$9 Bloody Mary: June 2019 bs. June 2018
Rebecca T.

This is a comment about my brunch experience - comparing June 2018 to June 2019: Last June, right after they opened, I went with some friends on the last day of school for bloody Mary's and a light brunch. We wanted to sit outside. Unfortunately, they weren't serving food outside, but accommodated us and tossed some pastries from the breakfast buffet (inside) onto a plate for us. The pastries were fair - about what you'd expect from a continental breakfast at any mid range hotel - overly sweet and ever so slightly stale. They also charged us through the nose - but it was our last morning of kid-free time, who cares, right? As we were there to mourn the loss of our free time with the kids getting out of school for summer, Bloody Mary's were the key element of the plan. They were very good! Spicy, but not overpowering. A nice balanced texture with horseradish bits mixed in. Garnished with lemon, celery, olives, and a spicy pickled pepper. Perfect for a sunny morning on the back patio. Fast forward to June 2019. We head over to get something to eat and grab a Bloody Mary again. Recalling the pastry predicament of '18, we opted to try the breakfast. It was pricey. I had the prepared breakfast sandwich (scrambled eggs with sausage and cheese on a croissant) which was fair. The side potatoes were good but a bit salty for my palate. They were out of yogurt by 9 am, which was a disappointment. The fruit options were honeydew, cantaloupe, and pineapple. My friend tried the custom egg bar - although she ordered scrambled eggs and received an omelet, she said it was quite good (for an omelet) as was the sausage. Overall, the food was good, but nothing special for $18 a head. But now comes the tragic part. The Bloody Mary. I was so looking forward to the last day of school perfection from last year - imagine my surprise when we received drinks that were HALF THE SIZE of last year. And there was no garnish - what is a Bloody Mary without at least celery? That's right: peppery V8 and vodka. The drink was overly spicy (and this is coming from someone who LOVES spicy food!), watery, and bitter. When we asked about the change, we were told by the cook/bartender(?) that this is they way they make Bloody Mary's (including for their Bloody Mary bar!). I objected to being charged $9 for a sub par drink - especially when she told us that they were "out" of usual accoutrement; fortunately, she did (begrudgingly) comp one drink. This is the only game in Groton if you are looking for a Bloody Mary or brunch on a Wednesday morning. Based on the difference between these two experiences, I will be casting a wider net for 2020's last day of school drink with friends. I do want to note that our server was a lovely woman who was incredibly friendly and helpful! The dining area is comfortable and pleasantly decorated - as are the grounds and lobby of the Inn itself. I am just terribly disappointed by the difference a year made in the quality of something as simple as a basic cocktail. I wish Gibbet, Forge & Vine, The Station House, or the Publik House served brunch - or even hosted a last day (and first day!) of school special "Boo-Hoo Yahoo" brunch. I bet we aren't the only mom's who would attend! Here are the pictures of the bloody Mary's: 2019 vs 2018. Can you see the difference?

A completely lovely experience. Service with a smile and a top notch experience checking in. Rooms are bigger than the norm with many nice amenities including full set of toiletries and a separate make up towel so as not to worry about ruining whites. The bed was incredibly comfortable and I had one of the best sleeps of my trip (with 4 different hotels in and around Boston). I don't know when I'd ever find myself in Groton again (was here for a wedding) but would highly recommend the Groton Inn for anyone visiting the area. Did not have an opportunity to try the on -site restaurants.

Wonderful inn with friendly staff. Not sure about the low rating. I have not found anything we don't like.

NO LONGER THERE. The Old Groton Inn was destroyed by a fire this summer (2011). Just FYI.

Parking was plentiful, and rooms were nice. The front desk staff were the most friendly of folks that I have ever encountered, and the breakfast options, which are included, were perfect to get the day started. There is a short trial behind this hotel that I really had hoped to be able to adventure into, but as I traveled in winter, daylight was limited. The only negatives of this hotel were the over hot heater and underhot shower temperatures. Perhaps folks don't have the same need as I do to scald my soul during showers, but alas, my California blood needs to boil to start my day. Overall, I would definitely stay here again!

