I needed a basic handrail extended to support my aging mother-in-law. I hired this company that came out, took pictures, and gave me a sort of quote. They only work by the hour. When the technician arrived, he was totally unprepared. No materials or even basic knowledge of the project. He then had to go out and get supplies - while on the clock. I told him to make sure to secure the railing to studs, but he didn't and used butterfly anchors instead. He admitted that this was his first handrail project and that his primary skill is painting. He was very nice, and we had a good chat and were done in a couple of hours (not including the trip to Home Depot). When the invoice arrived, it was for eight hours of work plus all the supplies. After arguing with the company, we agreed to 5 hours. Do not plan on using this company again. Do not recommend it to anyone. read more

The estimate he game me for installing a screen door was 3 hrs. of labor at $230/ hr. which did not include the door. He did not guarentee a good fit. This is an UPDATED review, after we had the original work (mostly) fixed under warranty. We paid nearly $5000 for the project (almost entirely time; very little materials...), had to get warranty work done almost immediately, and are still not fully satisfied but also just done dealing with this. Also invoice wasn't adequately itemized. LOOK ELSEWHERE for interior work. The exterior work was fine, I will say. I went into this with high hopes of doing business with a reputable and professional company but came out extremely dissatisfied. We had a group of exterior and interior cosmetic repairs done, the majority of which was repairing and refinishing drywall in our finished basement following electrical work. The estimators who first visited were thorough, listened to my emphatic concerns about quality of the work, use of subcontractors, etc., given bad experiences we've had with other companies, and assured me that JW prided themselves on high quality work. I agreed to the (IMO) high estimate (~$4,000 - 6,000) because of these assurances and the fact the work is warrantied. The "technicians" that first showed up barely spoke English and thus couldn't communicate with us on quality expectations nor the plan for the work over multiple days. These guys did a decent job on the exterior repairs, but did VERY shoddy work on the drywall inside, which is what took most of their time. Absolute garbage work even a first-timer could have done better--see the photos of what they tried to pass off as finished... Excessive and unsanded compound... Tool marks on walls... Wavy interior angles... Absolute botched paint job... and more. I'm aware that you're not going to get a patched wall glass-smooth again, but this was an absolute joke. And for close to $5,000, it had better be near PERFECT. For the warranty, JW did send an actually qualified, trained, and competent technician out, and he was able to fix about 90% of the awful job the original guys did. But still not all of it due to JW not scheduling enough hours for him. So we're now left with one wall in particular (first photo), that has a critical lighting situation that we have to look at every day, being basically unsalvageable due to bubbling and marks from the original work; we're going to have to hang completely new drywall sheets at this point to get it looking halfway normal. Be warned too, the final invoice we received was not itemized as it should be for T&M work like this either, so we have no idea what we've paid close to $5,000 for, and JW doesn't seem interested in telling us. **Exceptional Service from JW Home Improvement - A Review Worth Writing** Let me start by saying I hate writing reviews, but after the service I just received, I felt absolutely compelled to share my experience. A few days ago, that dreaded moment happened. Our garbage disposal finally gave out. With four daughters, a wife, plenty of spoons, and after years of loyal service, it had officially met its match. I had tried finding quality and trustworthy people and did what anyone would do--asked family and friends. That's when I remembered JW Home Improvement doing my parents' deck. They had nothing but great things to say about the experience, so I gave JW a call. After reaching out to multiple companies, many told me it was too small of a job. After a few frustrating calls with unreliable handymen, I called JW Home Improvement and spoke with James Hinton, who promptly scheduled Jesse and Josh to come assess the situation. Thank God I did. Jesse Wertjes and Josh Metz came out, assessed the situation, and gave me three different options at varying price points. That level of transparency and choice immediately built my trust. With a full family in the house, I opted for the Cadillac of disposals, one that can apparently grind chicken bones, which feels like a necessary feature at this point. From there, Angela Redd, the project coordinator, called to schedule the installation. When our appointment day arrived, so did a snowstorm. Impressively, Angela let me know the tech was still willing to make the call. I chose to reschedule because I didn't want anyone driving in those conditions, but the dedication spoke volumes. On the rescheduled day, Weldon Harris, the office manager, personally called me in the morning to update me that the technician, Fernando, was running a little behind due to another job taking longer. I didn't mind at all because the communication was spot on, which to me is one of the most important aspects of good service. When Fernando arrived, he introduced himself and immediately got to work. Everything was smooth until we realized the manufacturer had provided the wrong power cord. Instead of cutting corners, Fernando ran