It's a small intimate space, and actually what drew me in was the live music. There was a female performer who was so incredible that I bought her CD even though I don't have a CD player... Anywho, I ordered a cocktail and then bellied up to the little wooden bar. The owner served my drink and she was so wonderful and gave us some local recommendations. The Viola Lee Aviarion featured locally distilled Vikre Spruce Gin and was pleasantly balanced. We loved all of the assorted vintage glassware too. We will def pass through here again when we're in the area for craft cocktails and convo with locals.

Had me twirling like I was auditioning for RuPaul's Drag Race. The energy? So high I nearly ascended. But then--cue dramatic music--came the bartender. Miss Thing was serving cold stares and lukewarm drinks like it was her personal protest against happiness. I asked for a vodka soda, not a vibe check. Sis, it's Pride. We're here to celebrate, not survive emotional warfare at the bar. Still, the night was a glittery dream and the people were pure magic. I'll be back, but next time I'm pre-gaming with kindness and a flask.

Honestly, they've been there so much for me in the past (when no one else was there, they were) that any one of them could ask me to help them move a heavy ass hot tub, and I would in a heartbeat. The owner, Cade, is THE shit. Just look for the tall guy with the sweet hair and badass button up shirt and you'll know him when you see him. Best part is because he's so cool, all the people he hires to work for him are cool, thus the people that frequent there are cool, so by going there YOU are COOL by association. It's like one big cool club and everyone's invited. The amount of romances and babies that have resulted from ACES ON FIRST is probably what keeps the population of Duluth above the 2.1 children-per-woman needed to prevent a society's extinction. Do yourself a favor and pop in Aces. I know that when I die and I enter the white light, on the other side I'm going to emerge into Aces. Heaven IS a place on Earth...and it's called ACES. A Fantastic Transformation and a Great Addition to Superior…read more Having been to the building when it was Shorty's, I have to say the transformation into Mazi is absolutely incredible. From the moment we pulled up, it was obvious how much work went into the renovation. The parking lot was completely redone, and the entire exterior looked fresh and inviting. Once inside, we were really blown away by the decor. The tables and chairs were comfortable and stylish, the bar area looked great, and there was even a nice lounge area. The bathrooms were also very well done. Overall, they did an exceptional job completely refurbishing the building and turning it into a beautiful restaurant. There were six of us celebrating a birthday, and we started with a couple of appetizers. The smoked olives were very well received, and the bone marrow was excellent. Our waiter also recommended getting some additional bread to go with the bone marrow, which turned out to be a great suggestion. Our young waiter was fantastic throughout the evening--very attentive and helpful, although unfortunately I can't remember his name. We also enjoyed a variety of cocktails and mocktails, which were very good. For dinner, three of us ordered the fish and chips, one had the mussels, one ordered the New York strip, and I had the chicken and waffles. The fish and chips were a huge hit. The fish was walleye, and the portions were enormous--so much so that there were plenty of leftovers. The walleye was cooked really well, and the fries were excellent. I had the chicken and waffles, and they were really, really good. There were jalapeño bits and a barbecue-style sauce that gave the dish a nice combination of sweetness with just a little bit of heat. It was a generous portion, and I was definitely full when I finished. The New York strip was also very well received, and the mussels were cooked perfectly and had great flavor. The only minor criticism was that the broth for the mussels seemed a little on the salty side. Otherwise, they were excellent. Of course, we couldn't leave without dessert. We ordered the crème brûlée, chocolate mousse cake, and cheesecake. All three were phenomenal. In fact, we couldn't even agree on which one was our favorite--which is a pretty good problem to have! Overall, Mazi is a fantastic addition to the Twin Ports dining scene. The transformation from Shorty's is remarkable, the atmosphere is beautiful, the portions are generous, and the food was excellent. It's clear that a lot of thought and effort went into creating this restaurant. We'll definitely be back and will be recommending Mazi to others looking for a great place to eat in Superior.

The restaurant is new so giving grace there. They let me sub out the potato and I had broccolini. It was awesome. I had their signature cocktail with tequila. Service was excellent! Not only was our server polite, efficient and attentive, but she anticipated all of our needs better than a 5-star restaurant server's expectations. I would happily deal with the outdated backwoods decor and slightly dusty window shades if they can keep their prices this low! Get the prime rib steak dinner if you can! My steak was perfectly prepared medium rare as ordered, and it had a nice crispy char on both sides. I highly recommend the side salad because it had the best croutons with a light and buttery crispy crunch like a baked croissant. I opted for a loaded baked potato for a dollar upcharge and was very happy with the amount of bacon, sour cream and butter that was added to my baked potato.
