If you've been to their spot in Oud West, you already know the vibe…read more It's the mother restaurant that started the craze, and it still holds the crown for one of the best atmospheres in Amsterdam. The concept is Japanese Finger Food (Izakaya style). Think less "giant bowl of ramen" and more "I want to try seven different things while sipping a highball." * Must-Haves: The salmon tataki is consistently perfect, and their katsu sando is a legitimate mood booster. * The Bar: Their selection of Japanese whiskies and sakes is top-tier. If you're unsure, ask the staff. Whether you're rolling deep with a group of friends or you're in town on a business trip and need a spot where you won't feel awkward sitting solo at the bar, this is it. It's buzzy, dimly lit, and high-energy without being pretentious. It's located in the heart of De Pijp. It's the perfect "anchor" for an evening. You can wander through the Albert Cuypmarkt during the day, grab dinner here, and then hit any of the neighboring bars for a nightcap. It's a popular spot and they don't always take reservations for small groups, so show up a little early or be prepared to grab a drink while you wait.

On our last night in Amsterdam, my wife and I were looking for a break from Heineken and…read morebitterballen and searched for lighter bites in the De Pijp neighborhood, when we stumbled upon this place. What. A. Gem. It wasn't an obvious choice, especially when we arrived as the local street market was breaking down the stalls and cleaning up the street trash outside. But these people know how to take care of you. Everything is made with intention and love. The dishes are made to share and come out as they are prepared, fresh and paced so that you're never overwhelmed by too many plates on your table. It's an intimate experience, with servers who are neither overbearing or far out of reach. The menu is simple and delicious. It has a very nice list of Japanese sake and whisky, and the cocktails are beautiful. We left in a perfect mood, neither full or hungry. The spinach salad was perfectly dressed and the Saikoro beef steak melts in the two sauces that accompany it. I cannot recommend highly enough. Such a nice send off from Amsterdam.

I've been in Amsterdam for 6 weeks now and I haven't had any Asian food (I've had KBBQ, Sichuan, pho, Indonesian, "asian", and boba LOL) that's made me say "wow!" This is the first place that I can say is as good as what I'm used to in Los Angeles. I had the tekka-don, which is marinated sashimi tuna over rice -- the fish was fresh and the rice was the correct temperature. There was a light, sweet soy coating the whole thing. 4/5 stars. I also ordered some yakitori -- the chicken leg meat with spring onions was nothing short of relevatory. The pork belly yakitori I ordered was pretty amazing too. The place is difficult to find -- it's tucked into a hidden corner of the mall but it's worth searching for.

There are grills at the tables and you cook your own food. I recommend you visit the other Tanuki, as this one was a disappointment. Food: 2/5 I'm pretty sensitive to salt but even the other people I ate with found the meat to be too salty. Rumor has it that restaurants with not so fresh meat salt their food heavily to preserve it for longer... We had various types of chicken and pork, and most of it was mediocre. The pork neck was very tasty but it was the only one out of 7 meats. Service: 3/5 The waitstaff was very polite and attentive. Atmosphere: 4/5 They did a really good job with the renovation, the restaurant is beautiful. It is a nice mixture of modern and traditional Japanese decor. They even have those adorable booths where you need to take your shoes off. However, you can't eat atmosphere. Value: 2/5 Each 100g of meat was about 5 euros, which adds up... in the end, we decided to finish what we ordered and then finish our meal at McDonalds.

You can even enjoy a manga or a magazine from their library while you wait, but read fast because service is rather quick. ;) This restaurant serves a variety of ramen noodle soups and grilled dishes, but also the typical Okonomi Yaki pancakes which I certainly recommend trying. However, if it's Sushi you're looking for, this place doesn't have it. But hey, if all you know is Sushi then perhaps it's time for you to discover the rest of Japanese cuisine! ;) The grilled dishes are particularly interesting and fun: your table has a built-in hot plate where you grill your food yourself. The chef and the waitress can show you how to do it if it's your first time. Relax, it's super easy! :) The prices are very reasonable for the quality provided here. Last Sunday day I had washu-gyu harami teisyoku (grilled beef with vegetables), my wife had curry udon teishoku (udon noodles soup with a curry sauce), and our son had yaki soba noodles as always. Nice weather, good food, fresh beer... bliss... Something to know if, like me, you live in the area: Buying a whole bottle of sake might be way too much for just one diner, however if you plan on going often it's definitely worth it: as with most real Japanese restaurants they will put your name on it and they will keep it for you for when you come back.

They close between lunch and dinner (closed from 14:00-18:00), and after multiple attempts I finally made it here when they were open. A variety of familiar dishes are served and everything is made with love and care. I saw a number of Japanese families come here for dinner. We had the tonkotsu ramen and the Kyoto shoyu ramen with gyoza. Both ramens were tasty and flavored well. In the tonkotsu ramen you could see the globs of delicious fat that are signature of true pork bone soup and it was rich in flavor. The Kyoto ramen is a lighter soup with thinner noodles and super tasty. The gyozas were perfectly made and cooked. Sadly, they were vegetable only but so delicious. Overall, solidly good food that I would love to have every day. Food: 5/5 Delicious home-cooked Japanese food. Atmosphere: 4/5 It has an open kitchen so it feels like sitting in someone's dining room. There are bookcases filled with Japanese books all around. Service: 4/5 Servers were polite and friendly. Value: 3/5 Ramen was around ~12 euros, so prices were average.