out to Home Depot to get a heavier-duty replacement. That kind of attention to detail blew me away. And the service didn't stop there. Janice Chuck in billing made the payment process seamless, taking care of everything right away. Later, Luis Molina even followed up to ensure the entire process had gone smoothly and asked if I'd be willing to leave a review. Absolutely. This was my first time using JW Home Improvement, but it definitely won't be my last. I'm already scheduling an estimate with them for a bathroom remodel and kitchen cabinet revamp. If this is how well they handle a garbage disposal install, I can only imagine how smooth my remodels will go. The repair was very good and took one hour. The reason for the low rating is their billing process. They estimate the cost of the repair 3-6 hours and then bill you in advance. Further they bill a minimum of $612 (4 hours @ $153 per hour). I'm short $612 for one hour of actual work. They will not adjust because of this policy. First and last time I use them. read more

I requested an estimate for multiple small projects with a couple of mid-sized projects. After being charged $50 for the estimate, I asked to have the estimate broken down for a cost/time for each project so I could choose based on that. They REFUSED. Said it is not in their policy, simply to give a broad review and price. I told them I couldn't proceed without this and it's the last I heard from them. We bought our townhouse knowing it was going to need a few projects done in the short term. One of those was the creaky, squeaky staircase connecting the main level to the upper floor. Several of the steps were obviously insecure, bouncing and flexing whenever we stepped on them. However, carpet covered the stairs so we could not see the full extent of the problem or the cause. We contacted three home improvement companies for estimates. Josh from JW was the only one who seemed to have some idea of what was happening and what it would take to fix it. One of the other companies sent an estimator who shuffled around and took some perfunctory measurements, very clearly uninterested. The third company provided an estimate after looking at a photo on the phone, and that estimate was to rip out the carpet and see what the problem was--actually fixing it would be more. On our starting day, Alejandro and Pedro examined the stairs closely, taking off some of the drywall underneath to see if the stringers needed bracing, and taking the carpet off to examine the topside. It became clear that the stairs were in truly bad condition, with warped treads, risers that were not connected to treads anymore (if ever) and the wood used for the treads was too thin. Over the course of that first morning, our project plan evolved into a tear-out and rebuild of the entire staircase. One of them went to get materials and the other began the preparations. For the next four days our house was full of sawing and pounding and sanding, and when they finished on the afternoon of the fourth day we had a beautiful, solid and secure staircase, for a final cost that was less than I had expected. I've seen some reviews that say the workers are slow; in our case, they were meticulous, careful to do every step of the work correctly. Slow? I'm sure they could have done it faster, but it would have been at the expense of quality work. Alejandro and Pedro were friendly, hard-working and highly skilled. We had a great experience with JW Home Improvement. They repaired a hole in our roof rake board in our townhome caused by squirrels. They repaired the hole and added aluminum strips so that the squirrels can not chew through it again. It's astounding to me that this company has any positive reviews whatsoever. I had a list of pretty easy home improvement projects for JW to perform (easy in that any handyman would have been able to complete them, so I've since learned my lesson), and the contractors not only performed the job extremely slowly, but they didn't do any of the work correctly. Our shower door handles were installed backwards, our ceiling fan was installed with the extender attached on an already low ceiling, and our bathroom faucet had the handles aimed downward, instead of outward. These 3 jobs took them over 8 hours to complete. Yes, you read that right; 8 hours to install a shower door, a ceiling fan, and one bathroom faucet. NO WAY. We called to complain and insisted we would not pay the second half for barely any work performed. Eventually JW did stop hounding us and we didn't have to pay the second half, but they did also say they would send a couple more guys out to fix their mistakes, and those guys never showed, and I never received a phone call. AVOID THIS COMPANY AT ALL COSTS. Unless you like being overcharged and the work performed incorrectly. I can provide you with a number to a local handyman who can do far superior work for far less money. If you do insist on using them, do not sign any contract; that way, if their work is not to your satisfaction, you can avoid paying them the remainder of what they wrongly believe is owed to them. read more

