My wife and I are from Hawaii and touring Amsterdam/Rhine River. After the Heineken Experience, we had the urge to eat authentic Japanese rice. There is nothing like perfect Japanese rice made into Onigiri. We found this small restaurant, a few blocks from the Heineken Brewery. The owner who is from Japan was friendly and very welcoming. He handmade the ONIGIRI and it was fresh. Onigiri Ya had a wide variety of great eats that ranged from salmon to vegan filled rice balls. We ate the salmon, teriyaki chicken, chicken Karaage, Kombu and the Wasabi Onigiri. The Rice was perfectly cooked and had so much flavor, with the right amount of salt, and stuffed with whatever you ordered wrapped with NORI. WOW! Like we say in Hawaii, SO ONO! In addition we had the hot Miso soup with wakame seaweed and tofu which hit the spot on this cold day. Try it! The food is great! We purchased this cloth bag with his Logo on it that can be used to carry the ONIGIRI or other stuff. Enjoy!

Salmon onigiri - only looks like a small portion of salmon but theres a perfect proportion to rice in there

Can honestly say I left this little shop happier than when I entered! I owe the pep in my step to the super kind chef that sold me a salmon onigiri. Being from Toronto I have been generally turned off to all the East Asian cuisine in Amsterdam, so visiting Onigiri YA! took a leap of faith. The person before me took the last unagi onigiri. The chef saw my sad facial expression and let me know if I would wait he would prepare more for me. It wasn't a big deal at all so I chose the salmon onigiri. The shop is small so I ate on the window ledge outside. Unwrapped my onigiri and took a bite. WOAH! DELICIOUS! Rice had excellent flavor and was fresh. Salmon had an awesome balance of skin and meat which made a whole difference. Onigiri is very simple but easier to screw up than you think. Here, they serve up little perfect rice balls as they should taste. I highly recommend this place! 5/5

Very good experience ! I am very happy to taste the real Onigiri in Amsterdam . Good job !

    Love this salmon onigiri.

We walked pass this tiny cutie little shop and decided to give it a go. I did read reviews about the chef and he's actually from Japan. What is better than having Japanese onigiri from a Japanese chef? It was so goooood. It really gives you a real taste of what proper Japanese onigiri! I'm from Hong Kong and we have many real Japanese resultant there. This is one of the very rare place you can have a real taste of Japanese snack!

Eight years ago Taka had an IT-job and was living in the area of Tokyo. He had been looking for a new adventure and decided to leave for Europe. Since October last year this somewhat shy, but very nice guy is living in Amsterdam and opened the one and only onigiri shop in town. As of March he makes and sells the Japanese version of a sandwich: snacks made from salted white rice formed into triangular or cylinder shapes and wrapped in seaweed. 'Unlike sushi we eat onigiri on a daily basis. It's great if you need a little bite on the go. Onigiri are ready to eat; no additions needed. You can carry them with you and have nibbles during the day.' How convenient, no? Luckily these daily fresh snacks are tasty too. I tried the ones with salmon, tuna mayo and wasabi and really liked them: perfectly cooked sticky rice with pure fillings - more fish than I expected. Say bye bye to your usual slices of bread for lunch and have 2 onigiri and a bowl of miso soup instead.

These are the wasabi and tuna onigiri, absolutely delicious

Great little place to go to get Japanese comfort snacks. Onigiri was good and the owner was extremely nice.

Staff don't bother to find tables for you; they let customers figure things out among themselves. Alright. We eventually grabbed a table after 5-10 minutes, then had our order taken 10 minutes later. The food took a long time to come out: about 40 minutes (other than 1 appy that came out after 20). Good thing it was tasty. We got: -plantain fries (€6) -- tasty, especially with the sweet dipping sauce, but you get about 8 fries, so not great value. -okonomiyaki (€12.90) -- this was wonderful. So many lovely textures, flavours, and seasoned beautifully. This was the highlight of the meal for me. -vegan plate (€18.90) -- really nicely designed plate, with a base of brown rice, with a sort of Japanese slaw, vegan chicken katsu, tempura (apparently, though I didn't notice it), and stir fried veggies. Super tasty stuff. Not the biggest portion, but not bad either. My friends each got the crispy roti wrap (€14.90), which they loved, and the taste I had was great. Overall, great food, not the best dining experience. Perhaps my experience wasn't representative. I'd go back for the okonomiyaki alone.
