Our meal was absolutely fantastic. This was hands down the best Trout I have ever had. I love trout, but I don't find it offered in restaurants often. My fiancé was craving a steak, so when I saw J.Alexander's had a Trout Almondine on the menu, we had to go. Our drinks took a while to come out, but it was a weekend dinner and the place was pretty packed. Our server was kind and apologetic. The drinks were a little strong so for the second round we switched to beers. My fiancé ordered the Prime Rib. It doesn't list it on the menu but it comes in a variety of sizes, all the way up to 32oz! He ordered the 20 and was very happy with how it came out. I was so happy with every part of my entree. The trout, broccoli, and couscous were all perfect. The portion sizes were huge, so we probably didn't need the Caesar salads to start. I came here on a weekday evening, and it was pretty busy. The service was great the whole night, and we ordered some appetizers for the table. They were pretty good. I really enjoyed the fries' crispiness and the shrimp's flavor. The chicken was like typical chicken tenders, nothing special but still tasty. I got the yuzu mule, which was really good, nice and sweet so I couldn't taste much of the alcohol. For my entree, I wanted to try the prime rib, and I requested medium rare. It was definitely cooked to medium rare, and maybe even a little close to rare, but I didn't mind. The flavor was good, and the creamy potatoes on the side complemented it perfectly. read more

I dined at J. Alexander's on Thursday night and overall had a great experience while I was there. The drinks were well made, and the food was really good--no complaints on that front. Unfortunately, the experience took a turn after I left. I accidentally left my Ray-Ban sunglasses on the table. I understand that was my mistake--accidents happen--but I've since called back twice to check if they were turned in and was told they were not. That's honestly pretty disheartening. It's frustrating to think that instead of being turned into lost and found, someone may have taken them. While I enjoyed my time there, this definitely left a bad impression. Just a heads up to others--be mindful of your belongings, as it seems like lost items may not always make their way back. read more

First, I had a special of Grouper with a jalapeño sauce on top, and it was fantastic. This was one of my best main courses I've had in some time. The reason for the 2 stars was the service. We ordered cocktails initially, and it took so long to receive those that we ordered entrees before our drinks came. Any time we need a refill or anything we had to flag down our waiter. Went to J. Alexander's for the first time. Service was good, but food and ambiance are a bit old-fashioned for my taste. Calamari was the best of what we got -- fried to perfection and tender, not gummy. Prime rib cooked perfectly but a bit bland for our taste. The au jus usually saves the prime rib but that was bland too. Smashed potatoes was a good side, but again lacks good flavor. Steak and fries were okay -- nothing to write home about. Came out to celebrate. Haven't been here in over a decade. It was a super cold day. We had reservations. We received it pretty quickly. It was a super busy night. The staff was amazing. We had the Emerald Coast shrimp as an appetizer. The breading had a nice flavor into it really good texture, and crunch. 4/5 I had the steak burger, which I will give a three out of five. The burger itself was tender, but lacked flavor. The sauce that was used beneath the patty was a little too sweet for my liking, and also made the bottom bun soggy. The fries themselves were too crispy, almost like potato chips, less like string fries, with a nice crisp softness to the inside. 3/5 The trout, on the other hand, was a five out of five; it was full of flavor. The broccoli was nice, and tender & the couscous was amazing 5/5 The carrot cake was a four out of five, super hot when it came to the table, nice and sweet, full of flavor very good portion size. 4/5 The spice pear was definitely spicy, but had a strong pour, very generous, and a good flavor to it. Overall, I would give the visit a four out of five 4/5 If you haven't been or haven't been in a long time, like us, I highly recommend you come back. I was excited to try this place after a friend recommended it. I was told they had the best prime rib! So I was pretty excited to try it. I ordered the prime rib and mac and cheese. Everything looked really good and the vibes are super chill and relaxing but this ended up being extremely disappointing. The Mac and cheese was pretty watery and lacked flavor. The prime rib was just missing something. For the price I feel like this should have been much better. Just bland and my potato's were cold. I brought most of it home. The also forgot my au jus. Service was kinda strange. I felt like they didn't want our table. Maybe it was just a bad day for everyone. read more

