This is such a cute gift shop with variety of things to get that you would think to get from Japan. It's a very clean gift shop with really friendly staffs. Some of the things are a little bit over priced but you normally would not find that stuff that they carry at other stores. For obvious reasons, you usually have to have enough population of specific ethnicity before you can form a "plaza" full of stores. J Avenue is one of many shops in this adorable Japanese plaza. Whenever I'm down Columbus' way, it's become a must visit because I can do a meal, grocery, deserts/pastries and goods shopping all at once. J Avenue falls into the novelty goods shopping criterion. What I like about JA is that it's a shop that offers little bit of everything that you'd normally get from other Japanese themed shops. You have your mall-based Anime shops naturally focusing on Anime goods that are currently popular. Some big cities have other big name chains like Daiso, which is basically a Dollar store for Japanese household items. JA is a mix between all of them. They have sections of everyday household goods like mugs, chopsticks, shampoos, aprons, etc. But they also have sections with Anime related things but more "classics" like Sanrio or Studio Ghibli things. They also have cute stationeries. Of course they also have random novelty goods that represent Japanese culture in general. Store clerks are mostly Japanese, whom speak English well and very kind. You'll feel welcomed in every which way. My 14 year old daughter's eyes light up whenevet we're here, which reminds me of my time spent in Korea as a youth, having many, many choices of these novelty shops. Other cities in Ohio simply don't have the demands for things like these, but am super happy I found this place and able to share the same joy with my daughter. read more

This is another fun spot in the Tensuke Market area. The name doesn't really tell you what's inside, but you walk by a window display of super cute plush animals that pulls you inside for more. Inside is very clean and the staff is very welcoming. The store is well organized based on the different types of items they offer. Bring your credit card because they offer tons of super fun and unique things that you probably won't be able to find elsewhere. I think the prices are fair for what's offered. read more

This is a gift shop where I can't figure out what many of the items are, but yet want to buy everything anyhow. I know...I am confused by it too. The cuteness (and weirdness) factor is high here. If you need a knit strawberry cap for your cat, they have those. If you need jewelry dishes shaped like mushrooms, they have those. If you need Pokemon coffee mugs, they have those. I had recently discovered this location and was so excited to check it out. Upon arrival I struggled to find any tote bags aside from the ones on display, I saw under a table they had some packed to look through. Excited, I started flipping through all of the bags, granted I was very aware to keep it as neat as I found it. A worker with glasses and short brown hair came up to me to let me know those were their extra storage for things on the floor already. I let her know I couldn't find those totes anywhere and just blamed my lack of knowledge on it being my first time visiting and how excited I was. She seemed to not care in the slightest and was very rude. This store is clean, spacious, and well-stocked. It was a Wednesday around 6:00 pm and I was amazed at how many people were shopping there. It's obvious this is a popular place. There's so much variety. I loved the gift cloths. There was an adorable zippered pouch with fried eggs printed on it I know my son would love. In fact, he was with me, but we are minimalists so we took a pass, especially since it was $17.00 The egg printed pouch is just one example to show that their items are pricey. Really cute little shop! I honestly assumed it was a home decor type of store, but they've got all sorts of things in here! We didn't buy anything, but it seems like a lot of people walk in here out of curiosity as well. Still, they seem to be making business. Decor, toys, gifts, kitchen supplies, pottery, health and beauty supplies- all kinds of things. I got a stuffed animal for Baby K. and a Type 2 VW keychain for Sweetie (not exactly Japanese, but so what?) Service was great. I stumbled upon this gem of a store while exiting Belle's Bakery. This adorable store is very organized with cute trinkets in the front, stationary and miscellaneous items on the side, and beauty and cooking products towards the back. Most of the items here are pretty pricey but you can find some affordable things if you look hard enough. I ended up buying a small trinket that was significantly cheaper than what Amazon was selling it for. The staff here are super polite. The cashier thanked me multiple times just for giving her the item I wanted to purchase and my credit card. She even handed my credit card back to me with two hands which I considered very courteous. This is literally one of my favorite places in Central Columbus. You get a little taste of Japanese culture, when you walk into this beautiful little gift shop. They usually have something different every time I walk in, so it's always something new! I can't help but buy something here every time I go! I absolutely adore this store. This store is a gift to Columbus, OH, and J Avenue makes the Kenny Centre Mall even more special. The store itself is not that big, but I can definitely spend an hour or more here. I love how it is organized. There are so many trinkets and fun stuff you can find as well. I've brought dishes, cute tupperware, utensils, toothbrushes, an essential oil diffuser, cards, etc. I've definitely given a lot of money to this store, and they have in return, given me high quality items that LAST here. I have never gone home and been disappointed in the products. The service is impeccable. Definitely be careful in here as many of the items they have on display are fragile and very delicate. I can't believe it took me over two years to finally come inside this store, especially considering that I frequent Tensuke on almost a weekly basis. To think that I *didn't* need to be buying facemasks and eyeliner in bulk from Asian online... Coming from SF and LA, I'm very much not accustomed to walking down the street and NOT seeing at least 2-3 Asian beauty stores. Online shopping made this dearth more bearable, but then you have to worry about storing your products so that they don't dry out or go bad before you get to use them. The selection of beauty products is pretty good (I recognized the majority of their brands), but they have a bunch of other cute items as well (plushies, adorable kitchen utensils, etc.) The only downside is that a lot of things will be 1.5x the price you'll find in California, but I guess that's to be expected in Ohio. And it really does add a level of convenience because I can just get what I need whenever I want rather than having to time my purchases based on when I can get free shipping. read more

