When we arrived though, we found out that the farm is usually closed during the summer (unless you email the owner in advance) and that their website is the only reliable site to see the hours! Luckily, the owner was around and super nice and gave us a tour anyway! There were goats, a mini horse, a mini donkey, and an alpaca herd worthy of the trek we took! All the animals were really friendly, and the owner was incredibly informative. The highlight was probably an extra cuddly mini donkey that ran to my boyfriend and insisted on being pet! Overall - it was a fun adventure and I highly recommend it! I'm sure it's even better once the weather is cooler!

I am so bad with names but I know one is called Summer. Two pregnant mamas and one baby on the ranch! On the way out, please put a donation in the jar or make a purchase at the store. Plenty of cute socks, sweater, etc. Please note that you will smell alpaca spit (or musty odor) when you enter the shop/ranch and even after you depart. Don't wear fancy clothes.

However, my experience today coupled with my mother-in-law's last week has compelled me to share this. Last week, my mother-in-law brought my two-year-old son and his 95-year-old great-grandfather to the farm specifically so my son could enjoy the tractor-themed playground. They did not necessarily want to pick apples but were amenable to the bag fee simply for the allure of the tractor park. In the chaos of mobilizing a toddler and an elderly man with a walker, she understandably forgot her wallet in the car. After politely asking the woman at the entrance if she could pay on her way out, she was sternly told no and that she had to pay in that instant. She had to trek back uphill to her car to get her wallet only to purchase a $32 apple-picking bag. Charging a family $32 when their only intention is to let a toddler enjoy the playground with his 95-year-old great-grandfather feels incredibly unreasonable. Unfortunately, my experience today was even worse. I happened to be in the area with my two-year-old and decided to stop by because he had loved the tractor playground so much. The farm was closing in 20 minutes, and I thought it was perfectly fair to ask whether he could play for those remaining 20 minutes before we left. My son was absolutely ecstatic when he saw the tractors. He was pointing, cheering, and practically jumping with excitement. All he wanted was a few minutes to play. The same woman at the entrance flatly refused to let us in. She was incredibly rude and unpleasant, showing absolutely no empathy or willingness to accommodate a simple request. I wasn't asking for special treatment, extended hours, or anything that would inconvenience the business. And they were unlikely to make another $32 in the remaining 20 mins of their business day. I was simply asking whether my two-year-old could enjoy the playground for 20 minutes before closing. Instead, I had to turn around and walk away with a heartbroken toddler who couldn't understand why he wasn't allowed to see the tractors he was so excited about. I completely understand that businesses need policies and operating hours. What I don't understand is why those policies have to be enforced with such hostility and a complete absence of common sense or compassion. Especially when we are talking about wholesome PLAYGROUNDS! They should be FREE! These were two opportunities to show a little kindness: one involving a 95-year-old great-grandfather spending time with his great-grandson, and another involving an excited two-year-old asking for 20 minutes on a playground. Both were met with the same unpleasant attitude. It's a shame that such a wonderful place is overshadowed by such an unwelcoming experience. Families come to places like Shelburne Farm to create happy memories with their children, not to be treated like inconveniences. I sincerely hope management takes a hard look at how visitors are being treated, particularly families with young children and elderly relatives. We will not be returning, and I would strongly discourage other families from visiting if they're expecting a warm, welcoming, family-friendly experience.

I bought two dozen eggs on a 2 dozen for $15 deal. I also bought a huge gorgeous heirloom tomato, a purple radish which was art to witness once cut into, and a bunch of leeks. Everything was delicious, and the lady who helped us was extremely knowledgeable and friendly to speak to. We visited the animals outside behind the market afterwards. There were plenty of sheep, llamas and goats to see roaming around. They were friendly and grazing. I did feel bad for one of the goats who seemed to hurt his front leg though. I hope she feels better soon! Can't wait to come back when it gets warmer outside and spend more time with the animals!
