But after redoing our garden beds and restoring our original exterior windows, that hideous slab became un-ignorable. It turns out finding someone willing to build a new porch is really difficult. We spoke to six different companies and most wouldn't be transparent about their pricing, quoted insanely high numbers, had spend minimums, tried to forgo the vision entirely to be closer to (but still above) our budget, or never replied. We reached out to Jack, not expecting much different, but were immediately impressed by the time he took to speak with us about our porch and design goals. He walked us through different considerations, proposed different materials, and answered questions to be sure we were all aligned and the integrity of everything would be solid. He then sent us an incredibly detailed recap and proposal of what he would do with itemized pricing, really underscoring his authenticity in wanting to be a true partner. Throughout every step of the project, Jack made sure to consult with us through any decision we needed to make or reconsider based on the actuality of what we were encountering. In construction, the only guarantee is that something will come up, requiring flexibility, and every time it did, Jack had solutions that actually ended up exceeding our original design. He was also incredibly patient whenever we deliberated on different ideas or when we were moving through his workspace. His commitment to our project and work was noticed and remarked on by multiple neighbors, as he and his team worked through long days and some brutal summer heat to get it done before we had family visiting. In fact, several stopped Jack, or us, to get his contact for themselves. Whenever it came to the finishing details, like custom balusters and top rails, Jack was quick to be critical of when a piece didn't turn out as well as the rest, pointing it out and starting over. Jack also had to laminate multiple pieces of wood together and seek out a specific machine to achieve the custom rounded top rail we were after for the new railing. By the end of it, Jack delivered us a porch that exceeded our expectations and our initial hopes. Having worked with so many vendors on so many different projects, we taught ourselves to not expect perfection but in this case, Jack delivered the closest to that of anyone, ever. The truth is, there just aren't many craft people like Jack around anymore. And there are even far fewer with customer service as incredible as their talent. Jack is one in a million and we consider ourselves supremely lucky to have met him and that he had availability in his project schedule.

Alex, the owner, is a genuinely talented carpenter with a great eye for design. His angled shelving solution for the shoe closet was really clever. We were very particular about measurements and custom details, and Alex delivered exactly what we asked for. Even when we requested adjustments after installation had already begun, he found solutions and made everything work for us. The installers were really professional, detail-oriented, and respectful of our home. They were very organized and worked cleanly. In addition to the new closets, Alex helped us resolve a few issues with our existing kitchen cabinets and island (done by another company). He worked with the materials we had, recommended improvements, and the final result looks great. We really enjoyed working with Alex and look forward to doing another project with him in the future.

The process of coordinating an inspection was…read moresmooth, and what stood out to me about this company vs. other handymen we contacted was that they actually explained their proposed solution, part of which was investigating/understanding the root cause of the leak vs. pivoting immediately to "reinstall window" or "re-caulk". My trust was validated when the team they sent were able to identify some exterior stucco cracks as the source of the leak and even did some testing with our garden hose to verify. Communication to schedule was fast, and the job was completed in a timely manner. We did get some rain recently, and I didn't see any leaks, so hopefully that's the end of that! Will definitely consider them again for other home repair projects.

This is solely my experience when I got a quote for changing out my bad Automatic Shut Off Valve…read morewith a brand new one that I purchase myself since it was on sale from a trusted, reputable website. I found The Affordable & Licensed Handyman through Yelp because they had great reviews so I was interested to see how much their service fee would be for a simple job when I was looking for a plumber. I needed a license plumber due to home insurance requirement to do this installation or I would've done it myself. They were responsive when I talked to them through Yelp projects. I was shocked with how much I was quoted because it was almost double the price of the automatic shut off valve device I paid for. So I had to confirm that the price that was given to me was just to switch out the bad unit with the new one. They didn't have to do anything else like run new pipes or replace anything else. When I communicated to them that the quote was high, they asked how much did i wanted to pay. I thought they would try to be more reasonable since the name is The Affordable. I give them a range based on the prices from other plumbing company that I reached out to and they couldn't do it which I understand they can set their own prices. Maybe for big projects, they'll give more of a reasonable price which is why they have great reviews on Yelp but just to replace a bad automatic shut off valve with a brand new one, I think it was overprice so I used another plumbing company where they were very reasonable on the price.
