I found Michael Busby when I requested quotes on HomeAdvisor for framing carpenters. He had all solid 5 star reviews on Home Advisor. My project was to section off part of my garage to make a laundry room so that vacation renters can use my washer and dryer that are in the garage, without accessing the rest of my garage. I also later sent out quote request on Yelp.
Michael was first to respond and was at my door to view the situation in just 10 minutes from the time we talked on the phone, on a Thursday. (His office was just a stones throw away). He said he could start and complete the job that weekend. Michael's quote was $1250 at that time, which was Thurs.
Friday I got other bids, ranging from $999 - $1550, including another bid from someone who was unlicensed, at $999. I asked Michael if he would match the very detailed written $999 bid, which I sent to him. He said that he would. Not that I care, if someone is licensed or not.... for THIS type of job of framing and drywall, totaling 14 feet plus a door, but I decided why not hire a 5 star licensed general contractor, over someone unlicensed (had good reviews too) for the same price, and Michael told me he could do it the next day. So I told Michael he could have the job, and sent him emailed acceptance for $999, and Michael went to buy the materials that same Friday night, and said he would be at my house at around 12 noon Sat.
Upsetting thing is the next morning at 9:24, the guy who told me $999, said he forgot he gives 15% discount for jobs $1000 or more, and dropped his price to $849. I saw this only about 30 min before Michael came to my door. I showed him on my computer the other guy's revised bid, but Michael would not come down in his price. He said he already spent $350 for materials and has to make at least $600 a day on a job, or he is just "working for wages". If I wanted to go with the other guy he would just return the materials he bought. I felt Michael was here to do the job for price we agreed on, he came on time, I did not feel good about changing on him, to someone I didn't even meet yet. So I paid him the $999.
Anyhow I am happy with the work Michael did, and he kept in touch with me at all times. Like emailing me right before arriving, "I'm on my way" , and emailing me when he was leaving, cos the mud was taking longer to dry (I went out). He surprised me by using all metal framing instead of real wood, which he said the metal framing is 4 x as expensive. He said termites don't eat it. I asked Michael to put the drywall only on one side. On the other side, I am paying a handyman to make me "shelves" for canned food, out of the scraps of metal that I picked back out of the trash. You cut the sheet metal to be fastened as trays for cans, between the 2 x 4s.and rivet them there.
Also Michael had the eye for spotting inferior workmanship by other recent contractors that I had hired to replace fascia, in other areas of my house, that Michael brought to my attention on a couple of occasions, that inexperienced me never noticed or thought about. I shall be taking that up with that contractor. read more