We have used JW for more than 8 years. Our latest project was a bunch of small home repairs. Our technicians, Pedro and James, were very friendly, responsive, and knowledgeable. They did all our small projects on time and even found a way to fix our bathroom fan without having to buy a new one. We kept coming back to JW for many reasons, their guys are professional, they buy supplies at local stores and will send you the receipts, and they honor their warranties. Oh where to start with this company! Well, they did hit the trifecta: overpriced, shoddy work and unreliable. (to be fair, the overpriced part is my fault as I should have just said no). I had a roof leak it and it ended up on my master bath ceiling and leaking onto the floor. The section of drywall to repair was probably 4' x 4'. Fix the leak up top and repair the ceiling. Cost to me, the impatient customer? Just under $2000 for one day of work. So again, my bad but I needed it fixed. I should have known better as he said there would be a worker available the next day. That should have been a warning for a couple of reasons; A) they do awful work so they have free time on their hands or B) the really good workers are all busy and I get the one who just doesn't do a very good job. Little did I know it would be C) All of the above. I was given a window for his arrival and it came and went as I had to call to ask what was going on. He "magically" called then to say he was almost there. He was there until almost 8:00 pm. Why? He cuts the drywall incorrectly and rather than fix it outside and come back in, he attaches one end and then spends the next 3 hours sawing little pieces off until it fit. Are you kidding me? Needless to say, he didn't clean up ANY of the debris that went into my closet right below all his sawing. Then all the bags of drywall and insulation get left next to my garbage cans. Maybe I missed that in the fine print, but you would think for $2000 a day I could get the stuff taken away. Oh, and he also left two large pieces not in the bags so the garbage company wouldn't take them, It was a real treat to look at after it rained. So within a week, (yes, the fabulous drywall lasted a WHOLE week) a crack showed up. See picture. And the solution? Inform me the same guy who did it incorrectly last time would be out to do it, what? incorrectly a 2nd time? And guess what? I had ANOTHER appointment window and it came and went. No update from him, no phone call from the company. Nothing! I have a novel idea. My window was 11-1 pm. How about at 11, the office calls the worker to get an estimate, then a quick call to the customer to let them know? I know, I know, it's a crazy concept for a business to take 30 seconds out of their day. Oh well, it was just an idea. Now I guess I'll spend more money to get it fixed. This is the third time we have used this company and it provided outstanding work and advice, as usual. This time it was spray washing and painting our deck, including stabilizing the stairs. In addition, they also replaced an old high-ceiling fan with a new one and changed deck light fixtures. They did other small repair work as well. Equally important, when they began work on something we had asked and saw that it needed something a bit different (not more expensive), they made the suggestion and it was a better idea. Overpriced for installing a screen door I already paid for. While they were on time and did a good job on 7/8, I would not recommend or choose them for any future work. They did a few projects for me to prep my house for moving. Their guys were on time and did great for 1/2 day but seemed to lag the rest. The next day they had equipment issues and killed 2-3 hours fixing them. They did repair work on my horse barn - screwed up sistering joists and planted a metal cutout on the siding vs replacing the wood. They repaired some siding but used the wrong type of boards - missed the ones right next to the correct ones at HD. The moved to a window sill issue and apparently didn't have enough wood so they pieced a few pieces together and chaulked it like a 6 year old. They replaced wood around a failed column but didn't chaulk all the joints. I sent pix in - while there was no supervision on the job one came and was very concerned and promised to repair. I met the supervisor who agreed to fix anything and would be visible during the work. He was not. No one followed-up. I did ask and get some credits but they were still well above a competitor in price with materials. I would not use this company or recommend them. I called JW and was told that I could pay them to do the job again since I'm outside the 1 year warranty period. Not only did we pay more for the job than we were originally quoted (nothing unexpected occurred) but now they want us to pay them a second time for the same job - the job they couldn't complete correctly the first time. ANGE F36054AACAED-to paint kitchen wall before new refridge put in: What started as a 3 hour 'deal' from Angies list for 3 hours of Handy man work; to paint a small kitchen walls where I took down the border [considering backsplash] to turn into $1,326.47 -[minus-$289 Angies list credit for 3 hours]. And unnecessary time involved. 1) Communication issues with Handymen, and Jim Wolohan and receptionist was lacking. Jim called after I booked- wanting me to re-do a review I did last year. I re-read and felt it was spot on. However, I called Angies list to verify if that were possible-but felt it was unprofessional. The receptionist indicted they meant the yelp review I did and it was even more spot on and to the point. I advised specifics that did not happen in that scenario e.g. the handyman not putting the bathroom rack on properly; another came out and replaced the shower head that fell off and as he touched up the tp dispenser it came off as well. He replaced those screws also. As well as glue the piece on the sliding shower door. a) The receptionist had also indicated it would be over 2 weeks before they could do the work. that is when Jim stepped in and advised they could do it Friday b) I was also advised to get semigloss paint which I did. The job entailed painting the kitchen wall after having put in refaced cabinets and border taken down needed walls needed repainting. c) Discussion with Jim was of painting the kitchen and possibly backsplash. I did not think 2 1/2 small walls