This guy and his company are complete garbage. Save yourself and don't hire them. These guys were so rude I had to fire them on the second day of the job and throw them out of my house. Zero respect for your space and property!They are very rude and their work is unimpressive to say the least. This is one of those guys that will say everything you want to hear, then you sign the contract, then he does a complete 180 turn and doesn't give a hoot! Well, I cannot comment on their painting, but their handling of an appointment to give me an estimate, was unacceptable. I made an appointment with them, a week ahead of time, for an estimate for some work. I live in Fremont, a little out of their way, but he said he'd do the work. I won't go into details of my interactions with them, but in spite of speaking with both the man in the office, and the person who supposedly was headed out to give me the estimate (who told me on the phone "I'm almost there, I'll be there in 5 minutes or so", a half hour before I gave up and went to work), nobody every showed up here. I think there are other painters for me to deal with around here, who understand the value of keeping their appointments. read more

Experiences like the one I had with Jim and his crew are healing my contractor trauma (don't ask...let's just say my bathroom remodel was the opposite of a good experience). First off, his bid was extremely competetive for a full range of services. The company has a current license, bonding and insurance--DON'T LET ANY ONE TELL YOU OTHERWISE. Jim provided me with a comprehensive, written quote with project details. The other painters either didn't offer one or gave me something very minimal with only a price. JM paint exteriors with spray gun followed by roller which is important for depth of color and durability. Don't let anyone tell you spraying is enough because Kelly Moore paint has good coverage. Spraying and rolling ensures a long lasting finish--you don't want your paint peeling or fading after a couple of years in the hot California sun. Second, his team arrived on time or early to get the work done. They showed up the night before to powerwash the house so it would be clean and dry for caulking and spackling the next day. Third, the next morning materials were in my driveway by 7AM with the team onsite at 9AM. We were home for part of the work and then had to leave for a mid-day appointment that kept us away until 3PM. When we had returned, the house had already been sprayed and rollered with the body color. They cleaned up and were gone by 5PM. Forth, the last day they were onsite by 8:30AM and predicted they would be done by mid day. They took a little longer...there were completely finished by 2PM. We did a walk around and there were only a few minor areas to touch up. The job was completed to specification nearly a day and a half early! All the time the three man crew worked neatly with organization and attention. I cannot recommend them highly enough. My house looks great and it's evident they did a much better job than the previous painters did. A+++++++++ read more

~ Yelp sucess story~ Came to Yelp to look for a painter for our second story addition since I didn't want to have to sort through the myriad of Craigslist painters... some of whom may be legitimate, and others... well, others who should not even be given a toothbrush to paint with. I looked for the top rated painter in this area (San Jose) and that ended up being James Milliman, so we hired him! Funny thing was that he didn't even know he was on Yelp until I told him I found him there! Granted, there were only 2 reviews (now 3!), but the commentary was so clear, concise, and overll positive, how could I NOT choose these guys. I was not disappointed. The job was VERY well done. I've sat on this review for quite a while now (I started writing it in 2010) because I wanted to make sure it was fairly even-handed but also conveyed our experience with J. Milliman Painting, especially since we hired them based on the reviews here at Yelp. We purchased a house that we wanted painted before we moved in. Since we did not furnish them with keys, my husband opened the site up for Jim's workmen in the morning and closed it at night; this worked fine the first day, but the second day my husband received a call from Jim asking him if he'd been there that morning. Clearly he had, because he opened the site for Jim's crew. Jim then asked him if he turned any lights on, which my husband admitted was a possibility, as it was dark in the morning and he needed to see the house. Jim at that point told him that he had set the bathroom on fire. My first question: how is it that he didn't start the conversation with my husband off as "there's been an accident", "there's been a fire", or somehow tell him that something big had happened? Instead, he tried to put my husband in a position of possibly claiming responsibility without disclosing what had happened, in order to "clear" himself. What had happened: Jim's workmen papered