To celebrate our anniversary, we booked a reservation at J. Alexander's. It was for a Tuesday night. We walked in and the place was packed, we were surprised. We waited a few minutes and got seated. I was a little surprised that they do not bring any bread for the table. For an upscale restaurant I would expect more. Our waiter was okay. We had to search for him a couple of times. He either was covering a lot of tables or was not into it. Again, being our anniversary, we were expecting an upscale experience. One of us got the Maui steak and the other the filet. Both of us got baked potatoes. The steaks were delicious. Definitely 5 stars, however the experience was disappointing. The potatoes come with sour cream, butter, cheese and bacon. We do not like sour cream, so we asked for the fixings on the side. They were brought over in little bowls. Okay, however, one of the bowls was a combination of dabs of sour cream and butter in the same bowl, this was not going to work. Once we tracked down our waiter, we were able to get some more butter. As I mentioned it was our anniversary. Let's just say it has been many decades. So, we were assuming we would be getting something in that honor. Well, the bill came and nothing. We decided to ask for the manager. He came over and we asked why they asked us, when we made the reservation, if we were celebrating anything and yet they did not nothing to recognize it. He wrote it off by saying sometimes things happen. He almost seemed bothered that we were taking up his time with this. At the point he did offer us a desert, but we had enough and said goodbye. As I said the food was great, however the atmosphere and the experience were less than desirable, especially for celebrating an event. read more

Ambience- a very dark steakhouse , with enough light to see the menu, and an oasis when it's a scorching 100 F outside. Had a craving for a great french dip sandwich, ended up here, Between the soft bun, a bit of horseradish sauce, very thinly sliced prime rib peaces, and a perfect au jus bowl my jowels, taste buds and teeth had a party!!! The shoestring fries were really tasty too with either the small bowl of ketchup, or dipped in the au jus. We received two gift cards for this gem of a steakhouse and were finally able to use them last week. As first timers, we were impressed by the interior with massive beams and high ceilings. The restaurant is massive and was packed as it seems it always is! Make sure you make a reservation a few days in advance or a week for a prime time weekend slot. Everything on the menu looked great, but we had to try the Spinach and queso dip with chips. Add a red Sangria and a Mojito to the mix and boom, solid! We opted for the Prime rib dinner (their most famous dish) Medium Rare with smashed potatoes and Center cut Filet Mignon with a loaded baked potato. We also added the house salads with Honey Mustard. Everything was perfect! The food was brought out at perfect intervals after we would finish the previous, and any finished plates or glasses were removed from the table within seconds. Neither of us have ever had a steak melt in our mouths like these! I believe the dry age them, but the tenderness was unlike anything we had ever seen! My husband and I went to dinner tonight to celebrate an early Mother's Day. We had reservations and arrived early to have a drink at the bar. My husband's Old Fashioned was nothing special. My Pear Martini was so strong that I couldn't drink it. For dinner, we were seated at a booth across from the bar, instead of the dining room. Our Maui steak was extra sweet, thin, and full of fat. The environment was noisy and we were way too overdressed for the casual Saturday shorts and t-shirts crowd. We won't be back. It was disappointing. read more