would take up more than 3 hours; I also pointed out vents for the ceiling that was not accomplished the last time and intake/out registrar. I pointed out cracking on the crown molding which was from their work. He told the work men to cover 2 places where there was cracking. [when they left they had not done this] The Handymen came promptly at 8:30am however there was discussion of what they were doing-and they felt I had the wrong paint-[Home Improvement said it was the right paint]. They left for Lowes at 9:18 and came back at 10:00. The registrars could not be located [as was my case] and they came back with paint. Lunch was 1:30-2:30 an hour. Jim, GM came by asked how it was going. I pointed out the confusion from the morning and that I nixed the backsplash as they said It was not in their Agenda and added the corner cupboard I thought would take a few minutes between paint drying and 2 men. The guy remaining left at 3:30pm the inside of the corner cupboard had not been done nor was the trim. He started packing a little after 3pm-I had not had lunch yet. Jim later called/emailed and gave me dimensions for the registrars which I got at Home depot. I thanked him for giving the correct dimensions. The first 3 hours was covered by Angies List- what supplies are you charging for except the paint which was not necessary? Even with lunch [by law] there were 3 hours after the initial Angies list credit; not to mention the work was not completed correctly - again Another guy came out-'Joe' -putting in the registrars I found at Home Depot and caulked the crown molding. He did a great job but I asked if I were being charged an he didn't know he was on the clock until 11:00 for what I wanted done. I had finished painting the cupboard. For April 14th you have charged for 7.5 man hours twice; Materials 86.47; to the tune of over a thousand dollars excluding the $289. . There are communication issues and exorbitant fees for simple tasks. Communication is through a call center, wait to get to rep. Then they ask a lot of irrelevant questions before scheduling a visit. Salesman came out, had no suggestions, no ideas on the project, was unable to answer questions. We would need to order the new door ourselves, but he was unable to provide any specs for us to use. Everything done at hourly rate, no firm estimate provided, just gave a verbal ballpark of hours required, pretty high. He wanted to schedule on the spot. If I could give them 0 stars, I would. I have used JW before on various handyman services on my rental properties but it has been probably 2 years since so I did not remember their hourly rate. I was given different information at the time of scheduling the estimate of the job and the project manager I spoke with wanted to go through the phone recordings to verify this. I have no issues of him doing so since I was not lying about being told incorrect information on the minimum hours for a job or that they would honor a current promotion going on, but for him to do so makes it feels like the customer is not always right and only extended me this one exception because there of the recording. Customer service is obviously not a strong suit for JW nor do they care to retain any past customers. Their pricing is the same as other companies so if you want a more professional company, go elsewhere. read more

I contacted JW Home Improvement for an estimate to assemble a 6' x 10' shed I purchased from Home Depot for much less than $1,000. I had gotten two earlier estimates of $600 but one person had never assembled a shed and the other was more than qualified but was tied up with other jobs for 2 weeks. I asked the person who took the call about the company's hourly rate but she said that the estimator would have to come out and assess the project. She also said the company charged a $50 deposit that would be refunded if we kept the appointment or applied to the bill if we had the work done. The estimator stopped by the next day and said their hourly rate is $125 per hour per man and that the total cost to assemble the shed would be $2,900. I was incredulous. Of course, the company has the right to charge whatever they want to charge but I will never call them again for anything. I called to protest the $50 deposit because I felt that the scheduler should have told me the company's hourly rate at the beginning. I would never have made an appointment to get an estimate. The person I spoke to about this issue said whether a caller is told their rate ahead of time "depends on how the conversation goes" which is ridiculous. A company's price should be front and center in any conversation and, more specifically, I inquired about they price. I said that if I had been told the hourly rate I never would have booked the estimate because I can do the math and would have known that their cost was more than I am willing to pay. Bottom line, they refused to refund the $50. What a rip-off. read more