over a heat lamp in the bathroom and left said paper on the heat lamp overnight. (This is clearly a safety violation in a work site that is accessible by other people -- our other contractors and ourselves, for example.) They left no notice that they had done so. They also stuffed paper around all the canned light bulbs, instead of removing them. Somehow, the heat lamp was turned on and at around 11 am, the workmen noticed smoke. (Considering that my husband was at the site well before 8 am, it's not conceivable that he started the fire, as much more damage would have been caused if it had been burning that long.) While it bothered me to some extent that the bathroom was now completely charred (the toilet, shower, floor, and vanity all were burned), Jim originally told me on the phone that he wanted to "make it right" and that he would replace the vanity. However, as time went on, he continued to back out, first saying he would give us $250 for the damage, then that he would paint over the damage, then that we should give him money to cover the work he would end up doing to paint over the damage. He continually blamed my husband more and more for the accident and insisted that we pay the full contract immediately, without having looked at the work his people did. Most offensively, he did not immediately drive to the work site upon being notified that there was a fire -- he waited until the next day! Through email I worked with him, telling him that I would pay the remainder of the contract after doing a site walk-through. He threw around vague references to lawsuits, telling us if we didn't pay him he'd take us to court (which was ridiculous, because we weren't supposed to pay until after the walk-through per his contract, and we weren't threatening him for creating unsafe conditions which led to our house being SET ON FIRE). We finally did a walk through during the daytime (he was pushing for the previous night, when the PAINT WAS STILL WET). That all aside, now that it's been over two years, I can talk to the work that his crew did: his people were not very meticulous and made several rookie mistakes. For example, they used both matte and semi-gloss paint in our other bathroom. There are drips visible on several of the major walls, parts of the ceiling were missed completely (which we unfortunately missed during the rushed walk-through). Jim made us believe initially that he would be on-site for the work, but in actuality never appeared until there were serious issues to be dealt with, and did none of the work himself. They also underestimated the amount of time the painting would take (regardless of the fire itself) and as a result, the things they did towards the end were of much lower quality than the work that they started with (so we have some rooms that look good and some that are much messier. If Jim had handled the issue with the fire with some modicum of professionalism, this review would be entirely different. That said, I cannot recommend this painter. read more

James and his crew are friendly, efficient, and most of all, they did excellent work. My interior job had four paint colors, and they took the time to make sure that they were getting the right colors on the right walls. All fixtures were well covered, and the whole job was very clean. James is licensed, and he pays for worker's comp. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. So they cleaned up after themselves (although there was some dumping of paint out at the back corner of our lot. Jim is a nice clean cut well spoken young man. Hard to get ahold of sometimes - he juggles a busy yelp recommended business. But what prompts this finally get to it review is - I walked into my husbands office ----- to see that the vent still has painters tape still on it and is not painted - it is bare metal silver. What!? Even months later I find stuff that should have been done. It is common sense. (his office was supposed to be matte or eggshell tan but was satin - in beige- yuck- almost like those old cigarette coated shiny once white walls of the 60's - well not as bad... )- my H was OK w/it so did not follow up with J but still someone was not paying attention... . Another yelper said Jim helped with paint colors - absolutely zip help - when I emailed him my ideas - nothing - other than pushing to go for more shiny walls. The sub-contractors were able to paint between the lines and what they did do looked good. In my original order he said he would have his people do a door with louvres - not done. They spray painted the room and it would have been ideal to have that done on the door. iyiyi! Now I have to get spray paint cans and someone who does not have asthma to do it. Another thing when these wokers who spray paint did not have protective equipment to decrease/eliminate inhaling the fumes. This disgusted me to see these poor guys working this way. Need to take care of employees better and supervise more closely. He had a guy come out for the back up work - and he spent 5 hours