We first discovered this food truck about 7 years ago and it's been a favorite ever since. The coconut shrimp is unforgettable--perfectly butterflied, coated in fresh shaved coconut, and fried to golden perfection. The service has that true aloha spirit--friendly, welcoming, and it feels like you're being invited into someone's home for a meal. We love supporting local businesses, and this one is a must-stop along the Road to Hana. The food here is cooked with love, and you can taste it in every bite. And the ambiance doesn't get any better if you love that local vibe and you're in Hāna. read more

Island Chef - Coconut Shrimp Plate - Seafood Near Me - Hana, Hawaii

If you're taking a road to Hāna, u might need a little food break. The Island Chef has got you covered. There's parking out in front, right next door is a little shops for souvenirs/gifts/jewelry and further down are some BBQ spots. Theres plenty of covered outdoor seating to take a break and stretch your legs. The island chef let us know everything is fresh and the fish for the fish n chips was marlin. Also recommended ordering the coconut shrimp which is butterflies then pounds out so you got some bigggg coconut shrimp. And finally mentioned we order the shrimp with tiger sauce instead of the garlic shrimp because the tiger sauce was his own creation of butter/garlic/sweet/heat. The fish had a light fry and the marlin was meaty. That tiger sauce OMG was finger licking good. Not too sweet and perfect for those juicy shrimp and plate of rice. Delicious! He even brought out some kalua pork for us to try. Tender and not overly saucy. Worth the stop! Cash only btw read more

The fish n chips here were SO freaking good. We stopped at the market along the Road to Hana looking for some bbq, but that spot was closed, so we decided to try Island Chef instead. Eric was really nice. The fish was super fresh- perfectly crispy and not too greasy. The lemons came from his garden. Picnic style seating. Highly recommend this place. read more

What looks like a small restaurant in the side of the road is actually an island paradise! The fish and chips and coconut shrimp were excellent! The person was very nice and offered us more sauce and napkins. I would definitely recommend this place to people driving the road to Hāna. Definitely worth the stop! Another recommendation: take a picture next to the big cardboard shrimp (it's cute). All in all, the place itself and the service was amazing! We loved coming here and we hope to come again sometime! read more

We loved it ! The menu is limited to Fish and Chips and Coconut Shrimp but, both are fantastic! Really great place to stop on The Road to Hana. Eric the owner was super nice and had our order up and ready fast. Lots of picnic table seating under roof next to the food truck. Limited parking in the lot but most people come and go ... we will be back next time we head to Hana. read more

Came here with my boyfriend on our road to Hana. The guy working was extremely rude. I ordered the fish and chips and he went next door to try another food truck. We decided to sit at the tables there since I had ordered food and the guy bullied us out of there. He wouldn't leave us alone just bashing on my boyfriend for ordering food from somewhere else. He was extremely pushy and wouldn't let it go after we tried laughing it off. Went so far as to come out to our table and continue bullying us. Would never ever return. Save your money and go somewhere else. Anywhere else. read more

Complete rip off. Unreasonably expensive. Takes advantage of tourists who don't know that 5 minutes down the road there is better food for half the price. Wait just a few minutes unless you're really desperate read more

This was a great find on our road to Hana. It's in Nahiku marketplace which is just before the Hana. Shrimp Chowmein was so good. Huge portions and very fresh shrimps. We loved the taste. It had great wok flavors. Ordered coconut shrimp too after tasting fresh shrimps in chowmein, however it was over battered and didn't taste so good. It's was more of a coconut bread taste than any prawns in it. But still overall food is very good here. Lady at the counter who apparently was chef too was very sweet. read more

This place should be called gentrification chef. I originally Came here in 2017 and the truck had local/native ownership and it was the best coconut shrimp I've ever tasted. I Came back June 2023 and the local/native owner was gone. The new (non local) owner ruined this spot. The coconut shrimp is not fresh. It is overly battered and hard. The fish is very possibly fish sticks. She wouldn't even sell just fries for someones kids. I even saw people throwing food away. I drove 2 hours to eat food from a local but was extremely dissatisfied in the change of ownership. Save your $25 for another spot to eat. read more

If you are ever traveling on the road to Hana in Maui, this is simply the best place to stop for a quick authentic fresh catch of the day island dish. Chef Eric will cook an amazing tasty dish each time. In our case we order the classic fish and chips and also coconut shrimp both with fries. The batter on both the shrimp and fish had a nice perfect crunch on the outside and fluffy inside which was the perfect combination with the fresh well seasoned fish and shrimp, nothing overcooked/fried or greasy...just perfect. The service was amazing and part of the experience, chef Eric will confirm catch of the day and cook it just the way you want it. Nice clean place with shade on hot days and if you are lucky you might see the ocasional house cat roaming for snacks and a friendly tourist cuttle. Would definitely go back and definitely recommend...cash only read more

