6930 N. Greenview has been a real nightmare. Currently I've been dealing with bed bugs on my 6th floor apartment, so there's that. This is the second time I've had them. Had them since December of 2023 and the crap company that J & J has some sort of blue light special deal with to get rid of them is completely useless. Yes, I'm talking about you, Platinum Pest "Solutions." There's honestly too much negative here to write, but I'm not going to mince words here; this company is absolutely terrible, and the building manager is an incompetent charlatan who even the internet service providers that hook up internet in the building don't want to deal with. I've witnessed the building manager chew out a RCN guy because he was in the building. Um, hello, he's in the building for a reason. Maybe focus more on getting the people out of the building that are stealing packages for the last 7 years, or the guy who sexually assaulted one of your tenants in the laundry room. Think I'm joking, here's the link to the story: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RO1L0UUjh8U Management sent out a incredibly disingenuous email after this event, saying that someone was "confronted" in the laundry room and that we shouldn't let people walk in behind them when entering the building. As for the bed bugs, a blind man who lived a few doors down from me had a bad infestation, to the point that the guys who were delivering him a new mattress refused to deliver it and refused to take the old one. Who knows if the problem was actually fixed, but almost immediately after this guy left they had a new tenant in his old apartment. I let her know that the previous tenant had a bed bug infestations and she should watch out for them, because you know for certain J & J didn't tell her anything about it. And then of course, a few months later I get bed bugs. Sure, they sent out a pest company but they are completely disinterested and some literally spend 45 seconds in my apartment and leave. It's honestly a joke. So, after dealing with Bed bugs since a few days before Christmas, one of the zombies from their "office" emails me a renewal letter congratulating me on the offer to renew my lease. WHILE I have bed bugs they raise my rent 100 dollars a month. You just can't even make this crap up. Then when I tell them no, of course I don't want to stay, they ask me when I'm moving out. Well when do you think I'm moving out, brainiac. When my lease is up. So then they tell me I can move out early. It's February, my lease goes until the end of May. So they just want me to pick up and move, with bed bugs, into a new apartment somewhere else. How dumb can be people be, honestly? The elevators break down often. Many people have yapping dogs that never shut up. When I first moved in here, no pets were allowed. Now they are everywhere, barking all the time. My first apartment was on the top floor, I was forced to move within 6 months because a pipe busted and water was streaming down the walls. My things were going to be ruined unless I moved immediately. So then I had to move to the 6th floor, right next to the loud, door banging elevator. Yes, I stayed here for a number of years, not because it's a good place, obviously, but because I was laid off during covid. Stolen packages happen literally every week. There is a homeless woman in the area who does it, her name is Linda. She pries the door open, or follows tenants into the building. She opens the packages, takes what she wants, and leaves the boxes. The cops know about it, they don't care. The management cares not at all. That's probably the one thing that that has been the most infuriating in this building. That and the turning off of water many, many days for basically the whole day. They do this crap all the time. They claim they are making plumbing improvements, so they have to shut it off all day. Have to take a dump? It's going to sit in your toilet all day. They don't care. The front door gets stuck often and doesn't lock. They don't care. Anybody and their grandma can come into this building when the lock is stuck. They said "it's because of the cold." So you have a lock on the door that gets stuck because of the cold and you can't replace it with a better lock? You're a million dollar plus company. It's just laziness and apathy. They do the bare minimum on most things. They are good about fixing broken crap in the apartment. By some Festivus miracle, many of the maintenance men are cool and actually show empathy. Prepare to hear stomping above you from humans as well as yapping dogs and the noisy elevator. Constantly. The mechanical nature of the elevator is noisy, but it's the slamming metal spring loaded doors that slam shut a hundred times a day that messes with your mind the most. On that note, if you value your mental health, do not move into this building. For what you have to deal with and the tiny kitchens and bathrooms, it's just not worth it. They only want your money.

There was vandalism done to my apartment door by a fellow tenant, who I had shared concerns about prior to the day when my apartment door was vandalized. I even called the police as the tenant was yelling and broke other furniture in the hallway. When informing my building manager and sharing a photo that same day, I did not receive a response that showed concern for my safety. When a tenant vandalizes another tenant's door and multiple residents have to call the police, there was no urgency or assurance from management that safety was their priority. I even told my building manager that I didn't feel safe (had to carry pepper spray in the building and stayed elsewhere to protect myself), and he literally showed no concern. Of course I requested to end my lease early, but the building manager showed a lack of professionalism in his communication and knowing that I wanted to end my lease early to protect myself. How are tenants supposed to continue business by renting with J&J Equities if building managers do not act professionally and lack concern for tenant safety?

