Miso glazed Seabass with broccolini and sticky rice
    Rachel L.

We kicked off the evening with the Smoked Old Fashioned, which set the bar ridiculously high right out of the gate. It arrived at the table in a carafe trapping a cloud of rich smoke that infused the drink through your second pour, paired with a neat, custom-stamped ice cube. To start our meal, we shared a giant Wedge Salad that was practically a meal in itself--loaded with creamy ranch dressing, fresh tomatoes, crispy bacon, onions, and boiled egg. When it came to the entrees, both dishes hit a home run: The Miso Glazed Sea Bass was cooked to absolute perfection--flaky, delicate, and packed with flavor. It was paired with sticky rice and broccolini that was surprisingly good and held its own against the main event. Across the table, the Top Sirloin was prepared flawlessly, cooked perfectly to temperature and accompanied by crisp-tender asparagus and smooth, delightfully whipped potatoes. Even after a satisfying meal, we couldn't resist dessert. The Chocolate Mousse was the ultimate grand finale--rich and velvety without being overly sweet, closing out an incredible night on the perfect note. J. Gilbert's delivers on every level, from the bar to the kitchen. Service was extraordinary. We'll definitely be back!

A disappointment. We came here because we were recommended it by a friend who said it was one of the best steaks. The steaks we had were good. Everything else was mediocre. The service was slow; our server, Michael, never filled our waters, cared more about the alcohol sales, and our wait for everything was long. All the sides were simple, and the Mac and cheese felt like it was baking under a heat lamp for hours. The French onion dip was forgotten about and we had to remind the server about it, thus coming out way late. One highlight was the Cesar salad. That was delicious. Would not recommend for the price, because if you're paying $60+ for a steak, you can find someplace better.

Whoa! Been coming here for years and this place STILL delivers incredible food with impeccable service! Located near Old Overland Park, J. Gilbert offers patrons fantastic food and dining options in a warm and inviting atmosphere, perfect for intimate dining with loved ones or friends. Service is some of the best I've seen in KC and the menu items are "to die for." Every time I go, I tell myself I'm going to try something new off the menu, but then the Seafood Mixed Grill calls me again. It's incredible and I get it every time. However, one day I'll explore other options from their wide variety. One cannot go wrong at J. Gilbert's....to say I'll be back is an understatement.

Very friendly great staff always willing to do something unique outside the normal realm of what's on the menu incredibly attentive even when they're busy they're very helpful with bringing the free bread which is honestly amazing. It's sourdough if you like that some of these pictures might be a little bit old because I don't think they have the bacon anymore. Very upscale, nice ambience but the prices are quite reasonable for happy hour until 630.

I enjoyed my dining experience, our server Rich he is a treasure! We sat in a booth in the bar area. I truly enjoyed my pineapple martini, had 2! My appetizer was fresh oysters on the half shell! They were so fresh I could still taste that hint of ocean water! What a treat living I. The Midwest and you get that taste of ocean it's a blissful reminder of being by the ocean. My cauliflower au gratin the hit of the sides. Really good and cheesy pure comfort food. Grilled seafood plate had an assortment shrimp crab cake scallops, and salmon. Dessert was the crème brûlée and apple Blondie.

Surprised my husband for his birthday dinner at J Gilbert's and it's now in our "great date places" list. It's dimly lit - which sets the mood for a romantic evening. Although they have an extensive wine and drink menu, we opted for a dry evening. He started with 3 oysters which were medium sized and served with a unique onion Champaign accompaniment. For our entrees, he selected the seafood mixed grill which allowed sampling multiple seafood options. The fire-kiss on the shrimp and asparagus was amazing. The crap cake was almost entirely crab, which was divine. I selected the sockeye salmon special (actually ordered the last one they had!) with green beans and whipped potatoes. The salmon was incredible served with a lemon butter. (The sockeye was more flavorful than the non-sockeye served with the seafood mix grill). Loved the green beans with roasted pecans! Because it was his birthday, he was given a free desert and selected the crème brûlée. It was perfect - exactly as expected with a classic crème brûlée. I'd read and seen pictures of the 24 layer chocolate cake and had to get one to go (we were way too full!). Obviously, it's a huge slice (no joke, probably weighed nearly 2 pounds) and can easily serve 4. It is so moist and rich! It's a must try!

