Not only is this place have great customer service and located in a great location, you can skate for only $5!!!! And if you have your own skates, it's absolutely FREE!!! They also have a little sporting goods store inside, so don't feel the need to have your skates sharpened before you go. If you're hungry, they even have a little concession stand with all types of food and snacks. And don't worry, it's all really affordable, so don't be afraid, they won't gouge you! During my first visit this season, I noticed that the ladies room had been moved to the corner, and enlarged with a separate changing room space that isn't padded to protect any ice skates on your feet. I also noticed that they didn't zamboni the ice that public skate time. One of my favorite things to see there is young children learning to skate by pushing milk carts around for balance. Every time I skate at the Kelly rink people are friendly, fun and full of life. The Mo-town and bubble gum soul music pumped through speakers is a bonus. The rental skates are pretty uncomfortable - but when have you ever rented comfortable ice skates? For comfort, as always, you have to invest in a pair of your own. And I'd like to make a correction to some earlier postings: first of all, there are no "horrid" neighborhoods in Jamaica Plain. The poor and blue collar half of JP that hasn't been driven out by gentrification (i.e. the part where I live) is in many ways the heartbeat of the community and deserves to be cherished by all - visitors and newcomers especially. For those who only feel comfortable on tree lined streets with three car garages I would be glad to recommend several wealthy towns in metro-west for you to visit. A "sh#*-show of humanity"? You're talking about a free community ice skating rink, full of children in a poorer part of town. Show the same respect you would expect at your hometown "Galleria" rink. Happy skating!

The roof leaks so bad that rink 2 had a cone on the ice, the glass drips moisture to the point you cannot see the ice. How USA hockey allows this rink to host games is beyond me. With so much moisture in the air it has to full of bacteria and mold. This isn't a hockey rink it's a giant Petri dish. Does Saugus have a building inspector or health department? They need to visit this place.

I spend over two hours of my day there, every week and this rink is pretty good overall. Let's start with the facilities: my only complaint is that the locker rooms aren't all that warm and a bit small but they are clean and don't smell which is a big plus and unlike a lot of other rinks I've been to. The ice itself is pretty well maintained and doesn't suffer from too many bad spots. There's no bumps or softer spots either. The lighting is good and even and the boards are stiff and netted all around which keeps the pucks inside. The overall temperature inside is much lower than in most rinks making for a more solid sheet of ice. However it will also cause spectators to freeze to death... A tradeoff that I actually think is awesome because I'd rather skate on better ice than see my buddies watch me skate from the stands... All in all the place is pretty good, with easy parking, a clean, solid sheet of ice and decent facilities. What more could one really need? A vending machine maybe? They have three.

First let me start with some of the awesome things about this place, mainly the quality of the ice. The ice there is absolutely awesome! Except for a few inches where the zamboni comes in and out for the resurfacing, the rest of the ice is absolutely spotless and extremely well maintained. It is also very well lit and the benches are long and clean. But then comes the few negatives. The locker rooms weren't part of the renovation and are tiny and aren't well heated either. There's also a few issues in the bench area where the boards are too high, making it a bit difficult to hop over them. Oh and the doors from the benches to the ice don't close easily for some reason. But that aside this place is mint and parking is plentiful. All in all this is one of the best rinks in the Boston area that I've had the pleasure to play at. I look forward to playing here every week and the pros completely outshine the cons.