This review is just for the estimating experience I had, I did not hire them. Long story short, their hourly rate is high and doesn't make sense for certain tasks. The first thing I was told by the estimator was that they are not worth the money for a lot painting. Called this company to give me an estimate on some shutter repair. One of the shutters on my townhouse had lost a couple of slats; others were beginning to look a little...haphazard. For all I know, JW Home Improvement would have done a great job! I'm never going to find out, because they were way WAY way way way too expensive. The man who came to my house insisted that it would be impossible to repair just the broken shutters; that I needed to completely replace every single one; that this would take a sturdy two-man crew four days of arduous labor; and that it would involve supplies that by all indication of their estimated cost would be flown in one at a time, first class, with beverage service, from Dubai. $9,000. The estimate came in at close to $9,000. And when I asked whether it would be possible just to slap on a Band-Aid--nobody wants to be an HGTV hero in this house--the estimator said, among other things, "Do you want me to call your husband and explain to him why all of this is necessary?" Ew. I ended up calling my homeowner's association for their recommendation and going with the local handyman who's repaired all of the other shutters on the block. His estimate for the work that needs to be done is $375. $375. Will my shutters be as nice or sturdy as they could have been if I replaced them in their entirety? Of course not. THIS IS THE ESTIMATE I RECEIVED FOR A SIMPLE JOB; All JW Home Improvement Projects are subject to a $290.00 minimum for the first (3) Man Hours. All work performed by JW Home Improvement will be billed at regular rates:$88.00 per Man Hour + Materials after the Minimum or any applied promotions. 2 men 2 days to build wall between two bedrooms. Approximately 6ft long and not to the ceiling. Drywall, plaster , trim, prep, prime and paint. 2 men 4 days to remove tile in kitchen and install Cement board and tile. Approximately 75 sg ft MY REPLY; TO PUT UP A SIMPLE SHEETROCK 6 FT WALL to separate one BEDROOM from ANOTHER that the previous owner removed.. IT WILL COST ME $88 PER PERSON X 2 MEN - ASSUMING 2 DAYS EACH AT 8 HOURS =16 HOURS EACH. $2816 plus supplies.. everyone else has quoted me between $400-800 with everything included. IS this JW company CRAZY!! DON'T USE THESE PEOPLE. OH,, and 4 days to replace the small kitchen tile.. Really!!!! 4 DAYS??? It's only 75 square feet.. Actually it was only 65 sq feet,, but they messed up the measurement. I have another contractor measure and it was 65 sq feet,, and told me to buy 70 sq feet worth of tile to be safe. Let me first say I did not have work done by JW Home Improvement. I found them on Angie's List and called for an appointment. I was a bit put off by the $50 deposit required (48 hour cancellation policy) but understood they need to cover themselves. I also didn't love their 4 hour minimum. I decided I'd look around and cancel if I found another company that seemed better. I talked to a woman at JW today, Friday, and my appointment was for Monday. I told her I wanted to cancel because my husband and I thought the 4 hour minimum and $106 hourly rate was too much. She tells me she's sorry but she can't refund my $50 deposit. We go back and forth for a little while. I explain it's more than 48 hours in advance, and NO ONE SAID only on business days. Their fault, not mine. Some schmuck manager says they'll hold my $50 for a future appointment. Um, no thanks. I stood my ground and was about to tell her I'd go to the BBB and file a complaint, but the manager agreed to refund my deposit. I certainly have no plans of ever doing business with them. They are penny-wise and dollar-foolish if they think keeping someone's deposit will make them ever want a future appointment. read more

My low rating was from my phone experience with this company. Afterwards I chose not to use their home improvement services. This is why. I called JW Home Improvements in McLean, VA, to learn of the full extent of services they offer under the Angie's List deal, $149 for 3 hours, of handyman services. The person who answered the phone cut me off during my first sentence and quickly took control of the conversation. He began trying to sell me on different, more costly contract packages. I stuck to my guns on the Angie's List deal. He then informed me that after paying Angie's List for $149 for the 3 hours deal I would be required to have someone from their company give me an in-home estimate on the work to be done before they could schedule an actual appointment to do the work. This was not mentioned in the details their company provided on Angie's List. I brought this to his attention. We concluded that by following their "required" process It would take 2 weeks to schedule an in-home estimate. Following, another appointment would be scheduled in about 2 weeks to have the actual work done. It would be about a month's wait for the work to be completed! I didn't like the reality of having to take off work twice- to be at home for the in home estimate and to be at home once again for the actual day the contractor would do the work. I expressed my displeasure and voiced how unnecessary I found this practice to be since the Angie's List deal is limited to $149 period. It should be my prerogative if I want an estimate on any additional projects after the initial agreement is satisfied. The representative, (salesman), mentioned that their company had another deal. It was on projects requiring less than 3 hours. I was told that this deal is offered without the pre-required in-home estimate. The deal would cost me more money than the $149 Angie's List offer for 3 hours. I declined this "deal" and that "deal." I declined having this company do any work on my home all together. Here"s how come. I like to pay a contractor or home improvement company to do a smaller project or two, first, to see how it goes -before committing to have them do bigger projects. I like for my time to be valued as much as theirs. I am paying for their services. I look for respectful communication, honesty, ethical behavior, companies that honor their own offers and pricing, for their contractors arriving on time, paying attention to details/doing quality work and cleaning up messes they make before leaving my home. JW Home Improvements of McLean didn't make it past respectful communication. read more