here to paint trim - and twice when I opened the door to look in there was a minor racket - now I think he was sleeping. Jim asked why it took so long. At the time I did not know - now looking back - I believe his guy was literally sleeping on the job. A young guy who did not speak English and was probably working too many jobs and/or drinking -eyes very red. In a 'play room' he said he would do everything from floor to ceiling but when the base board wasn't covered which would have been easy to do by moving the tape off down 2 inches (!) - he said oh that's extra in the post walk through - despite me clearly pointing it out in our original discussion. He also used some type of floor paint on our cement that scraped off too easily. Not bad but not real good either. read more

My wife and I heard from our HOA that we needed to repaint our house so I went in search of a good painter. after getting bids from about 6 different painters Jim showed up on time to our last appointment. Jim worked with me on how to do the exterior of our house. He was very quick to get us a bid via email and it was the cheapest bid by far. I emailed him the instructions from our HOA (paint colors/ color schemes) and he knew exactly what to do. The crew showed up early and were very professional. I must say, I was a little skeptical that two guys could paint my 3 story house in just 3 days...i was WRONG! They power washed, touched up the stucco, and painted just like they said they would. After searching through yellow pages, Craigslist, and Yelp ... We got a few bids for painting our kitchen cabinets. Jim came out for the bid, and seemed a lot more knowledgeable than the other contractors. He was also willing to work with me on pricing options. I decided to go with J Milliman after meeting Jim, knowing that they were licensed and insured, and reading great the Yelp reviews. I was not disappointed. His team was on time, professional, and just all around nice guys. I felt totally comfortable leaving them at the house alone without supervision while I went to work. The final product was great, the cabinets look so good, just like they came out of the factory (no brush strokes, since they were sprayed). I don't remember how we heard of Milliman Painting, but I'm certainly glad we did! We have a very open house plan with high cathedral ceilings, and we were renovating a large area of our home (dining room, living room, part of the upstairs area, plus a long stairway). Renovating our ceiling was an enormous task in itself--Jim's team very professionally prepared this entire area for ceiling finish removal by covering absolutely everything with plastic--and I do mean "everything," including the floor, the walls and every piece of furniture. It was quite amazing--it looked surreal! They did a fantastic job of removing (be prepared for a mess, but it's all contained within the plastic protected area), retexturing and painting the ceiling and the beams. Next, all of our walls were painted--many areas needed minor repair work that should have been done properly by the original builder but wasn't. In addition, Jim's men painted and installed new baseboards throughout the area. Our entire staircase had been updated, so that, too, needed careful prepping and painting. And finally, Jim prepped and painted almost 20 new doors we had installed throughout the house. Jim's project manager, Luis, was a great worker and pleasant to work with, responding immediately to any matters needing attention. Every appointment time was met either on the dot, or a phone call was made to us if there was any delay. It is obvious that Jim cares about his customers--he made sure that we were satisfied with every detail! If we had a request to add a task to the job, change a paint color, or re-sand and re-paint a door (our doors needed additional sanding than was normally required), our requests were graciously and immediately met, even if it meant an inconvenience to his schedule. All of Jim's dealings with us were handled in a most professional manner, and his pricing was fair. We are very happy with the finished work and with the stress-free process in getting there. We definitely will be calling on Jim for our future painting projects, and we are eager to give Jim our highest recommendation! read more

