We arrived after a long day of driving, looking forward to a quiet, peaceful view of the Grand Tetons, only to hear the sound of jackhammers. There was construction scaffolding, rubble, and dust everywhere on the front and sides of the lodge. We never got the supposed email informing us of this and offering optional rooms. No, it wasn't in the spam folder. Yes, they had our correct email. We checked out the room--our windows looked directly upon the area where workers climb up and down the main ladder to work. There was lots of rubble and dust and the jackhammers were deafening. The lodge is having the stucco facing removed from the entire building and redone. Also, the room was dark and had a musty, mildew smell. It had old, dated furnishings and carpet. At $400 a night, they can't update their rooms at least once every 20 years? When we respectfully asked for a room away from construction, the manager's response was "Do you want to just leave?" Seriously? So welcoming. We booked a room a year ago and where were we going to find another room at a different hotel at the last minute? We were told everything was solidly booked. She then offered us a different room, which also was in the construction zone. More hemming and hawing. Finally, she offered one of three cabins. We chose one the furthest away from the lodge. It was quiet, newly furnished, much roomier than the lodge rooms, good wi-fi connection and comfortable--same price, so why she hadn't offered it from the beginning, I don't know. We have stayed at other National and state park lodges and are used to them being bare bones, dated, and rustic. We like being centrally located within a park. But Jackson Lake Lodge should not be charging top tier prices for those lodge rooms during construction and they should let customers know well ahead of time about construction, so they have other options. Once we had agreed to the cabin room, we were given complimentary tickets for breakfast and drinks. During our 4 days there, we saw plenty of other disgruntled people complaining each day at the desk about rooms. Please know that if you stay in the lodge rooms and the weather is more than 66 degrees, you will want to be able to open your windows and will contend with the dust, workers, and deafening jackhammers, if you're in the construction zone. They start up between 7:00-7:30AM and continue through 4:30-5pm, Monday-Friday. If you have a scenic view room, your windows face not only the mountains, but direct sun all day, so they will get hot and there is no AC, but the jackhammers will be slightly muted, as they are on the opposite side of the building i.e. outside the rooms across the hall. Food: the Mural Room faces the sun, so shades are pulled in the afternoon/evening, dimming the view. No one is guaranteed a mountain view, so you may be seated in a dark corner. We brought our own breakfast and lunch options, which we kept in the cabin's mini fridge. Grabbed dinner at the lodge's grill and the food was good. In September, one of the parks other food options that serves pizza is closed up for the season and we were told by a park employee that the other pizza option is not that good. The lodge's bar served overpriced and watered down drinks, but if you can grab a table on the patio, the view is gorgeous. Those tables are only for the bar, not hotel guests, but you can walk on the path in front and below the patio. The construction looks as if it will be ongoing through at least the end of next summer. They have extensive work to do. read more
