Just some fun time at the library
    Cori B.

I enjoy coming here with my kids. I love the book selection and everything they have to offer for the kids. Story time, craft time. Programs ( like 1000 books before kindergarten) have really encouraged my boys to read, and love reading. Even the toy area is super fun!

You get the charm of the original building paired with the modern beauty of the Bausch & Lomb structure both are worth seeing. The library offers a ton of programs for kids, teens, and adults. Definitely check their website, because there's so much going on. Becoming a cardholder is easy, and once you are, make sure you look into their VIP section, you can snag free or discounted tickets to local attractions. You can check out physical books, audiobooks, and ebooks, and they're great if you need computer access or printing. They also have plenty of study areas and quiet spots to get work done. Honestly, they offer more than most people realize (myself included until recently!). The only downside is parking and it can be a bit tricky. I'm not sure if they validate or offer any vouchers, so it's worth asking. I was lucky enough to find street parking... but yes, you do have to pay. A great library with so much to offer. Highly recommend exploring everything they provide.

The children's section was large with lots of books and plenty of activities. A coloring station, a small play greenhouse to read in, and a "secret room" hidden behind a bookshelf, providing another quiet area to play or read. Children's section had its own bathrooms, with child-sized fixtures, which was convenient.

Sometimes, when I walk in, I still see the old layout from before the 90s era renovation, which tells you how much time I spent here. But I'd still do it in a minute. It was in the children's space where I truly became a reader. I'm happy to report that the children's space is still as magical as it was upwards of 30 years ago. I still like looking around for the newest in so-called juvenile fiction (which can be more daring and brave than "adult" fiction, but that's a rant for another day). At one time, BML had a book with a plate in it celebrating my completion of the summer reading program, and I made a point to check it out to keep its circulation statistics boosted. Alas, that book has since been weeded out, but a picture of a bookplate is forever. Brighton's collection is decent sized, definitely one of the larger ones in the area. When you walk in, new releases are in the room to your right. What I really like is the shelf near the entrance featuring award winners, popular titles, and things you may have missed the first time around. It's a great way to find something new. There are plenty of tables to get work done at, and small study rooms are available. A good library should have a mix of quiet and a low roar, and BML has that in droves. I will continue to utilize Brighton Memorial Library for as long as I am able to. In a world full of ebooks, sometimes you just need a physical copy, and there's nothing like going to your childhood library to grab a book.

Rochester is so lucky to have the Lincoln Branch Library. This branch has the potential to fade…read moreaway and be neglected just because of its geographic qualities, but instead embraces them and serves its constituents better than many other libraries I've visited. I'll admit it, I was initially afraid to come here because of the street address. As a library lover and good citizen, I'm ashamed of that. Every library needs love, no matter the location. I recently had the opportunity to attend an event held at the library by the Young Urban Preservationists, and I not only had an amazing time at the event itself, but got to poke around in the library and see a neighborhood that needs a little extra TLC. Lincoln, the result of mergers and consolidation in the 1990s, is an excellent example of a library that really meets the needs of patrons. This branch serves the largest Spanish-speaking population, and has a large collection of Spanish language materials for circulation. I was also impressed by the equal number of flyers in English and Spanish in the front vestibule. Understanding patron needs is a huge part of successful libraries. Lincoln does an amazing job with limited resources, like all city libraries do. The bilingual materials and tailored books take the branch above and beyond other branches. As a bonus, many of the staff members are bilingual too. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the toy library housed here at Lincoln. I could go on and on about how amazing the toy library is, but I'll restrain myself and encourage you all to see it for yourselves. Housing the toy library at Lincoln is so smart because odds are, the kids that go to Lincoln regularly probably don't have access to a ton of toys at home. I hate saying that, but the toy library makes up for it. Toys are divided by types of play: educational, infant/toddler, sensory, games, creative, pretend. Toys circulate for three weeks, just like books, and the three week period is enough time to replicate the time it usually takes for a kid to discover a new toy, play it out, and move on. The entire room is interactive, so you can start playing before you even take anything home. Like with all city branches, Lincoln does have the same issues with a lack of physical space, lack of hours, but does have a decent amount of parking. If the library were open more often, I suspect it would be packed to the gills every day, much like it was that afternoon I visited. Again, it's no fault of the library, just that city libraries need to be open more often on a whole. I'm so happy I finally had a chance to visit the Lincoln branch, especially for a program. This is a library that loves the community and wants to serve everyone as best they can, like any good library should. Let's all make a point to stop by and give this library the love it deserves.
