We were…read moregoing to pass right by Howard on our travels from Salina to Bella Vista, AR, so we planned a lunch stop. I'm glad we did. Howard is one of those Kansas towns that has seen better days. It's pretty dumpy. Toots is pretty dumpy too. It's just a squatty old building on a gravel lot with faded signs and a pretty neglected look to it. Inside there are tables to seat fifteen or so and a small counter with a cash register. Behind the cash register, the young woman didn't give much of a greeting and acted as if I should just know what I wanted. Well, I kind of did, but I still wanted to look at the menu on the wall. I ordered the pork tender sandwich and the big cheeseburger with onion rings and sweet potato fries to go--we had our dog with us and planned to eat at a picnic table around to the side. I asked if they could cut the sandwiches in half so my wife and I could share, but they didn't. Had to go back for a knife which was just and ancient table knife and had to promise to bring it back. The food was good but the flies outside were super-annoying so we didn't enjoy it as much as I hoped. Anyway, Toots was pretty much what I expected, a greasy little drive-in with classic greasy drive-in food. Pretty darn good.

This is always a good thing. They serve breakfast all day, numerous burgers, sandwiches, and various plates. We ordered the reuben and BLT sandwiches and the catfish plate with mac n cheese. The veggie of the day was green beans. Everything was good except for the mac n cheese, which didn't taste very fresh -- you can tell the pasta and cheese had become coagulated. It wasn't creamy cheesy as good quality mac n cheese should be. Wasn't even homemade. And the green beans? Straight from the can! It was mushy and bland. Who wants to eat soggy green beans?! This was rather disappointing. Service was straightforward. Free parking in their small lot but also ample street parking.

All were prepared well and satisfied our hunger. The B&G was a clear winner with plenty of sausage mixed into a savory tasting gravy that smothered fresh, fluffy biscuits to perfection. Not a lot of places get biscuits and gravy right, but Tina's certainly knows how to add some country love to this Midwest favorite. We ate Thursday evening at Smokey D's BBQ on Main St. in Chanute. Our waitress was helpful, cordial and attentive; and our food was on the table quickly. My husband and I both had the Thursday special: A burger covered with brisket, topped with cheese, then topped with either coleslaw or baked beans. Potato salad for the side. The brisket was delicious and tender, and the hamburger was very flavorful. Add a slathering of BBQ sauce, and you know this is worth a second trip to SE Kansas. I enjoyed the classic potato salad, but I do like how my husband makes it with a little Worcesterchire Sauce to kick it up a notch. We talked with the owner, Mark Davidson, and his wife. We also sampled the sweet and spicy BBQ sauce. We really need some of that when you get it in a bottle! We must come back to try other menu items. This restaurant is a jewel --- tasty food at a great price.

Not only did the woman on the phone remember me, she checked in to see how the sick family member was doing (so so thoughtful)! When I got off the phone placing the order my husband asked how I knew the woman taking my order. I told him I didn't and he said "you both sounded like old friends". In fact, we went back for breakfast the next two days. The biscuits and gravy are good as well as the egg breakfasts. The bacon and sausage Pattie's were properly cooked and tasted great. On the second breakfast trip we ordered a pancake. Well worth it as the syrup is warm and the pancake was just the right size. Coffee is good too. No complaints.