We stayed less than 24 hours but I could easily spend a few days here without an issue. Fully stocked kitchen with a conventional oven and full size fridge. Basic kitchen ware and utensils. The complimentary breakfast was full of hearty and healthy options. Fantastic job by the staff keeping everything stocked and clean. My only issue was the two bedrooms were supposed to have two queens and one bedroom only had a full. I drew the short straw and got that bed but since sleeping solo, it wasn't a huge issue. BUT- I do think you should get the room with the amenities in your reservation. Staff was helpful, checking in was a breeze and the whole property was pretty spotless. I'd book again.

I actually really enjoyed this little area, there was a great shopping center that was just across the way with lots of options. The rooms were nice and had a little couch seating area and a fridge and microwave which is always nice for a long stay like my fiancé had. I also loved the downstairs area. I went and worked down there on my laptop one of the days in a comfy couch that had its own little tv to watch something too. Red flag went up. The burger was like a Bubba burger. It was disgusting. I left a review with the hotel only to be debated and challenged on the issues. I called the Marriott complaint line only to be laughed at and then the woman would not give me her name and hung up on me. I called back, got someone else named "carol" on the phone. As I'm explaining the issues to her, under her breath she utters " oh my god". I called her out on the comment and she didn't apologize, just told me to take it up with the hotel. I thought I was when I called the complaint line. I've stayed in hotels though out the country and many other countries. This was by far the worst stay ever. Never again!! The house itself is a 300-year-old farmhouse that has been owned by only 5 families throughout its history. Most of the original structure remains today, giving the place an authentic rustic feel -- not kitchy, like so many other bed & breakfasts. The hostess is cheerful and charming, and more than happy to give you a tour of the grounds (including a tunnel in the basement that was part of the underground railroad!). For us, she made oatmeal chocolate chip cookies fresh upon arrival. We stayed in the Carriage House, which really is a bargain for the space. The two-story suite includes a fireplace, kitchenette, television, desk, couch, armchair, and small table with two chairs. This is in addition to an outdoor porch attached to the unit, and the beautiful upstairs bedroom (with air conditioning). Breakfast was delectable, made exactly to our preferences, and served on a screened-in porch overlooking the gardens. We couldn't have asked for a better experience! I'd definitely stay here again, and would absolutely recommend this to any couple looking for a quick getaway from Boston.

This beautiful wooded oasis is just up the hill from Fitchburg State University. The home is lovely, with three upstairs rooms available for guests. With our family along, we spent time in two of the rooms. The Harvard is spacious and has a great shower with streams from two sides. What a luxurious experience! The Hudson is also roomy with a serene view of the pool and the back woods (and chicken coop!). It has a jetted tub, so very relaxing, and a shower too. The beds are huge and comfortable, with what must be a pillow-top on the tall firm mattress. These might be the most comfortable rooms we've ever stayed in at a B&B! Breakfast is freshly made with several delicious options from a menu where you make you selections the night before. The eggs are fresh from their own chickens! The hosts Sarah and Ryan served us in a well-lit "Florida Room" with a view of the flower-garden. And we saw a hummingbird flitting among pink and lavender flowers! On the first floor, in addition to the breakfast room, there's a kitchenette with complimentary beer and soft drinks and snack bars, single-serve coffees, and tea bags with a hot and cold water dispenser, (and both milk and cream, thx!). There is a large comfortable sitting room, where we spent part of a pleasant evening with the friendly owners, swapping travel stories. And from there is an enclosed brick pathway to a rec room with a nice billiard table. To the left is the clean outdoor pool, or ahead is the open covered lighted porch with a ceiling fan, which has a step down to the pool. We took a few laps, then walked down and around to the patio with a fire-pit and a large jacuzzi. On an overcast September day, the pool was cool but not chilly, and the jacuzzi was warm with easy-to-adjust powerful jets. The chicken coop is hidden downhill a bit further, and there's no resident rooster so you might hear some cheerful clucking but no raucous crowing. It's just 1.5h by MBTA train from North Station in Boston to this tranquil hideaway. The hosts are charming and hard-working, always making improvements, always ready with friendly conversation. The price is of course a bit more than some local hotels, but not at all expensive, and our envious hotel-staying relatives all came by for a relaxing evening of wine on the porch.