!!!CAN'T EVEN KEEP AN APPOINTMENT FOR AN ESTIMATE!!! I scheduled an estimate with Jim for which I took a few hours off from work to meet on a Thursday morning. First issue: He did not show up citing that there was a misunderstanding in scheduling me in. I excused this as stuff like this happens and confirmed with Jim over the phone that he would in fact come over the next day at noon sharp. I took time off of my busy work schedule and waited for Jim until 1:30pm. You not only did he not show up, he didn't call or email me to let me know. The first thing that happened is when we made an appointment for him to come out for an estimate at 9AM, he turned up 30 minutes late. We didn't think much about this at the time. At our appointment he told us he used Kelly Moore paint and he would provide us with a color consult. When he came to a second appointment, I asked him to see his color swatches, which in turn he told me that he forgot them. He said to go and pick out our colors at Kelly Moore, we emailed him the Kelly Moore swatch names and numbers. We signed the contract, set up the time and dates for when he would start. The contract did say he uses Frazee, glidden paints and Kelly Moore but all he talked about was Kelly Moore. We now believe that what he means is he buys his paint at Kelly Moore, but it isn't necessarily Kelly Moore brand. If we had known that he would be using Frazee paint at our house we would have picked Frazee swatch colors. On the day he was supposed to start he showed up 30 minutes late again and his people showed up over an hour late. This continued everyday with them showing up late (appox. 30 minutes each day). When his people showed up to paint the first day, I was confused because they had a different brand of paint from what we picked out. My wife asked the main person what was up with this? He told her that Frazee paint was the same as Kelly Moore paint. Even James Milliman told her later that Frazee paint was a higher brand of paint, then Kelly Moore. She noticed that the paint colors were not the same as the swatches she had painted on the wall. When asked he proceeded to say it was probably that we picked the wrong colors. After the job was done I contacted Kelly Moore and they told me that Frazee paint was in deed a cheaper paint. This now makes sense why the colors don't match. Although we decided to cover as much of our things as possible we expected them to cover things too. Which didn't happen. Unfortunately his people got paint on several pieces of our furniture, bedspread, wood flooring and front door. According to the contract they were supposed to leave us with plenty of extra paint for touch ups, which they didn't because they didn't have any extra. Not even a week went by and I noticed several areas that didn't get painted. So I called them back, and James explained to me that it was to late and that I had my chance when I had my so called walk thru. I was appalled by his comment. I was very upset by then and sent him an email regarding this matter, especially because his proposal said that they would leave extra paint so we could do our own touch ups. He then emailed my wife back saying that he didn't want her to have a bitter taste in her mouth and that they would come back and fix the unpainted areas. He did come back as a favor, and left us two out of four colors and painted the areas we had found up to that point. Now the closets are peeling which according to the contract is warrantied against for 5 years and unfortunately was painted with one of the colors he didn't provide us. My wife emailed him again and he basically told her that he couldn't make us happy. In the past we have had good experiences with contractors, but we are now more wary. We would NOT recommend this person/business. He is unprofessional and does not comply to his contract/proposal. read more

what happened to a company that received so many good reviews? After I read the last 6 review about J Milliman painting, I called them right away to come by and give me a quote. They set up a time with me and I came home from work to wait for them, they never showed up. Called me one hour later saying that they got confused and went to another customer's house. This excuse sounded weird to me, but I agreed to have them come over the next day. And guess what, again nobody showed up, this time there was not even a phone call to explain why! I just had my bedrooms repainted by these guys and they did a really good job. There was one room which had this funky shade of blue from floor to ceiling and they covered it up with a much more fitting hue. They really took their time making sure they did the job right, thus making me one satisfied customer. I trusted yelp to help me find a great painter who could help me out quickly - with family coming in over the holidays. James responded in a very efficient manner to my request and came over to give me an estimate right away. He was professional and was very responsive. His crew came in to do a terrific job on my family room and hallways and the place looked great for Christmas. They were easy to have in the house and cleaned up completely. As a bonus, he recommended his friend to replace my baseboards and doortrim. They finished the whole job within the week and it looked great. Unfortunately I need to add an update here. Still quite pleased with the quality of the paint job itself. However, I was disappointed with a couple things after the fact. #1, I received no response to my request for an invoice after the job was completed and paid for. I requested an invoice in my reply to Jim's email to me checking in after the job, in which he requested that I write a yelp review. So I find that somewhat disappointing and self-serving. #2, I subsequently found paint dumped in my garden on my plants! I'm pretty angry about that, actually. 