We previously left a great review for this place before we moved here. I'd still say the experience and location itself merits 5 stars, but we are now giving their vodka and gin 1 star along with their level of service. While it's a cool place and fun to visit, we will no longer buy their alcohol. We purchased a bottle of gin and a bottle of vodka and kept it stored in the freezer for those scorching hot Valley days. Upon taking the bottles out of the freezer a few weeks later to make some cocktails for the deck weather, the bottles looked like they were only 1/2 full and turned completely into sludge. Almost the consistency of hair gel. What's worse, we messaged them to let them know (in the end of August) and no one even bothered to respond to us. We have bought Ironworks many times before that and this will be the last time. To spend $100 on booze and have it go to waste is just hard to swallow. It truly makes me wonder what's in the liquor if it can't be frozen like any other alcohol.

Highly recommend grabbing a bottle or two of locally made & sourced fruit liquors as a souvenir ! For $27 each (tax included), we bought a 375mL bottle of Blueberry Liqueur and Rhubarb Esprit. The staff were very nice about giving testers and after trying most their fruit liqueurs, these were our favourite. FUN FACT: the national fruit of Nova Scotia is their local blueberries! And the Haskap berry liqueur is quite popular because a lot of people haven't heard of this locally grown berry, which tastes more tart. They also sell Trio sets of 50ml bottles for $26, but these aren't as economical as buying one flavour's 375ml bottle.

    The still!

This is a flourishing business in Old Lunenburg and shows how the perfect match of business model, location and concept can really add to a town's appeal. A few years ago Ironworks was launched in the old Thomas Walter's and Sons building -- the marine blacksmith shop near Lunenburg's historic shipyard. They renovated the building, keeping all the period charm, and instilled, well, a still -- a shiny steampunky contraption of copper and brass. They produce a line of simply superb liqueurs, rum and vodka, beautifully packaged, sensibly priced and of first quality. The staff are friendly and helpful, and you can sample anything before you buy, which is a great pleasure in itself. I often buy presents from friends from away here, and it's very popular with visitors looking for a classy and consumable souvenir of their travels. Kudos to the company for an inspired use of an historic building, for making a great product and for adding extra charm to Lunenburg!

Great staff. The bluenose rhum is amazing and all of their liquors are delicious. Left with the raspberry liquor which is midsweet.

We arrived before the supper rush and while it was busy, the place was not full by any means with multiple empty tables. We sat up in 'The Boat' which is right next to the bar which is an awkward step up but we weren't offered one of the empty tables so we figured it out even though it wasn't conducive to having a conversation with two other people. The server who gave us menus was friendly but failed to bother to bring any water the entire time we sat there (nearly an hour). The first round of drinks showed up fairly promptly and she took our food order right after that. We opted not to get appetizers because we didn't want to eat too much before our show, but had we known how long we'd have to wait, we would have gotten something. We couldn't even order something to share between the four of us because 'The Boat' is two separate tables. We chatted as we waited for our drinks that we finished and waited some more for someone to bring food. After the last drinks were empty for at least 10 minutes, our server came back to ask if we wanted another round. Seeing as we didn't have food yet (we'd already been waiting 30 minutes), I opted out while the three others ordered one. At this point, I wasn't willing to spend more money for poor service and a long wait. We watched as a large group that clearly arrived long before us, finally got their food after 35 minutes of us having put in our order. A couple across from us showed up at least 20 minutes after us, got drinks, food and the bill before we were even offered a second drink or told about where our food was. During the time, we watched as other patrons came in, were served their food and left before our food even arrived. After about 40 minutes, our server came around and said 'it shouldn't be much longer, we're training kitchen staff so it's taking a little longer'. Not our problem, and clearly not true seeing as so many others who arrived after us were getting their food. The entire time we were waiting, servers stood around the register talking and not really checking on tables. By this point, people kept rolling in, the place got busy and we still didn't have our food 45 minutes after ordering. When our orders finally showed up after 53 minutes of being placed, mine wasn't what I ordered. I asked for a pan fried fish burger and got pan fried fish. The server was adamant that's what I ordered and proceeded to tell me that 'the only difference is the bun and veggies, otherwise it's the same fish'. I was quite surprised at the comment rather than offering to make it right. Given we had a waited nearly an hour for our food by this point, I sucked it up and just ate what I got. Service here is definitely lacking and it's clear staff doesn't have the skills required to deal with people. While the food was alright, the sides looked like they were scraped off of other peoples' plates and just thrown onto ours. No one bothered to check on us or apologize. When the bill arrived, I noticed $5.50 taken off and no explanation. I begrudgingly paid the nearly $70 bill for the two of us and decided we wouldn't be back again!

The vibe was very cool, place was packed with lots of very friendly locals and tourists, everyone chatty, super fun. One of the worst dining experiences I've had in years. I…read moredon't enjoy writing negative reviews, but this was unacceptable. We visited The Old Fish Factory to celebrate my nephew's 5th birthday -- a group of three adults and two small children. The restaurant was more than half empty when we arrived, yet we stood at the front for ten minutes without being acknowledged. Several staff walked by, made eye contact, and kept walking. When someone finally seated us, the table was still dirty. She apologized and offered to clean it -- I ended up wiping it myself because it was still covered in crumbs after she half heartedly wiped it down. Service continued to deteriorate from there. It took another 10 minutes to take our drink and food order. We ordered two smash burgers, a wrap, two kids' meals, and a hummus appetizer. We asked for the kids' meals to come out with the appetizer, which seemed like a straightforward request. Unfortunately, we never saw our server again. Our drinks sat visibly on the bar for over 20 minutes. We tried flagging someone down -- we were brushed off with, "I'll see if I can find her." Eventually, someone else brought the kids' meals and appetizer. We asked again about our drinks, which were still untouched at the bar. Another person -- not our server -- finally grabbed them. No one came to check in. After we finished the appetizers, we waited. And waited. The kids, now long finished, grew restless. Forty-five minutes went by without a word. Nearly 90 minutes after ordering, our mains finally arrived. The wrap was cold inside. The burgers were burnt and tasted pre-frozen. The $9 "potato salad" was boiled potatoes with a drizzle of mayo -- truly. When I expressed -- calmly -- that the experience was unacceptable, the response was silence. No apology, no adjustment to the bill, no effort to make it right. Instead, they simply handed me the machine and said, "You just have to tap," implying they weren't expecting a tip -- not because they took accountability, but because they knew they hadn't earned one. I rarely leave reviews like this, and I'm not a picky diner. But this place was disorganized, indifferent, and dismissive from start to finish. We left disappointed, $150 poorer, and without so much as a simple "sorry." Lunenburg is full of wonderful places to eat -- this just isn't one of them.

It's not a huge store, but they have a nice selection of what I assume are some good wines, mostly higher-end liquors, and a nice little niche that they seem to be carving out in the craft beer market, which is more of my bag. They have a couple racks and coolers of the many great beer offerings from around Nova Scotia, as well as regional ones like Picaroons and Dieu du Ciel. I just want to buy them all and stock my own beer fridge! The kicker though is the great idea that they had to offer growlers of beer for brewers that are located outside of the city and are unable to do so here. When I was there on Super Bowl Sunday they had their own RockHead pale ale (made by Garrison I believe), Butcher's Block Red and Hippie Dippie Pale Ale from Tatamagouche Brewing, and Boxing Rock's Vicar's Cross double IPA. Deposit on the growler bottles is $7, and re-fills seem to range from $10-$15, both plus tax. This is a fantastic addition to the neighbourhood, especially since this is in my go-to grocery store. I'm looking forward to quenching my thirst with RockHead's delicious offerings.