I know many people…read morelove this place, and I was so excited to go here but I need to be very honest in the ways they can improve and why 3 stars and not 5 stars from us. The booking and check in process was smooth and easy. The front staff were very friendly on the phone and in person. They walked us around to show us the grounds. Our room was exactly as we expected so no surprise there. It was ready when we arrived, clean and stocked with the basics (towel, soap). We didn't have high expectations for a new/updated room as the photos are exactly how the room was. No fancy frills but clean and absolutely fine to stay in. The beds are not that comfortable but fine. The wall paper in farm house 6 was peeling a bit and wear and tear around the unit was present but we did expect the room to be outdated and didn't have any issues over all with the room. The main reason for our 3 star is really based on food, amenities, and grounds. As for food, do not have high expectations as it's very basic. I would rate it 2 at best, but it's all inclusive and does feed the mass groups. Our waitress the first night was awful, we didn't eat for almost an hour. She told us she was rusty and not ready for the groups yet. Little weird, but I guess she was being honest. The other night/day team were much better and more competent. One odd thing we did notice, food is not in abundance when it's put out for guests to grab. Once something runs out, it runs out. I'm all for not wasting food, that's very important but we noticed often food would run out (cookies, appetizers, and other items to grab-go). For example, the cocktail adults evening, majority of the finger appetizers ran out. Another night, they had watermelon for dessert and it ran out. Ultimately, we can't say we didn't eat, we did, some items just would run out and that was it in terms of offerings. Another concern was the indoor pool, it was freezing. Like unable to swim at all -cold- cold. I would think summer time the pools outside are much better, but we didn't try those as it was too early in the season (April). The toys on the main lawn near the sand pit and volleyball area are all broken and worn out. One of the swings broken and missing. The kiddie barn is broken where the kids play. The boats near the lake are all broken and dingy. I understand this place is more about family legacy and farm life, which yes is special, but most things I found are falling apart around the main lawn area especially. Just in general, broken or not cared for. I am not expecting anything to be brand new or perfect but they're run down. We did most of the kid events and the play doh was all dried out and the crafts very limited. We felt there could've been a few more kid friendly events going on (maybe a movie, more crafts, outdoor music/games, outdoor events). The activity staff seemed really uninterested when it came to many of the events too which was unfortunate. Rather than really engage the kids they often stood around. These are the main reasons for our 3 star review. The concept and legacy idea for families is awesome, but the upkeep just isn't there and not as much engagement as we hoped. I love being outdoors, and for my kids to enjoy their time outside and farm life but they need to clean up a bit here. A few things we did love, to be fair and honest, the farm animals, Pony Ride, Easter egg hunt, and magic show. They were fun and engaging. Also, my kids absolutely loved trying to get eggs from the Hens (despite the limited number, but that's not East Hill's fault, that's just kiddos who claim them all and run away before others get a chance to grab one from the Hens). I also had a massage, that's not East Hill, but their outside vendor they use in their main lobby. It wasn't very good. The lady was nice but the chair massage was not relaxing or enjoyable. She barely massaged me. I wouldn't recommend spending $20 on this add on. This spot has so much incredible potential if they just maintained it better. Such special memories for families to create here. I get leaving the rooms nostalgic and maybe the farm areas, but the grounds, toys, arts and crafts and a few other areas could use some upkeep. Unfortunately that's why this is only a 3 star from our family.
