I recently visited Jack Rose for a birthday dinner and was blown away by how large the whiskey selection was. FOOD (5/5): I ordered one of the signature cocktails Adonia and a Bison Burger. Adonia was a very good cocktail. The Ardbeg 10yr and baked apple bitters in the drink added some smokiness and fruitiness to the drink and with how it tasted of a hint of cinnamon, I'd say this drink is perfect for the fall and for anyone who'd appreciate a sweet whiskey cocktail. As for the Bison Burger, it was also very good. It packed a bit of a kick from the pickled fresno chiles and was served with a lot of fries. Overall, it was a solid burger. SERVICE (5/5): The waiter was extremely knowledgeable and was able to offer recommendations when asked questions about certain selections of alcohol. The wait staff was very quick to take away finished plates and fill up our glasses of water. AMBIANCE (5/5): Walking into Jack Rose is like walking into a dimly-lit library without the books. Much of the walls near floor to ceiling are lined up with all sorts of whiskey. There was sliding ladder situated behind the bar adding to the aesthetic of the restaurant. read more

The ambiance at Jack Rose Dining Saloon is that of an old world library. Only instead of shelves of leather bound books, it's bottles and bottles of Whiskey. I had a bourbon-loving friend visit. I found Jack Rose via Google, where it boasts over 2600 different whiskeys. Little did I know that I had found "the Disneyland for bourbon drinkers." Not only did my friend and I have a great time but the staff was knowledgeable and helpful and I learned a ton. My companion the bourbon aficionado asked them to curate a flight of Willet bourbons for him. He was blown away by the flight. He said it was an experience and really liked a bottle he said he would likely never see again. He pointed out the Pappy and the Willet. Our waiter also made me a beginner flight. I now know I am an Irish whiskey person and bourbon is too much for me. I also know scotch whiskey is aged in sherry barrels which gives it the fruity notes. I should add the food was delicious. The interior of this place is so stunning, it has floor to ceiling built in shelves that are full of whiskey options (on a side note it is so cool to watch the employees use the ladder to climb up and grab a bottle). The whiskey menu is over 50 pages long, if you are overwhelmed with the sheer amount of options (as I was) the servers are amazing at recommending a good one for you to try. I was recommended the Angels Envy, which turned out to be a great whiskey to start with as someone who is not as familiar with it. In addition to the great drinks they have really good classic bar food as well. We ordered the calamari and buffalo wings to start both of which were tasty. For our mains we all ordered the big jack burger. It came with bacon, fried shallots, pimento cheese on a sesame seed bun and fries on the side. This might be my favorite burger in DC! read more

Instead of books, you're surrounded by whisky from all around the world and with all sorts of quality from the low to high end options. The whisky tastings are phenomenal. You can choose curated options. Each whisky is provided with the bottle so you can get a look at the product and you get an in depth explanation from the staff about each whisky you choose. If you are a whiskey lover, this is by far the best whiskey bar in DC. They have an absolutely amazing selection of whiskeys and for reasonable prices (relative to the cost of the bottles). My husband and I love scotch and Jack Rose has one of the best collections I've ever seen, second only to what the Islay distilleries had when we visited. We have been on a Campbeltown kick recently, which is extremely difficult to find in DC, and they had a good selection from both Springbank and Glen Scotia. AND it wasn't super marked up, as one would expect given how scarce these bottles are. When you order a dram, they bring you the bottle, pour a dram, and then leave the bottle on the table so you can read the labels. We didn't get the food, although I did a few years ago and from what I can remember, it was just average. They also have a rooftop that is really nice when the weather is nice, but the whiskey menu there is much more limited. read more

Went out for a date night with the girlfriend and decided on Jack Rose, cause who doesn't love whiskey? Started the night with a couple of the specialty hot cocktails, along with the Shishito peppers and chicken skins, which were all great. Now, this review would be five stars, but the original bartender never came back to check on us. Another bartender (Patrick) ended up taking over and taking great care of us. From him we ordered the whiskey flight shown below along with the lamb bolognese which was also very well prepared. From there it's all whiskey tales. Hope to visit again soon read more

