Basically, the bed was comfortable, but everything else sucked. Like, it smelled like old damp carpet mixed with powder (weird). It was like a gingerbread house with Norman bates on the other side of the wall. Or sleeping on a cloud in a river of puke. I think I'm going to try to stop describing this place now. And I think if I didn't pay about $80 for one night here I wouldn't be so disturbed. So, I wouldn't recommend this place overall. Yes, I did sleep well. Which, can be priceless sometimes. But I'm going to credit exhaustion for that. Not necessarily comfort. If they just made a few updates, like add curtains that close all the way, new cheap carpet that doesn't feel moist, fill in the holes in the bathroom wall, etc, come on. There's no excuse for the holes. Chew some gum and stick it in there if need be.

The house has been redone and the decor inside is new and contemporary but still fits with the period of the older home. Rooms are beautiful, clean and well-kept and there was a Roku on the tv with wifi. The back door has a keypad lock so you can come and go as you please with ease and there was a welcome package with snacks, jam, and a handwritten welcome note. Location is great because, with ample parking in the back of the home, you can walk around the town to antique, explore and eat at one of a dozen or more restaurants. They don't do the traditional breakfast but had a small bar well-stocked with coffee, tea, bananas, fresh pastries, and juice and water. Enough for me! Usually I kind'a wanna go out and explore on my own anyway and the town has several nice places for brunch (Spoon and Spindle was my fav). Pat was great and communicative through email/text but wasn't hovering in the way some B&B owners are. There to greet me but then left me alone to enjoy the stay but was available for questions if I had any.... perfect! Would absolutely come back any time.

Pat and Monica were excellent hosts. Every room was well decorated, well maintained, and clean. The common areas are beautiful and, once again, well maintained. Every morning the Keurig coffee maker was filled with water and ready, with cups, along with bottled water. Pat or Monica would check in periodically and were very responsive the few times we needed them. Finally, the Holladay House is located in downtown Orange. There are excellent restaurants and bars within walking distance. If you are staying in Orange, or close by, we highly recommend staying at the Holladay House.

If you have never stayed at a Microtel, it is the most accurately named hotel chain. Micro-spaced rooms. TV's are perched atop the closet at an angle for viewing in bed. Having said that, the bed was comfortable, the room was clean, and everything worked well. Breakfast is cereal and pastries. Front desk personnel, while friendly, looked more like a housekeeper that was working the front desk. Summation: nice stay, just understand you are staying in an economy chain.

I have usually always gone to PA for local skiing but wanted to try something new and after researching VA and NC skiing I chose Wintergreen because it seemed perfect. My reservationist was very nice. She answered all my questions and told me what would be the best deal for us...a 2 bedroom condo, slope-side with access, and 4 2-day lift tickets. I inquired in depth about the conditions and decor of the accommodations. Maybe ridiculous but I insist on feeling good about where I am sleeping, showering, and eating when spending good money. She assured me that although they were individually owned, the resort had standards that must be met and they were nice. The pictures of the condo on the website showed granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, nice decor, and updated bathrooms. I felt good after our conversation. Our check-in was great. Easy, friendly, helpful. After driving to the furthest condo from the lodge, walking down many flights of stairs with our things, my son and I walked into a very tacky condo from the 1980's. 1st letdown. It was very clean but I couldn't help feeling very mislead and I find that bad business. I was gotten there under false pretenses. Seriously, if I would have known that appliances were 25 years old; the fully loaded kitchen was not and what it did have was bottom of the line EVERYTHING!!!; that the furniture (except the couches) were dated, the tv's small, very old, and fuzzy even with cable; the archaic jacuzzi was mauve with very deep green tile around it (I cannot even name a time when the fixtures might have been in style.); and that the bed was lumpy and the comforter smelled, I would have NEVER booked this stay. After looking around the accommodations, I opened the curtains to look at the slopeside w/ access view. 2nd letdown. The slopes had white man made snow (which I was fully aware of because we've had NO snow), however, a large area around the condo building was grass. I realized that this might be my fault. She told me that I could access the slopes right from our condo because we were "literally right next to the slopes" and could "ski in and out of the condo's" but I didn't consider what would happen if it never snowed. So, what now? I read the info provided and called to schedule my sons private lesson and make dinner reservations for the next night but had to leave messages for both. My son and I unpacked and left to explore. Not thrilled that we really weren't in walking distance of the lodge even though I was told it was 'right there'. I went to the desk to inquire about access to the slopes since we obviously could not "ski in/out" from the condo. One of the desk staff, after telling me its slope view NOT access, got a supervisor who told me they don't tell people it's ski in/out. Huge 3rd letdown. I find almost nothing more unacceptable than someone telling me I'm lying. After I explained that I was absolutely told that, she quit looking at me and very rudely said she'd remove a fee. I said that wasn't the point but she was no longer acknowledging me. (May I assure that I never raised my voice or used inappropriate language but I was not happy when I was told I didn't hear what I heard.) We went to rent our equipment from an unbelievably smelly rental room. Lugged it back to the car and then into the condo. Tried all night to get a good nights sleep but the bed was so uncomfortable. At 8am I started calling the ski school to get a 9am lesson but left another message. I could not find hours of operations anywhere and the message didn't provide. (I had previously been told that Monday's were slow days for them.) I had left my condo room # on the message but I missed a call on my cell 9:05. I called right back and after holding for 25 minutes, I hung up and called the front desk exasperated! They said someone would call me back. 5 minutes later, about 9:40 I got a return call and was matter-of-factly told the wasn't a lesson until 1pm. I was beside myself. She proceeded to tell me that yes, they usually were quiet on Monday's but not today. I was very unhappy. A few minutes later she said she could do a snowboard lesson at 11am. I was much happier. Peyton was great! My son liked him a lot and I ended up paying for 3 separate lessons (75 minutes each) which at this moment I realize I paid $279 for when the offer a 3 hour lesson for $199. Just one thing after another!!! I could keep going with negative and positive but unfortunately the negative are just way to many. The customer service in way to many situations was unacceptable.

