I can confirm that I grew up hearing my Jamaican mother say most of the things on the wall of Jamaican sayings. In addition to the soul of the day, we got jerk chicken with rice and peas and steamed cabbage. The jerk was nicely flavored, not spicy. We requested a bottle of Scotch Bonnet pepper sauce to add heat. We also ordered saltfish with green banana and boiled root vegetables. Everything was delicious. Leftovers from the second meal reheated nicely the next day for breakfast (Just remember to cut up the banana, yam, and dumpling before you refrigerate it.). The atmosphere in Mama Claire's was friendly. We were sat next to a couple who appeared to be regulars and chatted nicely with the staff and us. The lady working front of house even remembered us when we returned two days later to collect a pick-up order!

3.8 is my rating, I'll tell you why indeed:…read moreThe place was clean Entrée's were tasty But the rice and peas Did not amaze me. So here is my quick take on Mama Claire's... Flavor of the curry goat was amazing. The rice and beans you can tell they were not fresh. They were microwaved. The beans were dried out. The steamed veggies or cabbage was good. It was flavored well and I knew that I just should not get rice and peas based on other reviews. So I did not get rice and peas with the oxtails. I only got cabbage. The oxtails were OK. They also did not seem like they were fresh. They were tender and they were flavorful, but I could tell the flavor was kind of stagnant, if you will, like maybe they were frozen and defrosted. I don't know. I just know that the flavor wasn't as bright and aromatic as other oxtail experiences at other restaurants, and that's fine. It wasn't horrible, but I definitely preferred the curry goat. But the portions for the price were absolutely great!!! This made me say, you know, I would try this place again. I paid $18 and some change for an oxtail plate. Normally an oxtail plate is 30 something for a large and over 20 something for a regular, so I was very pleased with the fact that I was not paying 40 bucks for a plate of oxtails. Curry goat was hugely portioned and it was like 14 bucks. Space was clean and service was great. The young lady at front was kind and professional. Another review giving it to you straight no chaser from the Hungry Poet aka Lizz -Enjoy!

I came back a second time, and she actually remembered me, which made the experience even more special. She even threw in an order of spring rolls for my son and me, jokingly saying, "I gave you extra so you won't have to fight with your son!" She was absolutely adorable and had such a great sense of humor. The Vietnamese coffee was bold, robust, and perfectly sweet--it kept me going all day. The pho was served piping hot, fresh, and full of vibrant flavors. I also ordered the fried duck with rice and vegetables, and it was absolutely delicious. It even held up well on my drive home. The duck stayed crispy and hot, and the flavorful sauce on the vegetables tied everything together perfectly. I also tried the grilled pork vermicelli bowl with peanuts. I ordered another one with chicken and asked for it without peanuts because my son has a nut allergy. It was delicious--almost like a deconstructed pho without the broth. As good as it was, I still prefer the pho because the broth is, hands down, the best part. It's rich, flavorful, and absolutely worth coming back for. The portions are generous, so you'll easily have enough for two meals. Please check out this spot and show this hidden gem some love.