This is the premier whiskey bar with the largest whiskey collection in the Western Hemisphere, Ajax rose boasts more than 2,700 different bottles from around the world. We had the opportunity to try out some firsts and grab a bottle in the saloon with bardstown bourbonon the saloon floor. We then headed up to the terrace to try out some wonderful Cocktails and Whiskeys prior to the kentuckyderby. So, when your in DC next time and you are whiskey or cocktail connoisseur make sure to get a stop @jackroseindc We tried the biscuits with honey butter and wow they were a nice touch to our tasting. Wide selection of whiskey from floor to ceiling! There are hundreds or even thousands bottles, we've never seen some of the bottles online or in any store. Great selection! I've been coming for the past 5 years even in the Dram and Grain era! My whiskey connoisseur hubby loves to try new types of whiskeys. He enjoyed the staff's pick for The Classic Cask 17 year aged bourbon. The cocktails pack a punch! The Allice in Chains whiskey cocktail is very smoky from the Ardbeg Wee Beastie. The blended whisky added to the potency while the sweetness of the honey, lemon, and ginger couldn't mask the bitterness. Definitely not for the faint of heart! After 1 sip, I handed it it over to my hubby while the Goldrush with Bourbon, honey, and lemon was more my style and cup of tea. Note there's a small $2 food and beverage minimum now at bars in DC. Glad we ventured beyond the default fries and paid a bit extra for the fried mac and cheese balls with garlic aioli. The fried Mac & Cheese balls are divine - just as good as I remember them 4 years ago! The garlic aioli is the perfect dipping sauce and elevates the flavor. Even though we had a hearty dinner without any room to spare, I delightfully chowed down 2 mac and cheese balls and so tempted to take home the rest! The restaurant is Covid compliant with tables 6 feet apart and paperless menus that can be easily accessed by a QR code on your phone. I don't know what the bad reviews on here are talking about, unless they are talking about the food, which I didn't eat, so I can't comment. Also, it would help if I read the bad reviews so I knew what they said before opening my mouth. Anyway, I liked it here. Stopped in because I wanted a whiskey flight and it was in the neighborhood of where we were planning on having dinner. It was hot, and we had been walking around all day, and who doesn't love whiskey on a hot day? We stepped in and checked out their saloon and bottle shop first. There wasn't a soul in the saloon, making me think maybe it was closed. However, the selection in the saloon is impressive. Bar to ceiling walls stocked with hundreds of bottles. Wouldn't even know where to begin. Their bottle shop is small but has a bunch of labels I had never seen elsewhere. Decided to head up to the terrace for a drink, and the terrace is great...on a cool day. This is my first and only complaint - it may not normally get as hot as it did that day where the heat index was around 109 - but it does get hot in DC in the summer, and the only fans were at the far end of the room. Nothing over the bar or anything cooling the place down other then the shade of the terrace overhang. Everyone was sweating themselves dead. Some more fans scattered around the place would have helped immensely, and some misting. So, 1 star down because it was uncomfortable AF. However, our bartender whose name I wish I could remember, and their whiskey expert were fantastic (what do you call a whiskey expert? A whiskey sommelier?). They were friendly and knowledgeable and very interesting to talk to. I went with their Jack Rose whiskey flight - the Hughes Belle of Bedford 114 proof rye, a Revival madeira barrel bourbon and a New Riff single barrel bourbon. Normally not a rye fan, and this one was absolutely a kick in the throat, but I actually enjoyed it (once my throat stopped burning). However, my favorite was the New Riff. Never heard of it before but it was smooth and pleasant. The did sell bottles in their bottle shop, but I decided I really needed to work on the bourbons I had at home first. Finished off our visit with a dram of District Made single barrel bourbon. I wanted something local and the whiskey somm suggested this one, though he did warn me it was basically just the best one out of a lot of mediocre local whiskeys. He normally wouldn't recommend anything local, but said this was the lone bright spot. Unfortunately, I would dispute whether or not it was a bright spot. I didn't care for it, but I blame myself. He warned me there really weren't any good local distilleries, but I like trying local things so I pushed the issue. Anyway, if you're a whiskey lover then this Jack Rose should definitely be on your list. read more