Strip with Asparagus and ancho butter sauce. You could skip the sauce, nothing special.

As we make our rounds at all the top steak restaurants in the KC area, this one finally on our list. This one is worth a trip. To start off. Great dark steak house environment. Dark Leather and wood. The rich atmosphere and smell of cooking meat. Fresh bread to the table. Wedge salad was excellent. Then I get the KC strip which was cooked perfectly. It didn't taste aged for very long if at all. There's no advertisement about that and usually steak joints rave about their aging. This is a key factor in why a steak is premium and fetches a premium price. Aging makes a massive difference. I was pleased that I got some sides with my steak. I had mashed potatoes and asparagus. Creme Brulée for dessert. Everything was excellent. Service was top notch as you would expect.

We went here for my birthday and it was delightful. They thoughtfully left a card on the table and gave a free dessert. Three of us had their delectable crab bisque and one a wedge salad. The steaks are so very good! I could eat that every day. Service was really wonderful- friendly people who actually seemed happy to be a part of the celebration. [I'm not kidding myself, they're paid to be like that, but it's still nice.] it was a lovely evening in a quiet restaurant, spent with family. It's one of my folk's favorite places and I can certainly see why. Even the small things are great- the whipped potatoes exceeded expectations. I got the prix fixe menu and my very favorite dessert, a wonderful crème brûlée. However, we also got a delicious, beautiful slice of chocolate cake. Everything combined made for just a lovely dinner.

Kansas City restaurants are awesome. This steakhouse is beautiful inside, dark and romantic. Our server Daniel was top notch! The food was excellent, steak done to perfection, Daniel's suggestion for seafood was the mixed grill, absolutely amazing. Oh, most importantly this was on a Saturday evening...food and service still perfect.

Here on vacation and wanted a good steak dinner for our family of 5. The meal was amazing! Jordan was an excellent waiter. Very attentive and fun! I would recommend visiting this restaurant if you are in the area.

He gave the KC strip a 7 out 10. I loved the potato gratin that he ordered. It definitely gives "I was formally a sports bar that was hap hazardly put together to try to pass off as an upscale restaurant." It feels cold and unwelcoming in a way. The music over head was barely audible adding to the sterile feel of the space. So bottom line for me, I liked the food well enough, but with the ambiance and service lacking, I won't return.

Several dishes were overly salted, and the Caesar salad was especially sad--wilted lettuce and lacking freshness. The restaurant was very crowded, but not adequately staffed to handle the volume. Service was slow throughout the night, and they ran out of items on the Restaurant Week menu. I was served melted sorbet and had to send it back. Our dinner took nearly three hours, largely due to long stretches of waiting to be served or checked on. Busy nights are understandable, but the lack of pacing and execution really took away from what could have been a much better experience. They had a jazz band playing which was a nice experience. If you go, ask for a table on the right. We were on the left side and about frozen every time the front doors opened, which was a lot while the band was bringing in their equipment.

For our drinks we orders 'Have a Cigar' and a low sugar mocktail they created for me. Both were made very well and were super refreshing. For our mains, we ordered, 'Black Cardamon Burnt ends', 'Tandoori Chicken' and 'Smash burger with peri peri fries' and for desert we ordered the parle g mango ice-cream' sandwich with some aromatic chai. My most favorite dish out of all were the burnt ends - they had a superb fusion flavor of Indian spices which went well with the meat and paired well with the grits. Trust me when i say this that i would eat this everyday for the rest of my life if i could. The smash burger and peri peri fries were excellent and definitely hit the spot. The real disappointed was with Tandoori chicken. I felt the chicken did not pair well with the sambar risotto and the fried okra even though it tasted good, was an after thought. The rice in the risotto was very grainy and undercooked. I told that to our server and they instantly apologized and acknowledged the issue and also proceeded to remove the dish from our bill. After that the chai was very warm and comforting and the parle g ice-cream biscuits were nostalgic and a great way to finish the meal. While not every dish was perfect, i love the excellent customer service they provided and the way the owner/manager/staff handled our feedback. I will be back to try more food here - 5/5.