Elevators are frequently out of service, which becomes more than an inconvenience in a multi-floor property. There have been extended periods without hot water -- at one point lasting nearly a week -- with limited communication or clear timelines for resolution. Access control has also been unreliable. Key fobs have malfunctioned at entry points, locking residents out despite active credentials. Plumbing issues have been another recurring problem, adding to the overall sense that preventative maintenance is not a priority. What's most frustrating isn't just the issues themselves -- things break in any building -- it's the pattern. The problems feel reactive rather than proactively managed, and communication from management does little to inspire confidence. Residents deserve consistent access, functioning utilities, and transparent updates when things go wrong. Unfortunately, that has not been the experience here.

Instead of offering help or clarity, they seemed more concerned about the fact that we didn't go through our agent (despite it being a straightforward inquiry). We were spoken to in a condescending tone and made to feel like we'd done something wrong just by calling. It felt unnecessarily hostile and unwelcoming -- especially when we were potential renters just trying to understand the process. No one deserves to be treated like an inconvenience for asking basic questions. Communication and respect should be the baseline for any leasing office. Unfortunately, that wasn't our experience here. Then, days later, we were pestered about submitting additional documents that were never listed or prompted by the application system. We later found out that ICM was "extremely irritated" we hadn't submitted those extra documents--even though they were never requested in the first place. Some of these were sensitive files (like pay stubs with full SSNs), and we were understandably not comfortable emailing them. I called the phone number listed in the confirmation email--which explicitly said to reach out with questions--hoping to ask about a more secure way to submit our documents. The woman who answered was shockingly rude and acted like I was bothering her just by calling. When I asked for any alternatives, she gave a flat "No." The only option she offered was to physically mail the documents--which is just as insecure as emailing them. Even worse, these documents weren't even being sent to ICM directly, but to The Apartment Guys, adding another layer of concern about security and privacy. Despite the email saying to contact them with questions, the woman told me I couldn't even speak to ICM until we were approved. Completely unprofessional. Disorganized. Rude. The customer service is nonexistent, and the process makes no sense. Stay far away.

Home. That's the one word to describe my experience at 519 W Melrose Street…read more My now wife and I signed our lease in July 2020 as some of the first tenants from when SRE converted this building from condos into rental units. We originally did our tour and it checked all our boxes: a private balcony, central heat/AC (which is all electric), modern appliances, in-unit washer/dryer, a private parking garage for our car, and close to all the action and the CTA. We loved the apartment, so we went through the leasing process. The signing was straightforward and easy using Docusign. From there, we got the keys and started moving in. Immediately after move-in, the SRE Management team did some fantastic upgrades to ensure 519 W Melrose is a place to call home. Originally, we got Xfinity internet, but received an email saying we will now have Google Fiber internet included in rent! So we used this new internet for the remainder of our time here. The internet worked great and was fast (500 mbps up/down), with minor hiccups during heavy rain and storms. Soon after that, the management team upgraded the call box and building keys to be fobs, which allowed easier entry into the complex. Additionally, they redid the entire carpeting of the hallways, which made the complex look much nicer. These upgrades showed that management truly cares about the building and their tenants. In our five years of living there, we only had about three or four maintenance requests for minor items. For each request, the maintenance team responded immediately and they were always out the next morning to fix the issues. The maintenance team was always super friendly and I enjoyed seeing them - huge shoutout to Amanda for running the requests, and Christian, Neil, and the rest of the amazing maintenance team for being great to work with and talk to. For the five years living there, SRE never raised rent an unreasonable amount - each year it did increase nominally, but moved according to the market rate. We were blessed to find an affordable apartment that checked all of our boxes. Our neighbors were okay - some seem to care about others, some seem to just be annoyed with everything or don't take care of things. Typical for a big city complex. We didn't make much of an effort to meet anyone in our building; however, with the encounters in the public spaces, everyone seemed friendly. Given that the building does not have concrete separating units, occasionally, you could hear your neighbors through the walls/floors. It was never an issue though, even when some of the neighbors are louder at times. Again, just something you get used to living in a large city, and nothing against the complex overall. I've lived in many different apartments and houses over the years, and this apartment was the only place I have had the feeling of "home" since living with my parents as a kid. It is incredibly bittersweet to leave our home at 519 W Melrose, but we started to outgrow our little apartment, as our small family is now growing. If you are reading this review to see if you should sign here, do not hesitate. 519 W Melrose has been the best place I've lived, and SRE has been the best management and maintenance team I have ever rented from.