A great spot for burgers and a night of whiskey tasting. A terrible spot for everything else. I made the mistake of ordering the New York strip steak. It did not come with a side, so I ordered the creamed spinach. It came out to nearly $70 for just the two items, and it was terrible. The steak was full of gristle - an absurd amount of cartilage because they had not properly trimmed it and I'm pretty sure it was not actually a New York cut. It was also extremely bland and served cold. One of the worst steaks I've ever been served. I would not pay $15 for that steak. And the appetizer we had - the fried chicken skins - was not enjoyable at all. My wife had the burger, which was actually very good. That with the whiskey flight would be a fun way to order food here. But if they can't get a steak right, I would not trust them with any of their far more complicated dishes. And you can get a much better burger across the street, at Lucky Buns, and much better everything else next door at The Imperial. Unless you're coming for the whiskey, I do not recommend this restaurant. read more

While hanging out in Adams Morgan on a Saturday night, a group of us stopped in here... Many of them had been before, it was my first time. The place was packed, but we were able to find a spot to stand and grab some drinks. Drinks were decently made, bartender was helpful, but the rest of the staff wasn't too helpful, rather more rushed due to the amount of patrons. They have a nice cocktail list and offer a huge selection of whiskey. Prices are fair, for DC that is. The biggest issue were the other patrons, very rude and like to bump people, while is crazy for being such scrawny little geeky people, but I guess being in larger groups empowers them to act this way. Be prepared to have to deal with that if you go on a busy weekend evening. read more

Absolute perfect atmosphere for the end of our date night! We had attended a show at the DAR Constitution Hall and we're out by about 8:30 PM. This was only a short drive north and then the direction of home, so it was a perfect stop! We were visiting on a Sunday evening, so the downstairs inside was closed. But the upstairs balcony was open. We definitely want to enjoy this nice weather while we've got it! There were only two small tables on this outside balcony so it felt very cozy! I eat in a huge meal and wasn't hungry and just came to enjoy the conversation in the club soda. But my husband had come straight from work and was ready to eat. So he enjoyed their bacon and pimento cheese burger along with a flight of bourbon. He said the burger was one of the very best he's had lately. It also came with an extremely generous portion of fries. When he ordered his flight, the waiter asked about what Price range she wanted to stay in, my husband went for about $45. But apparently $35 is about the norm although they can create some thing for less if you prefer. The waiter checked in with the types of bourbon flavors he likes and created a flight for him. When he returned, he talked to us for about 10 minutes solid about each bottle and where it comes from. This guy went above and beyond and was awesome! My husband learned that he definitely prefers the sweeter Bourbons. I don't think the heavy wood flavors made in Japan work quite his style. LOL. But he had such a great time learning more and we were happy to have a relaxing evening! read more

