$40 scallop and haddock plate

Was there to grab a dinner to go. I don't live in the area so was staying in the area for business. Purchased a $40 scallop and haddock plate. The portion size is ridiculous for the price and management didn't care when I questioned it. Very dismissive. Manager looked at a bartender and said "you deal With him" and then sat down at his computer. Food was very bland, scallops were slimy and you could tell the stock was previously frozen. Won't be back.

Haddock (requested piccata style), Maine scallops (requested scampi style) w/ side salad, vegetable, mashed potatoes, and French onion soup

My sister and I arrived on a Saturday for dinner. They seemed relatively busy but were still able to seat us by the large open window as requested. The window was a nice spot too because as the local trolley goes by, everyone gets to yell "trolley!" each time it passes. And the trolley passes every 10 minutes or so. Between three of us, we shared Haddock (requested piccata style), Maine scallops (requested scampi style) w/ side salad, vegetable, mashed potatoes, and French onion soup. The haddock and scallops were very heavily buttered but also lots of garlic. I liked their mashed potatoes but found their Boston baked beans to be of a canned quality. The side of carrots and salad were very simply prepared. The star of the show was the french onion soup which was classically prepared. Overall, the food quality is okay but the environment was causal and comfortable. Staff were nice and the location in perfect in the center of town. Would probably want to try other places in the area before coming again but also wouldn't mind if we returned.

Never have an issue getting a table to eat here when I'm visiting. The service is usually pretty good and friendly. This restaurant is in an old, historic type building and has a lot of memorabilia along the walls, which is pretty interesting to look at. I usually come here for French onion soup and a side salad. The side salad is basic, which I just want for the sake of having veggies. But I really love the French onion soup. It has a a delicious cheese crust on top and is gooey. The house bread they serve is also very tasty, fluffy and I enjoy with my meal.

Skip it. Everything was overly fried and just not good. The interior was dingy and dark.

As always we had a great meal at Maxwills after Bath's 3rd Friday Art Walk. Best seafood and steaks around. Wait staff is amazing.

The food is three star. Decent and solid fare. The clam chowder is deserving of a fourth star. Best I have had in and around Bath, ME.

The food is consistently above average, well prepared, dependable, and the kind of meal you're genuinely happy you went out for. The menu is manageable rather than massive, which I appreciate. They know what they do well and don't hand you a small novel and ask you to make a life-altering decision before dinner. The drinks are... fine. Perfectly drinkable, but nobody needs to alert the James Beard Foundation. If cocktails are the main event for the evening, this probably isn't where you'll have a spiritual awakening. But the real magic of this place has always been the people. The wait staff somehow cross that line from "our server" to "they could be a friend," and that's something you can't put on a menu or manufacture with trendy décor. It's nice to genuinely enjoy the people taking care of you. It's locally owned, unpretentious, reliably good, and full of familiar faces. In a city with precious few places that have a personality (instead of a personality disorder) of their own, this one does.

It seemed to be where most people were anyways. The bartender, I think named Greg, was awesome. Even though he was busy, he was quick and attentive. I ordered the filet cooked medium rare for dinner. It was slightly under, more on the rare side, but I didn't complain. Mainly because the couple next to me were non stop complaining and I just didn't want to be a bother. It was still delicious and I don't mind rare steak anyway. I will say, it had an amazing crust on it and was seasoned well. The sauce also paired really nice and wasn't too heavy. The baked potato was also delicious, and they made sure to salt the skin which is bonus points. Overall, I thought it was a cute little restaurant. I liked the vibe and sort of eclectic decor. Food was fresh and delicious. I would definitely come back if I'm ever in town again.

The issues were glaring though. We arrived early for a group reservation of 10 and started at the bar. The service was very slow and we got the sense that the bartender was frustrated that we showed up early with the idea to have a cocktail before our reservation. Bar service continued to be painstakingly slow throughout the night. The restaurant was somehow out of several of their menu options (despite the restaurant not being busy on a weekend day). Not the end of the world, but it left us asking some questions. The major issues really arose when our entree courses were served. They had somehow ran out of french fries, and you could see that in the portion size of the frites in our steak frites (the picture included in our review was our plate -- we had BY FAR the most fries out of those at the table who ordered steak frites). And they ran out of steak - one of the people at our party who ordered steak frites was served a hamburger (which isn't even on the menu). Overall, I thought that we overpaid for the food and if it wasn't for the good company at our dinner - I would have been very frustrated.

We already have some excellent local Asian restaurants but we don't have too many places, serving upscale bistro and pub food in an attractive setting. As this was our first time here, our server, Joshua, Was especially helpful and attentive in beverage and menu selections. And he did a really nice job of trying that all of the dishes came out at the right time in the right order, which isn't done often enough. Joshua highly recommended the falafel and I join him in that recommendation. The switch to lentils is the base made an exceptionally light but tasty version of a wonderful favorite. The mug, fish and cabbage dish was delicious, though maybe a bit larger certain of lentils, maybe with a bit more spice, would've made this dish even better . The risotto with crab was delicious, but the crab was lost in the dish, so it probably would be better as a crabcake or as a amount of crab meat on top of the risotto. And normally addition to risotto are made at the very end anyway, so this makes sense to get the most out of the crab. We had several glasses of wine, with generous pours; the Sancerre was exceptionally good and paired well with everyone's dishes. There are some excellent local beers on top as well for those who want beer rather than wine. One of our group had some of the oysters and said that they were extremely fresh and delicious - they were local from Brunswick (Mere Point). The desserts and after dinner drinks looked good, but we were full enough that we'll wait until another visit to do that.

We had a very large group of 31 guests, and the restaurant did an incredible job accommodating our celebration. With Corinna's help we planned a seasonal menu with oysters, appetizers, main courses and dessert. We started with oysters; a small table was set up near the bar where local oysters were shucked in front of us, presented on the shell with house-made mignonette and cocktail sauces. Very delicious and a great pairing with wine and beer. The bar area was cleared, so that mingling was easy and spacious. After that we were seated at three decorated tables. Then the food started rolling out of the kitchen; house focaccia with maple butter, Bistro Caesar salad, mushroom toast and additional appetizers, all delicious. The focaccia with maple butter and mushroom toast were group favorites. For entrées, the kitchen was killing it with sweet corn risotto, monkfish, and short ribs. We had never had monk fish, so we decided to try it, and boy are we glad we did - outstanding, with lentils, lightly seasoned to let the fish shine through, cooked perfectly. The sweet corn risotto is a plate I will be back for, the gruyere a nice backdrop for the corn. Following up with a simple but elegant dessert of sticky toffee pudding with brown butter-bay leaf ice cream and blueberry ice cream, sweet toffee with a cool, creamy finish; a great combination. Really, really an exceptional meal, our guests are still talking about it a week later. Service was excellent; friendly, efficient and always present, with a smile. The food and the portions were top notch. We can't say enough about it, the atmosphere was laid back but refined, the restaurant was neat and clean and Corinna was flexible, accommodating several last-minute requests. Most importantly, Back River Bistro provided the perfect setting for such a special family celebration. We are so grateful to the entire team for helping make our rehearsal dinner such a memorable evening. I would absolutely recommend Back River Bistro for a special occasion and especially for the incredible food! 5+ stars. We highly recommend!
