Great displays of antique and archeology finds
Matt M.

Wow, I could spend all day here. This was a really neat find when we were stranded in Tallahassee during a hurricane. Looking for interesting things to do, I stumbled on this museum almost by accident and we spent several hours on the grounds speaking to the reenactment staff who can describe the 1700's culture, customs, history with resounding accuracy. To me, the most impressive structure was the counsel house. This is a reproduction, but the original would have been an engineering marvel. It seemed to be three or four stories tall with different cubicles for each family to sit. The roof is thatched and a huge opening in the center keeps it cool. They have items on display and people to explain what went on inside. Definitely a highlight. The rest of the grounds housed the Friars quarter, fort, blacksmith shop, garden and at each point there is someone there to explain what the building was and what went on during the time. The blacksmith was particularly interesting because he was making goods as we watched. I could go on and on, but if you are a history buff and enjoy reenactments, this will be quite a treat for you.

Master Blacksmith at work

Love taking visitors to this interesting and beautiful place. The enactors are great to speak with, and will impart their historic knowledge. It is fascinating to watch the Master Blacksmith at work, and he is wonderful with allowing the children to be hands on! It is a very low admission price. There is a lovely gift shop also. They have special events periodically, such as Solstices and there is free admission on the day of Blessing of the Animals.Do not miss !!!

Wonderful historical afternoon. Beautifully kept, great prices ($5 per adult, less for others and free for under 6). It was fun for my child to run around; lots of space to run and burn off energy while also learning about the history and great for parents.

The Council House

Beautiful living history museum! The council house, blacksmith shop, the friar and his church, etc. were all place and people to learn from. Characters in period costumes were delightful to talk to, so much to be learned. I look forward to returning here again!

Love the dog park here. Wish it was a little cleaner though. it can get muddy after it rains (and everyone knows it rains a lot in tally)

The Knott House Museum - Swing Dancin' in the Street 2015.

The Knott House Museum

The Knott House Museum is a cute southern home that maintains a pieces of Tallahassee History. It…read morewas built in 1843 and was owned by many people during the years after. It is known as the Knott house because the last owners were William Knott and his wife Luella. William worked as the state treasurer during the times of the great depression. This house shows a lot of the items his wife collected and the kind of lifestyle they had back in the day. The museum gives daily tours and the day I came there were free mini versions. We were shown the downstairs floor of the house. It has old furniture that was brought throughout the country and though some of it does not completely match, the house looks cool. Poems were written to pair off with each item of furniture to give a little entertainment. All of the decorations and furniture are fragile and nothing is to be touched without cloth gloves. The staff is super friendly and welcoming. The house is decorated for the holidays and so it is ever changing style while maintaining its history. If you ever seem to wander around downtown Tallahassee or want to get some easy education then stop by the Knott House.

I really enjoyed this museum and I have to start off by saying it definitely deserves five stars …read more The reason I cannot give it five stars is because it was so uncomfortably warm inside that we reached a point where we just had to get out of there. It's a shame because there is so much to see here, but we probably missed out on at least an 1/8 of the museum because we were sweating and felt so icky we just needed to get back out into the fresh air. This was in winter mind you, so saying that it was just too hot outside is no excuse. It was only around 68 degrees at the hottest point of the day we visited and we came in the morning so leaving the museum was literally a breath of fresh air. I cannot imagine how it gets in the summer. Although the temperature made us miss some of the museum, we made sure to get through all the cars before leaving. We spent around 2 hours here and could easily have stayed longer. This is not just a quick walk-through car museum. It's packed wall to wall, upstairs and downstairs, with cars, collectibles, Americana and lots of really unexpected items. I love rare and classic vehicles so seeing a tucker 48 in person was pretty cool. That alone made my day. The Oldsmobile futuramic 88 was another favorite and the limo that had been converted into a train car was just wild in the best way and blew my mind. You definitely don't see cars like this everyday. It's not just cars here though, they had a golden rococo style piano that was to die for! It was absolutely stunning. There were a bunch of gorgeous ornate antique cash registers that I really liked, interesting vintage radios, firearms, law enforcement badges, sports memorabilia and historical stuff like old medical equipment. They had a whole section of model trains and if you're into Batman they have a small section of vehicles dedicated to that. The bathroom was small but tidy and the employees were were quiet and perfunctory. It's also dog friendly, which is lovely but our dog did seem nervous walking on some of the matting on some sections of the floor so just be aware. On its face, this really is a five-star museum but the heat and humidity inside were just unexpected, and it was especially bad upstairs. We were sweating and physically uncomfortable. We really wanted to finish looking at the museum but we just couldn't take it anymore. I really hope they address the climate issue; not just for guests but for the preservation of all the items inside as well. It's was still def worth the $20 per person and I recommend a visit, just dress in layers and maybe start upstairs first.