The store is so cute, the staff is nice, quality products... but they are really expensive. I've been a longtime Sanrio fan and recent Studio Ghibli fan. Since I've been ordering Sanrio via eBay for years or buying from local Japanese and Asian supermarkets, I felt like their prices were pretty steep. They also have a ton of Hello Kitty but no other characters (I'm a Chococat fan), I used to shop at Momo II off of Ackerman, they had everything Sanrio! Man I miss that store. Well anyways, it's worth a visit because there's a Japanese supermarket, bakery and restaurant all in the same plaza. But save your money at the gift shop, my daughter wanted a 4x6 Hello Kitty journal, it was $13! I know I can find the same thing online for about $5. Tucked in the back of Japan Market Place in Kenny Center is a little Japanese gift shop. Most people would never know it's there and might never stop in since it's hard to tell what it is from the sidewalk. Step inside however, and you're transported abroad to a land of cutesy stationary and plush cat collectibles. In case you weren't sure, cutesy stationary and plush collectibles are exactly my market. I knew immediately that a decent chunk of money and time were about to be spent here. J Avenue is clearly Japanese owned, and most of their items are imported. For that reason, you'll find a lot of their labeling is in Japanese, but don't be deterred. It's easy to see that all the items here are really good quality. It's not a very large store, but for the small size they do carry a LOT of variety. I found branded collectibles such as Totoro and Hello Kitty, tons of stationary including stickers, notebooks, pens, school supplies, along with kitchen items, beautifully decorated ceramic wear as well as Japanese makeup and body care. I found the store attendants to be extremely friendly and helpful, they walked around providing baskets to shoppers and were really helpful if you needed help finding something. I walked away from this store with a little spring in my step, J Avenue is a store full of items that are perfect whether you're purchasing a gift for a friend, or just need a little pick-me-up. I think if you appreciate small gift items or Japanese crafted items, you'll really enjoy stopping in here, and I would definitely recommend a visit while you're checking out Japan Market Place. read more

