Jackson's Wine and Spirits has been a staple for well over 20 years. I started shopping there on a suggestion from my brother who lived down the road at the time. My first big purchase came when I needed to buy some wine for a company Christmas party; and I've been a loyal customer ever since. The wine selection is vast, and the staff that I've had the pleasure of meeting are highly knowledgeable about the entire product offering. I have been going to Jackson's for a few years and like to support small business in Lafayette. Once in a while service will be o.k , however for the most part the staff is rude and condescending . For some reason they do not like when a customer ask questions and recommendations for various wines & spirits. Seems I am not the only one that gets the eye roll (see other experiences below). Does not makes sense to do when a customer comes into the store to spend a lot of money on gifts for co-workers and the Jackson's staff is arrogant with communications . And it always is the same staff members who have condescending behavior . Maybe the staff should be humble when customers ask questions and suggestions for wine and spirits. Don't they want to sell products? I can just go down the street to BEV MO where the prices are cheaper and staff is helpful. Also, Safeway prices are lower and there is always friendly helpful staff in the wine & spirits aisle. The wine & spirits are the same at both Safeway and Bev Mo so I don't see the point of purchasing from Jackson when it is turns into a horrible experience. read more

Came to this place with a friend because they had some exclusive cigar brand you can't find in the East Bay. I had no plans on purchasing but Dana was so amazingly courteous that she sold me on some bitters I am to use for my next cocktail party. I also bought some beers that looked like a good time that I am excited to taste. Though I wanted a 6 pack, we were only able to find 2 so Dana comp'd me an extra beer to taste for the inconvenience. She made sure the brew was similar and was very attentive to what I like and what I don't. As a huge tequila connoisseur, their tequila collection was good but not great. It was missing some Latina/o owned brands like La Llorona. Incredible selection of liquor across the board with excellent customer service particularly Dana! There was another attentive employee there helping my friend but I didn't get his name. I see some reviews about the staff not being friendly so I have to say this was a far cry from my experience there. I'll be back here when my bar runs dry as its one of the best small shop spots in the Bay for spirit needs. read more

I wanted to take a moment to give kudos to Jackson's Wine and Spirits in Lafayette. I grew up in Lafayette, so I've known about this marvelous place for a long time. I couldn't find the "right sized" ice for a nonprofit meeting two days ago, and I remembered Jackson's used to carry ice. They still do! When Blair realized I had already gone to Safeway and didn't like their size (or price), he said to me "Don't worry about paying - just take it for free." WHAT???!!! I mean...I wasn't even buying any liquor that day! Look...no one gives away free stuff nowadays, but this was especially helpful since I needed it for a nonprofit event. We need more people willing to help - to do the right thing - especially right now. Thank you Blair, and Jackson's Wine and Spirits, for restoring my faith in humanity and kindness. I was in town and grabbing some decent wines. David and his crew were excellent in all their picks when I asked for varietals at a certain price point. Great selection, but just slightly overpriced on most things. However to me that would be okay because I would like to support local indy shops more, but the attitude of most of the staff is just snarky, unhelpful and irritated. So overpriced and unhelpful/rude, hard pass Final straw; I asked to see a few high priced bottles in a case and the amount of attitude and eye roll I got was on an industrial level of bad attitude. They keep their "allocated" bourbons in a locked case, and I wanted to see the details on a few. It was I like I asked the clerk to move a pile of boulders, not just unlock a case and move a few bottles around. I was looking at spending $800+, so I don't think this was a huge ask. If it's just too much of inconvenience, I can just take my business elsewhere, which I will. There are 4 other shops in Lafayette alone with the same, or better spirits/bourbon options, for the same or less money. read more

I've given this place a few tries, but every single time I have gone in the staff is rude. One guy in particular seems to enjoy belittling and disparaging the cities where his customers live. I don't go to a liquor store to hear crackpot conspiracy theories and hate. I've never felt comfortable buying anything because of the awful attitudes at the register. This neighborhood liquor store has it all! Helpful staff and a wide variety of beverages, alcoholic or not. If you are not a wine drinker, don't worry, the "Spirits" sections of this place will fulfill most of your beverage necessities. I was impressed that they had a nice selection of brands and flavors found amongst the aisles. A large variety of beers, mixers, carbonated sodas, flavored waters and bar ware are all conveniently and easily displayed. The minute we walked in, an employee asked if we needed help. Our friends were brand specific on what drinks they were interested in. The staff member immediately grabbed the items for us and had them ready and waiting at the counter for check out. All that was left for us to do was continue some leisurely browsing and then pay. That was the fastest service I have ever experienced! I'm sure it was just a good day.... Highly knowledgable staff large selection of wines will special order items on request. The beer selection rocks such a large variety of the best microbrews available.The over all feeling is warm and friendly .They also have Apple Pay so I can use my phone to pay no matter what card I choose to use. The prices are low not to mention the 6 bottle 10% off as long as the price does not end in 7 which represents an item is already on sale. I have read other reviews on yelp and was disappointed in the negative. Ones any one who is disappointed in the store should give them a second chance .I love this store. read more

