I was across the street on a Friday and saw this place. Instantly, I wanted fish! The place is nice and clean, but there is NO seating whatsoever. They sell fresh fish and it looked really nice, but there was not a hint of a fishy smell in the restaurant. My fish and chips were perfection! Not too salty but seasoned just right. If it's in the hood, you know it's good! I'd been searching for a "you buy... we fry" old school "no frills" fish market near my house. I found this place and my wishes were granted! It was so good, I went there three times this week. Yes, you read that right. I wanted to try everything. The must haves are the red snapper, fried oysters and fried jumbo shrimp. The runner ups are the catfish, the filet of sole and fried medium shrimp. Crispy golden batter to die for. The tartar sauce is amazing and has a kick. Mix it with the hot sauce for a different flavor. They have collard greens, fries, hush puppies and salad for the sides. All good but I wish they had rice. For desert they have sweet potato pie and cobbler. Wash it all down with a strawberry Fanta, Shasta Tiki Punch or a Cactus Cooler for the win. This place is a real find! The environment is pretty straight forward. You walk up to the counter, order and take a number. It's to go only. Rock bottom cheap prices. Nice Korean gentleman runs it with his hardworking staff. I'm going to try and make this as short as possible. I review food all the time and I heard this place was pretty good and I saw the reviews. I ordered the medium fried shrimp and I was totally disappointed 1) Shrimps were extremely fried hard to the point they were no longer medium but miniature 2) They taste like they were fried in chicken grease (btw, they do cook chicken there) 3) They were not seasoned and very cold Long story short I called to complain because I took this order to go and they had an attitude. I was not going to all the way back there for a refund, but after that phone call, I had to go back and get my $16 dollars and change. The owner was in denial. I would never go back there again !! The tilapia and shrimp is very good! However the catfish has a very fishy taste. The red snapper is sometimes tough, and the sandab is cut in half and sometimes it appears that there's a small pinkish strip that's close to the cavity. There is a barrier/divider where you have to bend down and make your order. And the owner isn't friendly but the workers are nice. And the wait time is reasonable. read more

I ordered fish and fries, but both came out very dark and tasted like they were cooked in old grease. I asked the owner if everything was fresh, and he assured me it was. When I called to express my concern, he was extremely rude and dismissive. Instead of offering a real solution, he told me to bring the food back--even after I explained that I live in another county. Great service, great food! J's Fish is my one and only fish spot. The only thing the could improve is offer cocktail sauce with shrimp.

I have a usual fish spot, but J fish definitely comes a close second. The quality is good and their seasoning is top notch. Better to call in as it could take extra long to get your order. A friend recommended this place to me and he said he never tried a "you buy, we fry" type of restaurant. It is located in a strip mall between a barber shop and another store. I went at night and it's very dark in the parking lot. I was greeted by a friendly and helpful gentleman. The menu is pretty straight forward and they have different side dishes (e.g., fresh fries, collard greens, hush puppies, potato salad and macaroni salad) and the combinations come with a roll. I ordered a side of 4 Jumbo Shrimp on the side. The first thing is the batter or coating on the fish and shrimp was very flavorful and crunchy. The fish and shrimp were fresh and the shrimp was properly cleaned. The hush puppies were fresh and did not taste like frozen ones I've had at other restaurants. The potato salad was fresh and tasty and I asked for a side of pickles, hot sauce, ketchup and tartar sauce. The whole dinner was so delicious and reasonably priced. I will definitely come back and look forward to trying out the greens and macaroni salad. Don't let the outside or surrounding neighborhood fool you. Can't believe I've never reviewed this place! I have been coming here for sometime now, and typically it's pretty good. For a shrimp and fish combo with fries it's about $14.00. The shrimp could stand to be a little bigger but still pretty filling. The star for me is the tartar sauce it's soooooo good, I was a little disappointed this trip they didn't put any in the bag. The food is always fresh so it does take some time to prepare, If you can always call ahead or be prepared for a wait. Went there for the first time at around 1130 am . I believe in getting or buying seafood in the early part of the day. I ordered a Family meal letter B because it has a jar of oysters. I picked a combo Sole and catfish per his recommendation . No tilapia for me. Waited outside until it was almost ready. Took it home and had it for lunch . The oysters taste fresh enough. The shrimp was not overcook, the fish were soft too. I like their tartar sauce but mixed some ketchup to have something abit sweet. Tried Bates before this, and that was quite underwhelming, so I was a bit skeptical going in since this one has fewer reviews, but I gotta say, I was pleasantly surprised. I had the 3pc fish (catfish) + 7 medium shrimp and fries for just over $10. The wait wasn't too long either at ~8 minutes (compared to 20 minutes at Bates). Either way, probably best if you call ahead of time. The fish was very good, as was the shrimp. Both were flavorful and I was able to appreciate the ingredients more than Bates. The guy behind the counter was SUPER friendly and recommended me the catfish or the sole. I'll try the sole next time. J Fish gives steak fries unlike Bates's crinkle cut fries, and these were great and well seasoned. The star of the meal here, as the other reviews say, is definitely the in-house tartar sauce which takes the meal to another level. It's slightly different from regular tartar sauce in that it's a bit...peppery? Either way, the seafood and the fries taste amazing dipped in here. Given that J Fish is closer to my house, cheaper AND tastier than Bates, I'll be coming here again for sure. Oh and the inside doesn't smell like you're sniffing Aquaman's thong at point blank, so that's a plus too. read more
