This is the kind of place that's been frying chicken for 50+ years and absolutely knows what they're doing. And the pie... honestly spectacular. Probably the best pie I've ever had. I can't think of another place that even holds a candle to it. Boy, is this place busy! Big groups come in, sit down. We came specifically for the fried chicken. The waitress took awhile to get to us. We order the 1/2 chicken with green beans, butterfly coated breast with green beans and a side order of hand breaded onion wings. She asked if we would like rolls with that. Yes. We waited 45 minutes for our order. They were short handed, as it appeared someone quit mid rush. Our waitress began running register for a bit. When our order arrived, my husband received the wrong order. The waitress went back to reorder. She came back with the onion rings, no rolls. We ate. After our meal, the waitress appeared with the correct chicken. We got a go box with chicken and rolls. The place was still packed and all 3 dining areas were opened at this time. The chicken was basic, nothing to write home about. Someone didn't add seasoning, as the coating was bland. The breast hubby ate was overcooked. The onion rings were outstanding. From the typical shredded bag salad, cellophane packaged Club crackers, to the iced tea served with the squeezable plastic lemon juice bottle, everything about this landmark small town diner says "country style". We enjoyed their famous fried chicken but were a little disappointed in the grade/size of most of the pieces other than breast portions. The Chicken House of Olpe is a family staple. I grew up frequenting the restaurant when visiting nearby family. Now that I live in Oregon, I still make the effort to get at least one meal from the Chicken House when I'm in the area. Over the past 30ish years (probably more, but I am 30ish), the food has been consistently tasty - traditional American country food. Any issue is fixed right away as the service is always spot-on and friendly. The atmosphere is Kansas homey. There is a strong sense of community to the restaurant too. My favorite? The chicken fried steak and the glorious cheese balls. The onion rings are a family favorite. Of course, you gotta try the fried chicken. Really, there are no losers on the menu. It's worth the drive....end statement. Finger licking must have Fried Chicken. We checked out this spot which is about 12 miles south of Emporia. Local owned and local service - which is a great thing. The Staff was nice and welcoming. We had the 2 piece white (wing and breast) and 3 piece (breast, wing, thigh) dinners. Key point dinner...and all under $10. The dinner comes with side salad, potato of choice (baked, fries, mash or green beans) drink, and dinner rolls. Be prepared to wait - this goodness isn't a quick flash fry. Super tender super juicy which will leave you full and actually wanting more. The place is decorated with some pretty cool artifacts! It made US Today as the best fried chicken spot in Kansas.....so why not give it a whirl. read more

Finally came here after 30 years of coming to Emporia, first for college and then for visits and now my daughter in college. OMG the food is soooo good. Our family had chicken fried steak, chicken giblets, chicken tenders and steak sandwich. Plus the onion rings which are to die for. I did ask about pie but it's not homemade so skipped it. The 1 star deduction is because while it appeared clean it definitely needs an update. The wallpaper is peeling, doors are very scuffed. Obviously right now is not the time for that but hopefully they'll survive this covid time and be able to invest in the update a bit. read more

Went to this place today and wanted to try it for many years. Got the fried chicken and it was great. The chicken is definitely fresh and piping hot when they serve it to you. I like the crispiness of the skin and it was also very juicy. What could have really put it over the top for me is a simple touch of salt & pepper. That doesn't qualify for taking a star away for me though. Our waitress was very nice (you'd have to be in this small of a town). I also got the onion rings and they were good. I was reading the story about this place and it's been in business since around 1930's so they must be doing something good and God bless them for being there for that town. Sadly, places like these are dying to corporate robots and it's nice to still be able to come to a small town where people say hello, even to strangers and give you a friendly smile. Thank you. I grew up in Olpe and we went to the Chicken House many Saturday nights to eat. I personally love their chicken. My husband loves their Rib Eye steaks. I like their salads because they are not in giant chunks that you can hardly get into your mouth. My brother has moved up towards Kansas City, and still he and his family still drive down quite often...just to eat at the Chicken House. The Chicken Fried Steak, Shrimp, Ham Steak, cheese balls, zucchini spears, fried okra and onion rings are all family favorites. We have relatives who always ask to go to the Chicken House when visiting. We offer all of the other eating establishments in Emporia, but they all choose the Chicken House and say it is one of the things they look forward to most when visiting. KFC is okay, but when giving a choice between the two, I would definitely choose the Chicken House. Friendly Family Dining... nothing fancy... nothing spectacular... just yummy delicious home-cooked flavor at reasonable prices without the mess and time to fix it myself. I give them 5 stars for a small town family friendly restaurant. We would sure miss them if they weren't here! read more
