We were talking about dinner options for the night, having left Red Rock NCA via the South. I didn't have any serious ideas, but chasing forever after that mythical midnight Saimin that United no longer serves, I half-heartedly suggested Zipy's. Always quick on the draw, the passenger princess pulled out the phone and found this shop.
The neighborhood was calm, even dead. Take the blindfold off and your victim would've thought he/she's amongst new developments in San Bernardino. But walk inside and every table was taken. The lone worker did his best and took our order for a large wonton min, crispy wonton, a green river, and a goodie freeze.
--------------------------------------------
Wonton Min - Saimin with wontons added.
- The noodles were typical, classic chewy texture and lacked the lye smell they Palace had. This shop also sells a dried noodle, masemin, and I can see it working very well.
- The broth was light, clean, and closer to the bone broth you'd get at a Cantonese restaurant. No hate, and if you know the history of Saimin, it makes sense, but not what I was looking for, which is the dashi-esque soup base
- The wontons were good. A thin wrapper with well seasoned filling, if a little heavy on the pepper. Hands down the best Hawaiian wontons I've had, beating Shige's and Palace on Oahu. Reason for my review.
- Green bokchoi, 2 pieces. Good green color, voluptuous, but grassy as always and the Krabby Pattie to mi Squidward - except he hasn't had it yet and I've had it all my life. Yuhk. No. Great for presentation. I ate it. It was well blanched. Nothing against the restaurant. I'd just rather eat broccoli, AND BROCK'S FAMILY!
- Chasiu, egg, spam were nothing special, but the Chasiu was chopped thick, as would typically be served outside Hawaii.
Crispy wonton - another victory over an Island Icon... The crispy gaugee at Shiro's was so salty, and this was much better filled.
Green River - That artificial shaved ice lime flavor was really nothing special, but I'm happy to have tried it. No carbonation, just syrup N water.
Goodie-Freeze - This homemade sorbet was a quite good dessert. Three words - Stawberry Flavored Melona.
The passenger princess wanted it.
The passenger princess got it.
The passenger princess enjoyed it.
I usually misspell the name of competitors, but I figure no one's going to pick one of the Oahu staples when they are on the Ninth Island.
OK, there's like a trillion of us in Asia alone, but Brock and I do share last names. I have nothing against Charlene or Viktor, but Bok is disgusting.
