentary glass of wine made this an appealing option. But during a recent June stay, we were scarcely in our room: the view is magnificent and I spent hours watching wild turkeys, woodpeckers and cardinals go about their daily routines. When it was time for a little more action, we took a rowboat out on the lake at the brink of the property. The water was peaceful and perfectly safe, but Abby (the golden retriever) kept watch over us just in case. It should come as no surprise that we will be going back to the Maguire House, though probably not in time to sate my craving for Terry's lemon-blueberry scones. It is a place to bring friends, or a book, or your weekday stress, and lose it in the tranquility that connects New England's past with your future getaways.

The breakfast is outstanding: there is a cooked-to-order menu (with eggs from their own chickens!) and a beautiful set-up in a sun room overlooking the nature reserve in the backyard. This beautiful wooded oasis is just up the hill from Fitchburg State University. The home is lovely, with three upstairs rooms available for guests. With our family along, we spent time in two of the rooms. The Harvard is spacious and has a great shower with streams from two sides. What a luxurious experience! The Hudson is also roomy with a serene view of the pool and the back woods (and chicken coop!). It has a jetted tub, so very relaxing, and a shower too. The beds are huge and comfortable, with what must be a pillow-top on the tall firm mattress. These might be the most comfortable rooms we've ever stayed in at a B&B! Breakfast is freshly made with several delicious options from a menu where you make you selections the night before. The eggs are fresh from their own chickens! The hosts Sarah and Ryan served us in a well-lit "Florida Room" with a view of the flower-garden. And we saw a hummingbird flitting among pink and lavender flowers! On the first floor, in addition to the breakfast room, there's a kitchenette with complimentary beer and soft drinks and snack bars, single-serve coffees, and tea bags with a hot and cold water dispenser, (and both milk and cream, thx!). There is a large comfortable sitting room, where we spent part of a pleasant evening with the friendly owners, swapping travel stories. And from there is an enclosed brick pathway to a rec room with a nice billiard table. To the left is the clean outdoor pool, or ahead is the open covered lighted porch with a ceiling fan, which has a step down to the pool. We took a few laps, then walked down and around to the patio with a fire-pit and a large jacuzzi. On an overcast September day, the pool was cool but not chilly, and the jacuzzi was warm with easy-to-adjust powerful jets. The chicken coop is hidden downhill a bit further, and there's no resident rooster so you might hear some cheerful clucking but no raucous crowing. It's just 1.5h by MBTA train from North Station in Boston to this tranquil hideaway. The hosts are charming and hard-working, always making improvements, always ready with friendly conversation. The price is of course a bit more than some local hotels, but not at all expensive, and our envious hotel-staying relatives all came by for a relaxing evening of wine on the porch.