My wife and I had our anniversary dinner here a few weeks ago, and had a great experience!…read more We made a reservation for a Friday evening during primetime. We were seated on time at a table next to the bar-side of the dining room. Speaking of the dining room, it's a nice, if standard size for a strip-mall space, but I really appreciated that the tables were not stacked on top of each other, as seems to be the case at more and more places these days. It felt like there might be some chance of our entire conversation not being completely overheard by our neighbors, which was nice for a change! Our waitress was fantastic! She walked us through the menu, the restaurant's approach to cooking and seasonality, some of her faves, and made wonderful recommendations! We decided to split a few small plates, which was a great approach! We got to try about 1/3 of the small plate menu, and loved it all! It was all great, but the Black Cardamom Burnt Ends are NOT to be missed! It made my cardamom-loving, Midwest soul very, very happy indeed! The space is a really nice size - not massive or overwhelming - and with the shades drawn down (to seal out the late afternoon sun, thank goodness!) and dim lighting, the mood vibes were solid for a romantic anniversary dinner! The other ambiance item of note is that the restroom corridor smelled absolutely fantastic! Upon investigation, it was due to a burning candle from a lovely local-KC company that was custom made for the restaurant! Yes, they're for sale, and yes, we picked up two! While everything was lovely and the food was very good, you're definitely paying a high price for it. Not that it's not deserved, but the "value" feels aren't necessarily "off the charts", by any means. And that is really my only critique, if there is any at all! Food = 5/5 Facility = 4/5 Service = 5/5 Ambiance = 4/5 Value = 3/5

Make reservations because they had a two hour wait for walk-ins. For appetizers we shared their burnt ends. Tender and sauced perfectly. For dinner we shared a wedge salad, their mashed potatoes, asparagus (a must!), and their tomahawk steak! Instead of doing three separate steaks we did the one and it was a perfect size for all of us to share! The steak was tender and well seasoned, mashed potatoes creamy, and the asparagus was prepared in a way we hadn't had before - highly recommend! We also had their dessert lemon meringue pie and coconut cream pie! Really really good! Wine options: amazing! Bourbon options: classy! We couldn't give it five stars for two main reason: 1. We made a reservation for 7pm, arrived and check in at 6:50 and still had to wait just over 30 minutes to be seated. We learned that walk-ins had been seated ahead of us so we needed to wait for some tables to leave before we could be seated. This was a bit surprising. We understand waiting a few minutes, but 30 min is not okay. 2. The sweet server assisting us for dinner was in training and we learned from her "trainer" that she wouldn't be getting any of the tips from our dinner. Additionally, the "trainer" came over around 830 to tell us that although it was only three of us that gratuity is automatically included. Very odd that we were told these things during our meal. The server being trained should absolutely get a portion of the tips - we hope restaurant management reconsiders their policy on this especially since we hardly saw her "trainer". We normally tip over the 20% but because the trainer didn't get any of our tips, we opted to not increase the tip that was automatically charged to us. All in all really classy restaurant and food was delicious! We'll be back for sure!

The space was nice and clean, but unfortunately, the service and the "famous" main course didn't quite deliver a stellar performance. Our table was split--some wanted dinner, some wanted dessert. This apparently threw our waiter into a state of deep existential confusion. The Food: I ordered their "famous" fried chicken, customizing it to three thighs (which came with homemade pickles and a fantastic ham gravy). For $24, it wasn't bad, but it's definitely not "famous" for flavor--maybe just famous for the price tag. Honestly, I could have filled up at Popeyes for a fraction of the cost. Surprisingly, the absolute star of my meal was the side of sautéed mushrooms. It came with little pearl onions, shallots, and green peas. I topped it with some of my friend's arugula to make it fancy, and it was delicious. The Service (or lack thereof): Here's where it went downhill. The dessert order became a saga. Those who ordered sweets expected them to arrive with the mains, but we had to ask several times just to get them toward the end of the meal. By the end, our waiter seemed completely frustrated with our existence. He aggressively boxed up the remaining desserts and semi-forcefully shoved the credit card machine into our faces to shuffle us out the door. Great mushrooms, aggressive math at the end. Proceed with caution.

The scampi had a generous portion of good size shrimp. The pork chop was very thick and large yet was very flavorful and tender. The pork chop came with mashed potatoes and seasoned vegetables. The carrots were delicious and there was a lot of them. The cornbread tasted good but was a little dry. Next time I would stay with the carrots but try something else. As I said the pork chop was very big and I took about half of it home. When I placed my order the waiter asked if I wanted to order a second pork chop, which I passed on.