I'm not a huge wine buyer, so maybe if that is your primary use case for liquor stores you'll appreciate Jackson's more than I do. I'm more a beer and spirits guy myself, and Jackson's is not the best on selection, price, and service for those. They have a great selection of wines, and often hold that one kind of hard to find Pinot you're hunting. Gotta give Taylor's that. It's not a discount store by any stretch though, despite what was painted on the front a few years ago. I always find the clerks kinda rude and not super helpful. I bet if I went in all somm'd up it might be different, but who needs that when you're trying to buy some Sierras? They don't take American Express and seem to relish turning down those cards. That whole thing -- not taking card with the second most consumer spending in the US is kinda weird, right?!? (from label): "strikes a perfect balance b/w caramel maltiness and its aggressive hoppiness". 3.5 stars -irish style red ale (22 oz, 6.5%, 3.69+) smooth drink, sweet tasting drink with caramel tones, medium buzz. 3.5 stars -brother david's double, abbey style ale (22 oz, 9%, 6.99+) very hoppy strong brew, slight bite, buzz. slight chocolate taste. 3.5 stars on draught -dedicated parking in front so that's not a problem -most beer pricing better than whole foods. -big wine selection but not my thang now. read more

Jackson's is a wonderful spot for wines and spirits. The staff is knowledgable, and in the case of one guy super-knowledgable on the background and history (recent and not-so-recent) of the various Scotches, Bourbons, Cognacs, etc that they stock. Very deep collection of high end spirits and a wide and interesting collection of wines, both local and imported. It's fun just poking around at what they've got. Prices are competitive with BevMo and often beat it by a significant margin. They also host regular tastings for a very reasonable price. Parking is easy; they're in a largish shopping center and it's almost never crowded directly around the store. read more

They have a lot of choices of alcohol, however their service sucks! I had few bad experiences with the vendors. I tried to give them achance, but I decided that it is not worth it. The other day I went to get a bottle of wine for my guests and I asked one the vendor ( a man in his 40s or 50s, with a beard) about how advices. He refused to answer any of questions. I uSed my own judgement, I get the wine and at the end I told him about his bad knowledge of the product his selling and his bad service, plus he was so rude! read more

Fu*k them. I was sent on a mission to buy wine and had a short list. I was in the area and Yelped to find a wine shop with a large inventory and stopped in Jackson's. The store is large with three guys busy cleaning bottles. When I showed my list, the guy just pointed over to the section. Yes, I know very little about wine, but I could have used a bit of help. So upon check out ($75), another ass tells me that next time he will show me a "real Malbec" to try. Sh*t, why didn't you tell me before. Rarely do I give a one star review. Came here on my hunt for Japanese Whiskies! I had called prior to stopping here in person and was helped by an older gentleman. He put me on hold briefly and was kind enough to walk over to the shelves to read off which Japanese whiskies he had in stock. After work I stopped off at the store and could only find 2 of the 4+ that he had mentioned. I walked up to the counter and there was a different gentleman at the register. He walked me back over to the whisky shelves and pointed out the other ones that I couldn't seem to find. They didn't have the exact one that I was looking for, but they did have Yamazaki 12 and Nikka Pure Malt Takesturu. When I went back to the counter, there was an older gentleman at the register. He asked if I was the one who had called earlier and I nodded, "yes". With a smile, he thanked me for coming in. I will be returning in the future to pick up more whisky/whiskey and wine. I didn't have a chance to browse their wine selection, but they have a lot! I'm excited to see and try their local offerings! read more

