Not for kids learning how to skate! My seven year old son started ice skating last winter. We went to an outdoor rink at the Market Place in Lynnfield and it was great. They had those plastic skate assists and the sides of the rink had plenty of room for kids to hold on while learning. My son was skating on his own in about an hour. I didn't expect that the Daly Rink would have those assists but I could not believe how narrow the sides of the rink were. My son had to try to hold on with his the tips of his fingers. He kept on slipping and falling down. He was not able to skate at all. It was so demoralizing. In addition, the 20-something guy working the skate rental window was absolutely miserable. He clearly did not want to be there and resented having to look up from his phone to help us. Surly and rude. We had a terrible time. Otherwise, the rink is fine, nothing special, similar to rinks we all grew up with. read more

My family came here a couple of times this winter. It's clean and not too crowded during public skating. There are seating around the rink if you just want to watch. Parking lot is on a smaller side. We haven't had any issues, but there were times, there was only one spot left when we went. Be sure to have cash with you. They don't take credit cards. read more

A basic no frills public ice skating rink that is perferrable to the Frog Pond rink because it somehow seems bigger (maybe because it is less touristy?) and is semi-enclosed in a white bubble, allowing for skating even when it snows. Cheap entrance fee ($4), cheap rental ($3), and cheap coffee/soda/hot chocolate ($1) but a car is required. Radio pop blasting over the speakers. Avoid during peak hours during the weekend since there are just too many wee ones and they rarely Zamboni it (when do they it's a real quickie). read more

Had a great time last Saturday afternoon. Got there about 10 minutes early to be sure I got parking and able to get right on the ice. It got pretty crowded after about 20 minutes on the ice. After an hour on the ice it was cleared and they had the zamboni clean it up. I noticed a lot of people cleared out so the last hour of skating was a little less crowded. No public lockers so be ready for that. People keep their shoes under the benches or on the provided shelving. It's great that this rink is literally 2 minutes away from my house. Kids and people learning to skate tend to keep to the middle of the rink so you can avoid them pretty well. Regarding the previous poster's review, I can attest to the ice being cleaned every hour. They must have just been understaffed that day as they told the poster and couldn't get to cleaning the ice. Someone probably called into work, shit happens. It's a public rink run by the Department of Conservation and Recreation. read more

Came there with 3 kids and 2 adults. Spent 2 hours skating. The equipment is good, the price is not too high and ice is well maintained. Two things are challenging: 1) They need to take some form of credit/Debit card, cash only is a challenge. 2) They need to have some sort of rail for the kids as they don't allow the milk crates to push... As public rinks go, this one is pretty good. These facilities aren't frilly -- you get cheap entrance, cheap rental, and several hours for fun. Most of the places I went to (Massachusetts-run rinks) were quite a bit like big warehouses, complete with stinky feet stench. You don't have this problem with the Daly rink as it's semi-enclosed -- there's a roof over your head, but the walls are open. When I went, it was snowing outside, which means little flakes of snow wafted in as we skated on the ice, which was really lovely. The skates are on par with rentals at most state facilities, which is to say they're passable, just fine for casual ice skaters. PS: They play Mix 98.5 on the speakers. Recently went on New Years Day for the public skating. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. The rink is now enclosed and no longer open to the air. They have added locker rooms therefore the teams are no longer getting dressed in the lobby. The entrance fee was very inexpensive at $5 for the adults and $3 for the kids. Skate rentals were $5 each. The staff was very friendly and they cleaned the ice every hour. I've been looking for a good rink in the area and this will now be my go to place. read more

Daly Memorial Rink - Skating Rinks Near Me - Newton, Massachusetts

I recently went to the Daly rink for the first time and I'm wondering why it took me so long to get over there. Like others have said, it is semi-covered so if it is cold outside it will be cold on the ice. One of my friends rented skates for $5 (price as of Feb. 2009) and she was pretty surprised at the quality. They looked pretty new to me. Admission for a 2 hour Saturday night skate was also $5. There were a bunch of kids there but frankly, I thought it would be more crowded. Halfway through the skate session they brought on the Zamboni and then we were allowed back on the ice. I am definitely going to try to get over there at least a couple of more times before they melt the ice. read more

I've been really disappointed with this rink lately. It used to be great, but I went a couple of times this year and they NEVER clean the ice. What's up with that? Not only it's difficult to skate but it's simply dangerous. I talked to them and they said they usually clean the ice every hour but didn't have time that day as they were short-staffed. The people there were nice and friendly and I believe that this maybe the case. What I don't get is that why they are short-staffed on a Sunday when they are open for only 3 hours and they know it's always super busy?! This is not the first Sunday this is happening. If you are planning to go there on Sunday, I strongly advise you to show up right at 3 when the ice is clean because it's just not worth $5 to go at 4 and after. I almost tripped on their horrible scratched ice. Will be going to the Skating Club of Boston next time, yes, it's $8 vs. $5 but that place is totally worth extra $3. read more

Daly use to be managed by the DCR, the state recreation agency. Two years ago it was taken over by the Newton Country Day School and since then everything has improved. The ice is much better, the rental skates are new and everything is run better. And it's one of the few rinks that has a lot of public skating. .. and that's getting harder to find. read more