This was my family's second time staying at Crabtree Falls Campground. The owner, AJ, is super…read morefriendly, responsive, and helpful in reserving by phone and email. We stayed at campsites 30, 31, and 32, which are at one end of the campground and feel more secluded, farther away from the other campsites. This means your car is not right next to your site, but we didn't mind walking back and forth (slightly uphill, along a path); we recently bought a collapsible utility wagon that was super helpful in carrying big things to and from the site. The sites sit higher above the river, so it's a bit steep if you want to go down and enjoy the water, but you can do so carefully and it's well worth it. You will love sitting by your fire, listening to the rushing river and feeling like you're in the middle of nowhere, even though many luxuries like flush toilets, hot showers, and even a camp store are just steps away. No need to bring ice or firewood; the camp provides them at an added reasonable cost (but bring an axe to help break up the logs in case the wood is damp or fresh). Bring a grill-top for the firepit if you plan to cook. Keep in mind that the campsites are not very large; ask AJ when you book if your tent will fit. There's plenty to do in the area: Hike Crabtree Falls, taste beers at Devil's Backbone or Blue Mountain Breweries, enjoy ciders at Bold Rock, and next time we'll try the distilleries. Crabtree Falls is definitely my favorite campground in all of Virginia!

We have only stayed during the fall since there is no A/C but I can tell you that during the cooler nights the base board heat keeps you very warm. The constant sound of the creek right outside your window is soothing and a great change from a busy life. There is absolutely NO cell service so be prepared for that. Some super sweet camp cats! The place itself smells musty- not a BAD or rotten smell but just old. There's a feeling of immense love and sadness in the house and it's imperative that you learn the rich history of the house to truly appreciate it. The inside of the palace is only only open to the public on certain days of the year and not all the rooms are open. I was very satisfied with what rooms were open.

While the Maymont Estate in Richmond is a much more expansive visitor experience today, this hidden gem, modeled after the Villa de Medici in Rome, is certainly worth a stop, either on one of their open house weekends ($6 fee) or just to see in person from the outside. The real belle of the ball is inside - the 4,000 piece Tiffany stained glass window of Mrs. Dooley, which is a backdrop to the grand central staircase and artistic domed ceiling. There are plenty of interesting fireplaces, doorways and tower views. You will certainly notice the musty presence of mold throughout the building with various walls and ceilings falling apart. The grounds include some terraced gardens and somewhat restricted views of the surrounding area. It is a shame the interior of the building is in such a state of disrepair and the property hasn't been kept up, as it could be an amazing special event space. Still, people apparently elect to have weddings there, even though there is no running water and everything would have to be brought in. There is a no trespassing sign on the front door, so the inside is only accessible on one of the special open house days. The grounds are easy to walk around and being on top of the mountain it has a nice temperature, at least 5-10 degrees below of Charlottesville. Visiting should certainly be a part of any UVA student's bucket list, much like watching the sunrise/sunset from the peak of the quick Humpback Rocks hike.

The front desk staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming from check-in to check-out. The lobby and sitting area are attractive, comfortable, and inviting. Our room was clean and comfortable. While it wasn't luxurious or overly fancy, it had everything we needed for a relaxing stay. One of the highlights was the complimentary breakfast. There was a great variety of options, including two types of scrambled eggs (plain and cheese with peppers), bacon, sausage, buttermilk biscuits, cereal, coffee, tea, and juice. Everything was well stocked and made for a great start to the day. The indoor pool was unfortunately under repair during our visit, but it looked like it will be a really nice amenity once the work is completed. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would definitely choose the English Inn again the next time we're in the Charlottesville area.