J Alexanders is always fabulous. I need to go hear more often and get different things. I am typically stuck on the salmon and chicken tenders. My last review was 18 years ago, wow. A lot has changed. I've grown to like this place for a simple lunch of steak frites. Their prices which once seemed unreasonable for the level of food they served now seem more in line with the inflated prices everywhere. I don't know if J. Alexander's improved or my expectations of eating out have declined. I admit I stick only to lunch, which is a simple menu and the place usually isn't busy so we get great attention by service. Another bonus, they have fresh brewed, really good coffee. Do you realize how many mid-high end restaurants have switched to instant coffee? Come on. They have a great offering for the lunch menu on the weekends. The fried cod is always exceptional. I get the steak and fries. I also tried the pomegranate martini and it was really good. We ended up getting the carrot cake for dessert and it was to die for. I would see this location a lot and decided to make a reservation. I was excited coming in, but slightly disappointed leaving. When entering, it looks very nice. The lighting is somewhat dark and there are candles on the tables which sets the mood for your dining experience which I liked. Once we began ordering, I informed our server that I had food allergies and he stated that they would need to clean the grill to make sure nothing was being cross contaminated which I appreciated. We then waited for upwards of 20 minutes after our appetizer had arrived. It was a busy night which I understand, but this was the first time it had taken a good amount of time after the appetizer came out in my years of eating at restaurants. The appetizer (side item) was the Not Your Ordinary Mac and Cheese. It had great flavor, hot, and cheesy. I definitely enjoyed this a lot. I ordered the Steak 'N' Fries as the entree. I would think that since it took a good amount of time that my food would come out hot. Unfortunately, it was lukewarm. The steak was juicy and had good flavors, but since it wasn't more towards the hot side, it didn't quite hit that 4 star mark for me. The fries were crunchy, salty, and the portion size is great, but just like the steak, it was lukewarm. The service is good. I appreciated the server taking my allergies seriously and making sure everything was done right. Overall, my experience here was okay. I believe that if the food had came out hot, it would've definitely reached that 4 star mark for me. I will return and see if my next experience is different, but I recommend you come here for a nice dinner night. read more

Came here mid-week for lunch with two others. We were seated in a booth in the back which made conversation easy. You couldn't hear others talking either. I was tempted to order the Thai Kai chicken salad since the reviews were so great. At the last minute I opted for the Asian ahi tuna salad since I had chicken for dinner the night before. The tuna was fresh and I liked the presentation with the salad on the side. Salad had a lot of dressing but was tasty. I wanted to eat light but it had some crunchy fried strip things in the salad that were not listed in the list of ingredients on the menu. If so, I would have asked for the salad without them. They were hard to pick out. Next time- would get the Thai Kai chicken salad. One person got the rattlesnake pasta and another the cilantro shrimp. Both loved their dish and finished them. Portions were generous in all three dishes. We were told ahead of time to get the carrot cake. WOW! Game changing. It was warm, the icing was perfect. I am forever ruined for carrot cake. Funny because this place has been there forever, and just getting around to trying it. High end steak/seafood place with dark, rich interior. If you walk in from the sun, you feel like you have been transported to another place. Kept it simple with the chicken that had a wonderful coating on the skin with just the right flavor, you could tell some thought went into this. Growing up, my family and I would dine at J. Alexander's for any special occasion or celebration. To find one here in KC made me excited but also anxious, fearing that this location may not live up to my sweet childhood memories. Nonetheless, my husband and I decided to have a spontaneous lunch date and stopped by on a Monday afternoon. We were so surprised to see the restaurant as busy as it was (which is good for the restaurant). We didn't think to make a reservation and were told there was a 30 minute wait. Thankfully, the wait was only 10 minutes. Even though it was hectic, the service was prompt, our food came out fast, and we were in and out within an hour. I really wanted to get all of the dishes I remember being my family's favorites, but I refrained for time being and ordered three dishes to share: Mr. Jack's Crispy Chicken Platter, Rattlesnake Pasta, and a side of Orzo & Wild Rice. How can something taste the exact same as I remember it 10+ years ago?? All three dishes were delectable, and my husband, who didn't have a choice in what we ordered (lol), enjoyed everything as well. Mr. Jack's Crispy Chicken Platter - generously breaded and fried chicken strips with a side of skinny fries, cole slaw to balance the meal, and two dipping sauces. Rattlesnake Pasta - rich and creamy pasta with a kick. Can confirm there is no rattlesnake in this dish. Just nicely seasoned bell peppers and chicken. Orzo & Wild Rice - refreshing combination of the two rices with some chopped up vegetables, dried currants, almonds, and a champagne vinaigrette. I am impressed and pleasantly surprised. We grabbed lunch at J Alexander's on a weekday. We had great service. We ordered a bottle of bubbles to celebrate a friend's doctorate. I got a burger and it was delicious! I'd order it again in a heartbeat. We also shared a key lime pie, which was also very good. All around solid meal. read more