Big bottles, small bottles, medium bottles. You can get your Cristal on or a little less than swaggy Moet. If you're not sure, the employees are always here to help. Trying to find something unique? You should usually call down here first to see if they have it because they just might. That goes for all types of booze. Not just champagne either. The staff if pretty awesome. I have gone here many times. My buddy used to work here. I like the place but it seems as of late I have been running into the same guy. Perhaps MAUREN Y. Also encountered this guy. This guy never smiles. He is never friendly. He looks like he hates his job and the customers that come in. I went in today and politely asked if there was any Pliny. He told me if there was none on the shelf then they do not have any. Not true. I have asked before (4 times to be exact) and they had some in the back. He never looked up from his stocking work to even try to make a sell. He could have offered me any one of the other beers in stock. Nope. Zero F***s given. I have had good experiences in this store with many other employees. However, today was the last straw with no smile guy. I have to give this bad review. They have a great selection and ok prices. However, the staff (most all of them dont smile and seem like that dont give a S*** about customer service) but no smile guy is the worst. I will go in an shop from them again but if I see him in there I will turn around and leave. I can go other places to grab my booze. I would rather not be around him. read more

I knew I was in good hands when I easily found Templeton Rye (from Iowa of course) and Whistlepig in the Whiskey section of Jackson's Wines and Spirits. A few feet over is an incredible wine selection and with a nice range of price points. The beer selection also checks out well. I went in here to search for cider upon my return home from London. I was with my mother, and a man who I think is the owner came up to us and harassed us in front of the refrigerators about how we would get in trouble because I was underage. This was ridiculous because I AM ACTUALLY 21. She was buying but I did have to show ID, which I understand, but there was no need to be so damn rude about it. If you're going to pull something like that, kindly wait until the customer gets to the counter, maybe? The prices were just okay, and it was a kind of nasty experience. The Best Wine Shop East of the Tunnel When I have the energy to stand the Whole Foods Lafayette Plaza (it requires fortitude as you dodge the loaded new Beemers and Benzes driven by the entitled 1%) I will come here to find a good bottle of wine. They carry Turley Zin on occasion, and at excellent prices. However, Bubba behind the counter acted like I was asking for kryptonite the last time I asked for it here. And then, he looked like he was going to punch me for accusing him of wearing pink underwear when I asked for Muscat de Venise, which I also had previously found here. I didn't risk asking about Zind Humbrecht. So, while you will find some excellent wine (Chablis Premier Cru; Vouvrays, Rhones, other Burgundies, Tuscans, Alsacians) you will often find the personnel cave men who act like knowing about fine wine is an accusation of being French, eating quiche, reading books, or wearing lace hose. They'd clearly be more comfortable selling beef jerky and PBR. If you can look beyond the personnel, and fend for yourself, great wine is to be found here. Small talk with the personnel isn't allowed unless confined to monosyllabic conversation, preferably about sports. In other words, there is a severe absence of a service mentality here and some inherent loathing of the product people come here to purchase. It's sort of like going to Costco/you're on your own. At Costco, however, they don't make you feel small for liking nice things or having a three digit iq. read more

I walked in about a year ago to get a pack of cigarettes. Horrible experience. The nasty old man behind the counter told me he did not except temporary licenses as ID. That is all I had because my license had expired so naturally the DMV gives me a temp. I originally started coming to Jackson's because their liquor prices were so much better than BevMo, but I've noticed a disappointing trend upward in pricing for most items over the last few months here. I believe it's based on when they re-stock an item and realize the price was set too low. For example, over a few months time, I bought up all their stock of a hard-to-find rum. When they re-stocked it, the price went up significantly, over 20%! Jackson's does have a few items that BevMo doesn't carry, especially in the rare rums and scotches. But I asked Jackson's if they would carry Ardmore scotch and they said they couldn't find it anywhere in the USA, but Bevmo actually has plenty of that brand in stock... Friendliness of the staff seems to depend on how they feel that day, but I'm usually just ignored. read more

Jackson's held a bottle for us based on a call from their sister store in Concord, and we headed right over. Whiskey was worth the trip, and I need to come back when i'm in the area again and get a better look at the selection. Best high-end French wine selection on this side of the Caldecott - outstanding prices on liquor as well. They supply many of the local restaurants, and have an amazing assortment of scotches in stock at all times. You'll find mroe French and California wines there than wines from Italy, but ask for what you need and they'll likely be able to track it down for you as well. You can find all sorts of amazing wines in this local haunt (been there for more than 30 years), but don't expect a friendly staff - they are knowledgeable, but can be downright rude if you or someone you are with isn't as snobby or knowledgeable as they are. Given their prices and the staff expertise, I still spend several grand a year there - imagine what it would be if they were gracious... read more