Appearances can be deceptive. I only wish I had ventured into this store earlier! My friends and always stop by this Japanese center whenever we are in Columbus (or near Columbus, for that matter). We are seriously deprived Asians living in Cincinnati. Yet we've always made a beeline for Tensuke Market and Belle's Bread, without giving two glances to this newly opened Japanese store. I think part of the reason I never bothered walking in is because I assumed everything would be super kawaii (it is!) and super kaching-kaching beyond my means (it's not!). Surprisingly, I found quite a few affordable gifts (e.g. tea set for under $30). I ended up buying my friend's birthday present here and some cute Japanese dog stationery that was just begging for me to buy it. When I checked out, I asked if this store was a chain and was bummed to learn that I would have to drag my butt up to Columbus if I ever wanted to get such wonderfully cute and affordable stuff. I love this place! It's definitely a lot more organized than the previous store Hana Gifts. It's a lot less cluttered, very neat, and clean looking. I'm glad they offer a little bit of everything - from home goods to kitchen supplies to beauty/skincare/haircare, makeup, etc. I can't find this exfoliator called Cure Aqua Gel anywhere else in Columbus except here. I was about to order it online when I stumbled upon it at the store. They also carry Bio Derma which is not often. J Avenue replaces the old Hana Gifts and brings a breath of fresh air to the Kenny Centre. Although the old Hana Gifts had some things going for it (vast supply of Japanese trinkets, book, magazines, anime, manga, dinnerware, school supplies, toys, shirts) there were many weaknesses. The store felt crowded and confused. The aisles were narrow and squeezing by other shoppers became annoying. The massive amount of items in the store was overwhelming and contributed to its unkemptness. Store appearance and organization never seemed to be given much thought. On the other hand, the new J Avenue is fantastically fresh and tidy. The roomy layout gives customers a comfortable shopping experience even when crowded. Items are displayed beautifully with prices marked clearly (a common problem with Hana Gifts.) The extra attention to design has helped the stores visual appeal and even given it a strong brand identity. Although J Avenue doesn't offer a gigantic array of items like Hana Gifts, it's likely for the best. A store with thousands of items simply can't be maintained to provide a great shopping experience. The most important and relevant items are still offered at J Avenue in addition to some great new ones. I highly recommend stopping by if you're in the area. J Avenue has created a unique shopping experience unlike anything I've seen in Ohio. read more

I discovered this little shop while looking for some place in Columbus that sold Japanese incense. Recently, I've noticed that my usual blue box Nag Champa seemed weaker. So after browsing the Olfactory Rescue Service site https://olfactoryrescueservice.wordpress.com/ I wanted to try something new. The shop seems almost hidden, but once inside, you're in for a treat. The atmosphere is airy, clean, modern, and whimsical. I was mainly interested in incense, but i noticed there were a lot of beauty products and various toys and other odds and ends. I was hoping for more sampler type boxes, but there was only one on the day I visited. Oh well. I chose a few boxes of Morningstar by Nippon Kodo (50 sticks for $2.50) and a few boxes of Shoyeido (30 sticks for $3.95) and each box contained a little holder. If you haven't tried Japanese incense, give it a shot. I just wish more stores would carry them. read more

Its an atrocity. The previous store Hana Gifts was a little piece of Japan in america, it was organized like a small japanese bookstore and had plenty to offer! J-Avenue no longer has DVD's, Books, Textbooks, Magazines, Wall Scrolls, that neat kimono that was always there, any of the stationary or what have you. It's all hipster crap now, mostly body products and novelty items. The store is really spaced out too, it feels smaller and it looks like they have nothing when you first walk in. I am really upset too, this was where I always came to buy my japanese books and DVD's, and now no where in Columbus has them. Overall, BAD. read more

Holy wow this store is amazing. I used to frequent here back when it was Hana Gifts, and while they no longer carry anime/manga/books, J Avenue is such a massive improvement. Not only do they have the cutest items ever (like tea sets, office supplies, and plush toys galore), but what really makes this place special is the huge abundance of imported Japanese makeup/skincare/beauty products (like Hada Labo, Tsubaki, Ichikami, etc). Also there's an entire table of already opened products for you to sample/try out! How amazing is that? This place is small and cute, and was a nice place to go to when it was drearily drizzling outside. I came looking for Asian beauty goods, which they certainly had! My only qualm were the marked up prices (Heroine Make eyeliner and mascara were nearly $20 each) and it was a little hard to sort through the goods that they had since there weren't many translations; they had an info sheet with photos of items to look for for specific needs, but not much help beyond that. Granted, I could have asked someone for help, but they looked a little intimidating. There definitely is a nice sampling area though - I got to try some of the makeup, and there were also samples of hair products. Dinnerware selection is also good, and they also carry some cute character items as well. It's definitely a good place in the area, though they could certainly work on helping people in their beauty section (more translations at least, please!) read more
