It is known as the Knott house because the last owners were William Knott and his wife Luella. William worked as the state treasurer during the times of the great depression. This house shows a lot of the items his wife collected and the kind of lifestyle they had back in the day. The museum gives daily tours and the day I came there were free mini versions. We were shown the downstairs floor of the house. It has old furniture that was brought throughout the country and though some of it does not completely match, the house looks cool. Poems were written to pair off with each item of furniture to give a little entertainment. All of the decorations and furniture are fragile and nothing is to be touched without cloth gloves. The staff is super friendly and welcoming. The house is decorated for the holidays and so it is ever changing style while maintaining its history. If you ever seem to wander around downtown Tallahassee or want to get some easy education then stop by the Knott House.

Yes, the bridge is locked off from all foot traffic by iron gates. I'm guessing that this was done to prevent the neer-do-wells from filling the interior with graffiti, something I've seen done to other covered bridges. There is access to the bridge from both sides of the creek, but the far side has better parking and even a few picnic benches. The view from there is way better too. You begin your tour from the visitors center, where you pay admissions ($5.50 pp for the grounds & $16pp for the main house tour), watch a historical video on the plantation, and view the exhibits. Since we drove up from Panama City Beach, FL we only had time to tour the grounds, not the main house. We spend a couple hours touring the grounds and still didn't see everything. So much to see! The stables were really cool! We met a nice lady feeding the draft horses and she introduced us to all the horses and mules. She told us stories about them...you can tell the animals there are really cared for and loved. The front of the main house and gardens are gorgeous! There are fountains and bird baths throughout. We also enjoyed walking through the family cemetery...nicely manicured and very serene. The dog hospital, nurse's station, and log cabin schoolhouse were buildings we're not used to seeing on plantations. They were all so interesting. Overall we really enjoyed our time here. Would highly recommend!

I really did not mind at all to pay and have free range of the house but I was not allowed in unless I took the tour. This is not convenient for people that are on a time crunch or tourist that speak little to no English and don't care for a spoken tour. It has been my experience that in these old houses and plantations, there is always an attendant in the house ready to answer questions but you have free reign. Most of these houses have placards or guided tours over prerecorded phone calls. It was a big waste of time and gas because the main attraction is definitely the house.

Since it's been almost a year since the last review here, I think it's time for some updating…read more There are currently no reviews lower than three stars, so I decided to make sure to visit this location on my trip to Tallahassee. I knew I would be arriving around 4:00 and understood that they closed at 5:00 p.m., but I really just wanted to enjoy the gardens and grounds. There was an accident on the freeway and it was 4 :40 p.m. when I arrived. All the intrigates were already shut and locked. I was annoyed as they are supposed to be open until 5:00, but I understand that some people are excited to go home and want to close up and leave early. Undeterred, I got a hotel for the night and made sure to come back first thing in the morning. I could not be more confused by the reviews. It looked to me like no one had been taking care of the grounds at all. The grass was brown, and a thick layer of leaves was covering everything. When I went to park in one of the few spaces I saw, a woman in a sedan opened her car door and let her three small dogs run out off leash. I watched them dedicate while she sat in her car on the phone and I knew it was time to go. I can see now why the employees are keen to leave early.

All the early settlers such as the Spanish, English, French and Dutch had "marital" relationships with the Indigenous Americans even if they were not per say married. It was a rare occurrence for all European colonies to have an actual marriage between a European and a Native American. Regardless, there are many Americans that claim and prove to have Native American Ancestry, shown through DNA testing. Where I roll my eyes a little is that most claim to be related to Pocahontas and Geranamo. Because this is a Spanish mission, in some placards they emphasize that some Spanish men "intermarried" with the indigenous women and that the indigenous peoples found that to be a bettering of themselves. Of course, this is all speculation. In Cuban History, you learn that there was a complete genocide of the Indigenous peoples. It is well documented. Many of the indigenous preferred to throw themselves off the cliffs than to fall on the Spanish sword. Hatuey, who fought Spanish colonizers, famously said, "Then I do not want to go where they are. I would rather go to hell so as not to be where they are and where I would not see such cruel people." This is why there are no indigenous peoples in Cuba. Some of the Spanish conquistadors were even eaten by the indigenous. But this place would have you believe things were hunky dory between the Spanish and the indigenous. The Spanish were very Catholic and very strict with the social class or social caste system and would not "marry" the indigenous women they took. Even the historical actor said that the ledgers were all burnt and there isn't any historical legal evidence of their marriage unions. There is a lot of speculation about the past and not too much fact.