Three quarters of the store is devoted to wine and any budget can find a great wine here, the guy's working the store know there stuff as well unlike typical liquor stores. Jackson's Wines and Spirits is the best place in the East Bay to buy wine and spirits. Kip, Phil and the staff are extremely knowledgeable and helpful with current trends and old standards. Need a good Italian Barolo or a Japanese Single Malt?, or a rare Bourbon or Vodka?, just ask, and odds are they know about, have it in stock, or can get it for you. Shame on Jackson's Liqours! I've been patronizing this establishment for years, maybe once every other week or so, because of their outstanding selection of beer. Never again will I spend a single dime at this store. I'll gladly go to Diablo Foods, Whole Foods, or even BevMo. They have comparable selection and pricing. AND THEY'RE NOT MEAN OLD COOTS! They actually treat their customers like they want the business you bring them. Jackson's could care less, unless you're spending big bucks. Sadly, it wasn't just one single experience that's prompted me to sign up with Yelp and make this declaration. On a number of occasions, I've walked out of there feeling regret that I gave them yet another chance to be nice. No more. Let me say that there are a couple of young guys there that have been very courteous every single time. In fact, I can usually tell how it's gonna go when I walk in and see who's working the counter. Now, on to the rudeness. Old man, I don't know what you're so pissed off about all the time, but you stink! You're bad for business. Is it your business? You sure act like it is, and that's what makes it all the more disappointing. I've seen you follow some patrons around the store, picking out wines for their parties, waiting on them hand and foot because of the dollar amount that's gonna pop up on that register. I buy a six pack, or maybe a 22oz. every now and then and I don't get anything but sour expression, "Next in line!" and how much I owe you. I'm not saying I want a hug, or to talk about the weather. But a smile and a "thank you" would've done a world of good. And the other guy... he's probably 35, but looks well into his 50's. Rode hard and put away wet - with an attitude to match. Grumbling, pissed off at the world - and we all owe him something. Rude to the nth degree 100% of the time. Like I said, the two younger guys are great. If they were there every time, this review wouldn't have been written. It's common to hear that young people these days have crappy work ethic and wouldn't know good customer service if it sat on their face and wiggled. Ah, sweet irony! Having spent most of my liquor-purchasing life in Massachusetts, I may be biased in favor of liquor stores in more reasonable-as-regards-booze states, but nearly every time I visit my friends and family in the Bay, I make a run to Jackson's for inexpensive, quality liquor. This review covers only liquor, not beer and wine. Their selection of whiskies/whiskeys and brandies is superior to any I have seen save for one shop in Manhattan and a few shops in Scotland and France, which, given their proximity to the goods purveyed, is to be expected. Equally important is that the prices are nearly competitive with Trader Joe's, and beat any normal liquor store, including BevMo. They have a weakness in cordials/bitters. They did stock Antico, but didn't have yellow Chartruese, and had Fernet and green Chartreuse only in 375mL bottles. The price of a 375 of green Chartreuse was greater than $30, which is excessive. I bought a bottle of Lagavulin for $56, which is what I would have expected to pay for it in 2003, back when the Euro was on par with the dollar. Their prices generally for single-malts is hard to beat. read more

Best place for beer, wine and liquor in the Lamorinda area. This is one of my favorite place to go for local craft beers and harder to find spirits. Good selection of Russian River Brewing Co, Bear Republic, Lagunitas, etc. and imports too. The wine selection is legit too. I found a bottle of a specific St George Spirits gin here that I had only been able to previously find at the distillery and I got it for ten bucks less at Jackson's (had to buy a few bottles). Convenient to get to, prices are great and the people working they are helpful. read more

Jackson's is my "go to" store for wine, beer and absolutely for spirits! They have the best selection of bourbons of any liquor store that I have visited outside of Louisville, Kentucky. The staff is knowledgeable and happy to spend time with clients - sharing background on liquor categories in general as well as specifics on particular brands. They have also given me great ideas for cocktails - which is important when you throw a "First Friday Cocktail Party" 12 months a year! The prices are some of the best that you will find around. Ok, I have been a regular customer at this store for 10 plus years. I think they have an exceptional selection of well priced spirits and wines. So why the 3 star revue? Because with one notable exception, their staff seems really unappreciative. (They wait for you to thank them for being unhelpful, to which they quickly answer, "YOURE WELCOME"). They never say thank you for coming in, and patronizing our establishment. They are so unappreciative! Maybe the ownership is mean to them, so they don't feel like they can be nice to their customers, maybe I don't look like I drive a Maserati. Either way, they should really learn how to make ALL their customers feel appreciated. read more
