Ridiculous entrance for westbound traffic. It must be three miles from the highway to the parking lot through curves and splits. Nope, I would not do this one again. Yes, it's pretty and it was needed but the rest area is on the south side of the highway, servicing both eastbound and westbound traffic. Bonkers. Rest areas are supposed to creative convenient and fast exit both of the highway. This one defies that fundamental rule. It would literally be easier to get off an exit and stop at a gas station. I would guess this is at least a mile off the main highway. It would be one thing if there was something stunning about this area, but to me it appears just like any other rest area.

The legend of the Gadsden Rest Area outside Chattahoochee, FL may be fictitious or it may be true, as for me I only stop here during daylight hours. Located in the remote piney woods in the panhandle of Florida this beautiful comfort station offers a lot of amenities including large clean restrooms, vending machines and lots of covered picnic pavilions that are scattered across this large tract of land. Many question the reason this rest area is located so far from I-10 hidden in the deep woods not far from the swamps that reside along the Chattahoochee, others dismiss the tales as myths and folklore. If you choose to pull off the road after sunset do not park below and always lock your doors when exiting your vehicle before taking the long walk past the numerous concrete structures on your way to the facilities. Please don't disturb those that reside in the darkness and enjoy your visit, welcome to the nocturnal side of Florida there's a good chance you're being watched by those that call the swamp home...

Rarely have I seen such winding, forested ramps to a rest area of all places.

We were told that there were some interesting and fun things to do in Dothan, AL, just 30 or so minutes from the Florida/Alabama border. As we made our way to Dothan, we stopped at the Alabama Welcome Center. I'm so glad that we stopped! The two women working in the reception area were both very friendly and helpful. We visited on the first Friday of June late in the morning. They gave us a few pointers on what to see in Dothan like the many murals on buildings and invited us to browse the many travel brochures available. When we asked about the peanut outside the building, the two ladies told us that there are 80+ peanut 'statues' displayed throughout Dothan. Peanuts are a big crop in the Dothan area. We had fun trying to find peanuts displayed by local businesses while as we spent the afternoon in Dothan. Our favorite was the peanut doughnut man in front of the Krispy Kreme. The restrooms were clean and properly stocked. Large maps in the foyer area made it easy to see how we could travel the roads in Alabama. I never thought I would enjoy a rest area so much but the welcome we received plus the information available made our stop productive and fun.

There are some things you should not skimp on. Brain…read moresurgery, tattoos, and a good nights sleep. From the check in guy that asked if I knew how to work the credit card... To the tailgate party happening in the parking lot next to my room... To the way my shoes sorta stuck to the carpet... I should have known this was no discount. I knew I should have run for the hills but I was tired, the kids were tired, and we have a long drive ahead of us, besides, it's just one night. How bad could it be? The room itself was rather large, easily enough space to put in two queen beds instead of the doubles that are actually here, but hey, beggars can't be choosers. Luckily with the ripped bedskirts I can see it's not really cinder blocks holding up the mattress, it must just be the mattress that feels like that. The popcorn ceiling scattered all over the room probably fell as a result of the recent earthquake, so that's alright. I've never actually seen any other hotels bolt PVC pipes to the wall to run their lamp cords, but maybe they do things differently here. The AC is easily the coldest I've felt in a long time, so I'll excuse noise levels so loud that we had to turn it down to have a conversation. The wifi is free, you know, IF you're willing to stand on the foot of one bed with your phone arm outstretched overhead. I'm about to go take a shower and try the free breakfast but gonna end my review now because I just can't bear to write anymore. Be afraid... Be very afraid...

We booked our stay here over expedia on the phone and were unaware of the negative reviews prior to booking. Once booked I thought it would be a good idea to check. Upon checking I noticed its poor rating and thought "Ehh we've stayed in 1 and 2 stars before and it wasn't even bad at all. People are probably being dramatic". Wow was I almost dead wrong. We checked into the hotel and the woman at the front desk was very friendly and checked us in. At some point she told us we had a not pet friendly room...we told her that we had a pet and that wouldn't work. She charged us $10 (not bad) and NEVER changed the room even though it was apparently "not pet friendly". We drove around back to our room and along our drive noticed lots of "not the finest looking people" hanging out in the parking lot. There was also a cop patrolling at some point and multiple people sitting in their cars with windows down and no lights on. Weird. So we go up to our room, with a huge suitcase AND NO ELEVATOR. Upon opening the door I had a really bad feeling in my stomach so I put the key in and shoved the door all the way open. It REAKED. It smelt of sweat, mold, diseases and rape. The room was pretty much the size of a closet with a tiny, dirty full bed with a pillow that still had someones head indent in it. The only thing in that room was a bed and one little side table. CREEPY. The toilet was in one tiny room and the shower in another. Lets just say we got the hell out of there as soon as our legs could get us out. If there is somewhere in town where all the drug deals, rapes, prostitution and other sketchy shit goes down....this is for sure the place. It is not comforting, welcoming, clean, hospitable or safe in ANY WAY. Also, when we went to the lobby to "check out" after 5-10 minutes of being there we said "We can't stay here" and she said "Ok, I can't refund you. You have to do that with Expedia but here is your pet deposit back". She responded with absolutely no shock or concern or confusion in her voice. It seemed as though this happened frequently. We were legitimately shaking in fear. I can almost guarantee you this is a prostitution motel and a drug spot. Please please please do not stay here. This place seriously needs to be shut down. It is terrifying. If I could do negative stars I would. I know this sounds funny but it really is more terrifying than I could ever put into words.

Today I under estimated by a lot I pre-paid $200 and ended up with only 3/4 of a tank definitely a rookie mistake and with a number of truckers waiting across this multiple lane island I definitely wasn't going to start over and hold up the line so I moved up to the staging line and went inside to grab my receipt. The staff here was very friendly at the fuel counter and it's seems they put up with private owners while they cater to the over the road guys and in all fairness I understand why since they pump between $800 - $1,500 per stop. Most truckers know the drill and if an RV owner knows the protocol you usually get a hat tip which validates you belong to to the "diesel club" and respect the fact that these freight haulers are working and time is money. This location was pretty clean and the staff was out and about filling squeegee buckets with soapy water, wiping down the equipment and emptying trash dispensers, it definitely takes a team to keep this business moving efficiently.