Drinks and cocktails are amazing! That goes without saying. I recommend the Smoky Treasures: Laphroaig Single Casks flight. I love peated Scotch though. Ambiance? You've never been to a place like this! It was described to us as a "Whiskey Library" & that was apt. The walls are lined floor to vaulted ceilings with thousands of whiskies of all kinds! Service is quick & efficient with the servers having near-encyclopedic knowledge of the whiskies. The food, well... we loved the appetizers. We got the deviled eggs, chopped salad & Fried Rhode Island Calamari to share between 4 of us. None of those disappointed at all. The entrees however, my wife got the Big Jack Burger. She's not a rare meat person so she orders medium-well. It was too pink for her liking. I, on the other hand, like mine medium rare. I ordered the 16oz New York Strip. It was a tad over-cooked & it was not a great cut of steak. It was a bit tough & gristly & could used some aging to gain some tenderness. In summation, go for the whiskies! Munch on the appetizers! And it's your choice if you wanna do the entrees. As our friends said, people don't say, "I want to go to Jack Rose for dinner." It's always, "We should get drinks at Jack Rose." It had been almost ten years since my last visit to Jack Rose, so I marveled at their whiskey selection coming in from Utah. We managed to land an early reservation in the balcony room. We were greeted quickly by our server, Jeremy, who was attentive and a wealth of knowledge. I started with a around the world flight and my wife got the Scotch, Coffee and a Cigar (which she didn't share a sip, rude). We then ordered the fried Brussels sprouts and the chopped salad, which was very well dressed but not heavy, full of vegetables and had a wonderful half of a deviled egg on it. For dinner I got a 12oz bison ribeye which blew my mind, and my wife got the grilled scallops and a side of squash. The scallops and fried garlic were incredible, the polenta was good but the scallops stole the show. The squash side came out weighing what seemed like two pounds and I just kept eating it. It was perfectly salted, had ample garlic and butter. I managed to land the last pour of Octomore 12.3 and my wife ended with the single barrel Manhattan and it stole the cocktail show. It's expensive for a Manhattan but totally worth it. Don't skimp on your evening. Get the stuff you wouldn't normally and love your time at this landmark. read more

We also got their macaroni balls which were very delicious. The staff here know their stuff and were very helpful. Be prepared to spend a bit of money. Place has a massive selection of different whiskeys and even breaks down some whiskeys based on date of bottling. Intimate downstairs area with only 1 bartender. Cocktails they were able to make downstairs, but whiskey and beer was brought from upstairs. A few times when we ordered certain items, they didn't have that option but they would just bring another option. Service in the speakeasy was on the slower side, but definitely still with a visit! we came here for NYE - they had a full day planned for events, all with no cover which is rare and nice. started with a late reservation in the dining saloon. this was my first time being here and the interior was warm and dark - perfect vibe for a whiskey bar (think: if a mahogany or tobacco candle was a space). they gave us complementary champagne for the holiday. fun start to the evening. we then ordered several drinks: - pineapple milk punch - light, easy drinking, sweet but refreshing - golden age - didn't taste this one. came with a few pieces of popcorn to complete the taste. my friend liked it enough to order 2. - scotch, coffee & a cigar - boozy, served in a coup glass. obviously for people who appreciate scotch. not sure if i'm one of them (which i recognize that this is a whiskey bar so that's a personal issue) - espresso martini with bourbon - nice espresso start with a wave of warmth after. i've never had bourbon as the liquor in an espresso martini but it was a nice take imo. for food: - apricot jalapeño wings - big jack overall, the only thing i really disliked was the wings. i couldn't taste the apricot at all. i was under the impression it would be an apricot glaze, but the wings had zero sauce. additionally, the jalapeños were sliced and just thrown on top. i thought that was weird to not include it in seasoning / sauce (?) With DC restrictions loosening up, I finally got to grab a pour in the infamous Jack Rose Saloon and bar! I had been here a number of times before, but have only eaten and drank in the upstairs bar and patio area. I've also frequented their bottle shop during the pandemic. For those that don't know, Jack Rose has a massive collection of whiskeys that they proudly display throughout the saloon/bar area. They claim to have the biggest collection in the Western hemisphere, and I do not doubt it! As far as the drinks go, if you ask for it, they probably have it. The whiskey menu is extensive, and doesn't even hold everything they have. The prices are fair with the market, as nothing seemed absurdly over priced. The bartenders are nice and helpful with any questions you may have. They'll even do a surprise flight for you if you're up for it. The food is good, too! While drinking, I would suggest the Buttermilk Biscuits & Honey Butter with cured ham & pimento cheese. It's a great lite bite to go with whatever you're drinking. If you're feeling hungry for an actual meal, the wings are a good option, as well as the burger. I've pretty much never had a negative experience here food wise!
