Interstate 10 is a 2,460-mile route running east to west from Jacksonville, Florida, to Santa Monica, California. It is the southern-most coast-to-coast highway in the Interstate Highway System it was designed to move people and commerce efficiently. This super highway brought with it many benefits for the common traveler and greatly reduced the time it took to deliver goods and really had a positive impacted on the fresh produce distribution network, however there was a cost and it was paid by small town America, the mom and pop restaurants and hotels that were bypassed by the interstate system were considered a small price to pay in the name of progress. Some of the challenges were environmental "where are people going to pee" so they built facilities, like this one that provides water closets and ample parking to accommodate the millions who took to the road most were known as oasis then since the amenities were very limited but vital. Today the research continues with the ever changing legislation to regulate everything In the name of who knows what. The research includes an assessment of technology that can be used to improve truck parking management at rest areas in Florida which lead to the deployment of a pilot project to test implementation. The vehicle detection technology chosen for the pilot project here at the Leon County rest areas (eastbound and westbound) on I-10 features wireless ground sensors, which detect the presence of a vehicle as it comes to a stop above it. Over the course of this research, various software tools were developed to complement the wireless vehicle detection system described above, including a geographic information system (GIS) mapping application, a report generation module, and an occupancy prediction model. So while you're standing at the urinal or locked in the stall you have to ask yourself if you're really alone. With all the camera technology along our highways and these sensors and satellites it's doubtful that your trip be it pleasure or business goes unnoticed. The funny thing is, with all this technology they still can't tell me if the restrooms are clean or not...

Rest area buildings. Nice and clean.

This place creeped me out like a scene from a horror flick. I was driving on 10 West and the dogs…read moreneeded a break. Out of no where I see a sign that just says rest area. I pull off expecting the parking area to be close by like all of the others. No, it's a long winding road that makes you feel like you are going in circles and getting lost. Then you arrive at the lower level where the big rigs park. I should have read Dave O's review before I parked down there. The dogs were desperate for a walk so we jumped out of the car. Thankfully I always lock my car. Thankfully it was day light too. Once up the hill, there are plenty of restrooms and picnic tables under pavilions. The grounds are well cared for and I enjoyed talking pictures of the trees. When I was leaving, a man in a black T-shirt and jeans came up on me out of no where. He asked for gas money to get to Houston, TX. He told me that he lost his apartment and was sleeping in his car with his dog. He was headed to his aunts but needed gas. I told him that I was traveling cashless and the only thing I could offer was for him to follow me to a gas station. He didn't take me up on the offer. After that I quickly put the window back up and took off. I stopped at the upper level to throw trash out and my intuition kept saying get out of there. I stopped what I was doing and took off.

This is not a rest area for those in a big hurry. It's a two way rest stop that serves both…read moreeastbound and westbound traffic. You could use it to turn around and go back the way you came if you wanted to. Because of this, it's a bit of a drive to get to it after you exit the interstate but others exaggerate how far. This rest area is meant to be enjoyed. Go past the facilities around the loop to the highest point, park and walk up past the picnic shelter for a view down to the Apalachicola River and off into the distance. There was more to see when it was first built and the trees hadn't grown up to block the view. There was a new opportunity after Hurricane Michael came through but that is now growing back to hide the scars and some of the view. After the leaves fall is probably the best time to get the view these days. The facilities are kept clean and there is lots of parking. If you want a good walk then park down with the large truck parking area and walk up. Otherwise, go past that parking area and loop around to parking closer to the facilities. There are a bunch of sheltered picnic tables on around the loop. When you leave it is clearly marked which way to go to continue east or west. It will be a bit of a drive back to the interstate but you will be refreshed and ready to drive some more.
