During my first visit this season, I noticed that the ladies room had been moved to the corner, and enlarged with a separate changing room space that isn't padded to protect any ice skates on your feet. The only pro of this establishment is that there is free-of-charge public skating. The rentals are also decently cheap, $7 for figure skates & $8 for hockey skates I believe. Aside from that, there really isn't anything special. The second I got onto the ice, I was bombarded by about 25 little kids who consistently kept falling right in front of my skates. Keep in mind, this wasn't as hazardous as it could've been because I was only able to go about 2 mph on my skates as each square-foot was covered by an ice skater. I felt like I was playing dodgeball. By no means was this the fault of the kids, because everyone learns to skate at some point and it was actually quite cute seeing them learn. However, the public skating hours are very limited (2 hours per weekend day) + (the fact that it's free). Everybody is gonna sprint there! This isn't ideal, practice, or physically safe. There was absolutely no room to skate freely. Also, the rental hockey skates I got were very weird, the blade was not centered correctly and it seemed like it needed some sharpening. read more

We love this Ice Rink! It's located right by the Reservoir next to the C and D lines and offers that great "throw back" feel of ice rinks I used to go to as a kid. Not only is this place have great customer service and located in a great location, you can skate for only $5!!!! And if you have your own skates, it's absolutely FREE!!! They also have a little sporting goods store inside, so don't feel the need to have your skates sharpened before you go. If you're hungry, they even have a little concession stand with all types of food and snacks. And don't worry, it's all really affordable, so don't be afraid, they won't gouge you! An indoor rink in Brighton - close to the B, C, and D lines. The best part is it is free! Sure, it is crowded with kids who barely know how to skate and have helmets on and kids who do know how to skate and whiz pass you like crazy. Its kinda like frogger whereas you have to navigate around the rink and and avoid all the hazards. There are "guards," but they really didn't do anything. Like that girl skating in the wrong direction the entire time? Nope didn't say anything. Helping the fallen get up? Nah, we are just going to stand in the middle and do nothing like the cool high school kids we are. Anyhow, back to the good stuff, they have skate rentals and a concession stand. They also do skate sharpening during public skates. Figure skates are $7.00 and hockey skates are $8.00 I think. The rink is open from Thanksgiving to the end of March. This is the rink that is currently used by Boston Social Sports for the broomball league and thus I have gone there and will keep going there to play this wonderful sport. I've actually also skated there once before, a few years back and remember that the ice was in very good condition. The place is very well maintained and there's plenty of room for you to spread out and put your stuff down, change and get ready. It is extremely close to the green line, just a hundred yards, if that and finding street parking isn't too bad most of the time. The only inconsistency I've found in the place is that sometimes it's nice and there and some other times it's absolutely freezing which makes it hard to plan on what to wear while there. As far as the boards go, they are in great shape and aren't all worn down from the checking and puck marks. The soundtrack they play is from circa 1990. But hey, what do you want for free? There are a lot of kids but they're pretty skilled. Not many cheesy dates. The boards have the hockey glass so you can't really hang on to the side. So if you've never skated before you might want to go down to the Frog Pond for your first try. read more

Great rink! It's a terrible, terrible shame, though, that DCR doesn't make it available to the public. Of the 70 hours a week children and adults might enjoy using it it's now available only for 4. (I'm not counting hours when no one is going to be able to use this, from noon to 2 p.m. several weekdays.) The rest of the time it's used for other things. Up till this year it also was available for 2 hours on Friday nights and it was crowded with children, adults, families because the public skating hours were so limited. But now they've taken even that away. To put it mildly, the DCR is not interested in serving the needs of the community. read more