My meal at Island Chef was the best fish and chips I had on the whole island. Absolutely unreal. This is an absolute must-stop for lunch while on the road to Hana. Our group had several orders of fish and chips as well as the fish tacos, and we ate it faster than anyone could take a picture! I'm assuming the people working were the owners, and their service was so charming and accommodating. The atmosphere is a nice place to stop and was very clean. read more

The only place we got fish n chips was here at Island Chef in Hana. I've had plenty of fish n chips coming from the Bay in California with SF right there, and also living in San Diego for a couple of years. I'd say the Bay does it well, but Island Chef with its low-key food truck setup and one-woman-star-power truly knocks the fish and chips out of the park! I can't believe one woman runs the entire joint doing cashier duties, cooking EVERYTHING on the menu, and providing a great space to take it easy in Hana. Seafood is pricey, and warm food is a bit more expensive in Hana compared to elsewhere in Maui...so we shared the Island combo platter which had the BEST coconut shrimp I've ever had, fish, fries, and a variety of dips for the fried goodies. It was the perfect amount for us two to split a lighter lunch. The coconut shrimp was unlike any other I've eaten before. The coconut strips were SO fresh and did not overpower the taste of the ginormous shrimp we had. We loved that there was sweet and sour dip, two spicy ones, and tartar. I forget which fish we had, but she always provides the "Catch of the day." We saw that other people had the thai plates or other rice and noodle plates. Great variety and family friendly! There's also a cute black cat that hangs around the area. We both thought it was a bit blind and a stray, but it hung around the Island Chef area like it lived here. Restrooms are behind the entire "strip" of eateries and other local small shops, but Island Chef has wet towelettes for your greasy hands. read more

This is my second time eating here. Since Covid they broke down the menu to literally only the two options in the photos which were coconut shrimp or fried fish (ono). The food was delicious as I remember but I'm sad they don't have any options besides those because they used to have delicious noodles. It's a little pricy thought. These plates were $25 each! read more

On our Road to Hana we stopped and ate here. Everything was made fresh in woks after you order, but came out fairly quickly. The portions of each meal were large and easily splittable. The coconut shrimp were huge! I got the Ahi (which is caught fresh daily) and it was seasoned with salt, pepper and black sesame seeds - sooo good! This plate came with rice and fresh veggies - gluten-free as-is! If you are needing gluten-free, they can accommodate you on almost every plate (except of course the breaded fish items) by leaving out the soy sauce! The ladies were very nice and we chatted a bit while they prepared our food. Lots of covered picnic tables to sit and eat at as well. Would definitely recommend! read more

I first experienced Island Chef's food earlier this year when exploring the road to Hana by myself. Only a few stands were open that day but I caught a view of someone's coconut shrimp meal and although a little pricey, I had to try it. It was the best coconut shrimp I've ever had. The shrimp were large, hot and freshly made with delicious and abundant coconut shavings. I returned again just this month and tried a different stand and am so sad that I did- the bland meal didn't even come close to the Island chef meal. I would be lying if I didn't say that I often dream and salivate over the thought of that coconut shrimp. read more

Best stop on the Road to Hana and best food I had the entire week in Hawaii (Oahu AND Maui included). A very welcoming place! The owner (or I assume he is) was very nice. It's a bit expensive but then again it's on the Road to Hana so it's to be expected a little. And you'd pay more in central Maui anyway. But for the price it's big pieces of fish, very fluffy and so delicious. The fish was delicate, thick and buttery. Probably pulled from the sea that day or that week (& frozen). Definitely bring your own snacks on the road to Hana, but for an actual good lil meal, we recommend this lil spot. read more

A pretty good food stop After a few hours on The Road To Hana we felt quite a bit hungry. The Nihiku Market Place was a good place to take a break, can't miss it when you pass it. There are a few food options here, this one being the busiest (on that day). There are lots of dishes on the menu. Mostly Asian (inspired) with shrimp, beef and chicken. We've had our share of Shrimp Plates already, so we went for a plate of Kung Pao Beef. Even though the cook not being Asian, the dish was pretty good and authentic. Beef was of good quality and the size of the dish fair for its price. Even though it was labeled as "spicy" I did indeed miss the fire. Really could use more chili. Besides that a good meal. If the place is busy, you better have some spare time. They cook all dishes by order and fresh - that's great, but takes time. But worth it. read more

Great place to stop on "The road to Hana" Fish was cooked perfectly and fries were amazing. Super cool dude running and cooking.

We stopped here yesterday on the RTH . Our plate consisted of 4, yes 4 over- battered , poop vein intact shrimp and 7.5 pale, frozen, crinkle cut French fries all for the price of $20. To accompany the shrimp and fry... I mean fries, we received a thimbles full of ketchup and the insinuation of shrimp sauce. I honestly don't believe I paid twenty bucks for it but here I am $20 poorer. read more