1-19-09 I am really pleased with the job Jim's crew did painting my living room and hallway. Some of the retexturing and patch disguising is miraculous. Professional, competitively priced, on time, clean, quality work. Jim's foreman Luis is a good guy. He was very consciencious about finding out exactly what I wanted with certain details instead of making assumptions. And he was considerate about not letting my cats out. Hired Milliman in the Spring of 2010 to paint the interior of my home. I would not recommend this company. He used cheap paint. Within 18 months, I had to repaint my 2 story stairwell, upper hallway and bedrooms because the blue paint had faded to white. This was not due to sun damage - the paint was faded out of direct sun as well. I am posting this review 3 years later only because I met a man who used to work for Milliman - and was part of the crew that painted my house back in 2010. This man came by to purchase something from me I had on Craig's List. He admitted that Milliman was known for using cheap paint. Milliman was expensive. I thought that I had gotten my money's worth (the crew was meticulous and polite), but time showed that inferior paint was substituted for quality paint. Jim's crew painted both the exterior and interior of my house. Jim was prompt and knowledgeable when he gave me his bid, and started the job very soon afterward. His foreman, Luis, was very helpful and easy to work with. The final results were very nice and I've gotten compliments on the work. One tip: Jim is easiest to reach via text on his cell phone. ETA: I had Jim's crew back a second time and reduced my rating from 5 stars to 4 stars. The quality of the painting wasn't quite as good the second time around, and it was difficult to get in touch with Jim for a third quote. We only communicated via email, we never did a walkthrough for a punch list, and he did not respond to my email punch list. We had the entire interior of our house painted. Very reasonably priced. Professional. Reliable. Showed up and called when he said he would (i dealt with Jim). When we did the initial walkthrough/estimate, he was very intuitive with questioning exactly what we wanted versus what we didn't want. He asked leading questions, but let me pick/choose everything. That is the best way to run a business for sure. Some of the other painters we got estimates from were either too expensive, or when we did the walkthrough, they weren't very detailed in their assessment. When you're painting, there are lots of little details, and Jim paid attention to every one of them. This made us feel much more comfortable that he took the time to care about all the particulars. There was some complexity to the job he did for us, (removing some paneling and wallpaper), and he put 110% effort into that as well, with wonderful results. In the end, the work that was done looks beautiful, he was done when he said he'd be done, and we couldn't be happier. I notice a little bit of the paint peeling in various places in the house, but i'm not sure if that's something the painters did or not? I don't think so. All in all, we're extremely happy with the price, the courtesy, and the job that was done. I have only one minor negative, and it's not really a negative. I had to do a little bit of cleaning after the painters left. Some garbage (drinks, etc) was left behind, as well as some paint spills/sprays (mostly on the wood floors). I was surprised they didn't cover the floors completely when they painted? However, I have never hired a painter so I don't know if this is normal or not. After debating for quite a while whether or not to tackle painting our kitchen cabinets ourselves, we decided that it was the kind of task for a professional. We found Jim here on Yelp, and I have to agree with all of the positive comments! We had him bid as well as another company bid, and they came in very close in pricing (very reasonable), but Jim seemed so much more knowledgeable, asked all kinds of questions about what we wanted, and best of all, was able to come out the very next week and get the job done in just a few days, just in time for our big housewarming party!! He and his crew were quick, very clean, efficient, and best of all - the cabinets turned out BEAUTIFULLY. He suggested that we use some kind of laquer / paint mix that honestly makes our cabinets look as though they were manufactured white originally, rather than being painted later on. I found Jim on Craigslist to do some crown moulding on my cathedral ceilings. I had some quotes from others who highball me and never followed up. Jim Milliman Painting was highly recommended by a neighbor for exterior and interior painting. We were pleased by the end result of the exterior paint. They took care of stucco cracks and caulking windows and doors. They also did a wonderful job removing the acoustic ceiling, texturing, painting and cleaning up.
