A bonsai haven outside the city. This was a trip! With all the insane Boston traffic these days, the drive here could very much be a good 4 hours (there and back). But don't get me wrong- this bonsai haven is worth the trip. They are one of the most friendly and experienced bonsai shops around. Just ask for the father-daughter duo, Emmy and Michael! As first time bonsai parents, we were rightfully dubious in our efforts to keep these miniature trees alive. But with the help of Emmy and Michael, we left with a new found confidence in our plant rearing abilities. And I'm happy to report that our baby jade bonsai is still thriving. There are a plethora of bonsai variations; choosing the right one depends on where you plan to keep/plant these beauties (we were told). In the colder months, they have services to take care of your bonsais for you. And it seems like many bonsai owners utilize this service! If you want to supplement your bonsai purchase with a bonsai guide book, fertilizer, soil, you name it- they have it here! Unfortunately, buying a bonsai at Bonsai West in Littleton turned out to be a regrettable experience. When my husband and I selected a tree and brought it to the check-out area, we told the staff it was our first bonsai and we needed detailed care instructions. We listened attentively to their advice which was to water and fertilize every 2 weeks. I followed that schedule faithfully but our $500 tree lost more than half its leaves and was clearly dying two months later. I brought it back to Bonsai West for help and advice and was told by a different staff person that the top half of the tree could not be brought back to life. I was told to take it home and water it every 2 days, NOT every 2 weeks. I was disillusioned and pretty upset by the discrepancy in care instructions from both visits. I was further disappointed they didn't offer to nurse it back to health. I took our tree home and faithfully followed their new instructions. Sadly, our bonsai lost the last few leaves a couple weeks later. It was dead. We then called the owner whose name is Michael. He was polite enough but he insisted numerous times that both my husband and I must have misunderstood or misheard the staff the day we bought our tree. We did not. As we were at an impasse, he offered a 50% credit toward a new bonsai or a 50% refund. We drove back a third time to drop off the dead tree and took the refund feeling it was time to cut our losses. The trees at this place are beautiful and it's a wonderful place to visit, but I'd advise buying your bonsai somewhere else. We'll never go back! read more

On New Years Eve i stoped in 15 minutes before closing. i brought in my 2 1/2 foot tall succulent jade. The staff loved it!! I asked if the pot that I showed them would be the right size. It was 3" deeper and 2" wider. The gentleman behind the counter thought and said it is in deep pot now so it should be all set. I was delighted and took a quick tour of the bonsi and left. read more

To my great fortune I was able to get a seat at an Intro to Bonsai class on 6/1. What a great deal for the price: You get a start up tree and all the instruction you need to get going. What stands out is the fantastic array of trees on the property. I have been to the National Bonsai Museum at the National Arboretum in Washington DC. This collection is comparable. These guys all know exactly what they are talking about. No one just works there, they're all Bonsai enthusiasts. Nursery solely dedicated to bonsais! They have an extensive outdoor selection as well as indoor. Two huge greenhouses dedicated to just indoor bonsais. They also do "boarding" for bonsais when people are away on vacation, as well as emergency care (bonsai doctor) for your diseased/sick bonsai. This place is quite breath taking and serene. They have a wide selection pre-potted, in addition to many inresin/plastic pots (needs to be repotted). They also sell glazed and unglazed pots, individually (selection of hundreds+). A glazed pot, depending on size average about $25-$30 Prices for the bonsais range from as little as $25 - $100's and $1,000's. Most average about $75 each. We are buying a total of 8 bonsais as gifts for our bridal party and our officiant. A little untraditional, but that's what we like about it! read more

A greenhouse that sells just Bonsai. It's a lot of fun to walk around, even if you don't plan to buy a bonsai. They have inexpensive to expensive plants, special bonsai pots, books, and other accessories. They have classes too, if you want to DIY. I haven't taken a class, so I don't know how good or fun they are. Be sure to go in the spring or summer when they have all their really old and cool bonsai outside in a little bonsai arboretum. I have been in a few times and the people there are very nice and helpful. They'll honestly tell you if a plant is difficult for a beginner. I love this place. I will elaborate, but that's the nutshell version. Been going here since I was small (probably 30 years now, maybe a bit less) and it's just a breath of fresh air when you get there. They still have nursery and lightly trained trees for the novice, extensively trained trees for the seasoned expert, as well as several greenhouses home to different climate-needing trees. It's lovely set in the forest in Littleton, a bit of a drive but totally worth it. Just got myself a Brazillian rain-tree and will most certainly be back. I do want to check out one of their training courses soon (you can only learn so much from books). Wonderful, keep up the great work!! read more

Don't judge a book by its cover It is an absolutely wonderful place dedicated to Bonsais. The staff are friendly and helpful. The interior garden is great. On the weekend, the parking lot is crazy ( not well designed so it's tricky to get on or off the main road-be careful). That aside, it is worth a trip even if you don't buy a bonsai but you should because it will last for decades. Also, the prices are fair. I didn't know until I checked their website that they also can hold your plant while you are on vacation for a good price. My last bonsai died under a friend's care so this year I am bringing my bonsai to bonsai west while I'm on vacation. read more

This is a nice nursery to visit if you are an experienced Bonsai owner. However I have to agree with the other reviewer who said the staff was "condesending". We bought a small bonsai as a gift and it died within 3 months. It was watered twice weekly. When I called to ask if this was unusual - they brushed us off and said it was basically user error. I love Bonsai West. I discovered it accidentally and have become hooked. Even if I don't necessarily buy something it's a great place to get ideas for the bonsai trees I already own. I have aquired 7 trees so far and they are doing great. I bought both stock plants which I've potted myself and trees already established in bonsai pots. The staff has always been really helpful and friendly. I often suggest Bonsai West to people when they ask where I got my trees. You should really check it out. read more

The trees here are beautiful and there is a nice range of prices and types of plants for sale, but frankly, I found the customer service to be poor and outright condescending. Not just for myself, but witnessed other customers being spoken down to in a very patronizing manner.
