David came by and gave us a fair quote to repair our fence/gate on Jan. 20th. Three of the poles became eroded over the years and we needed them replaced and reset and he changed the 2x4s along the fence line that had termite damage. On the second day, he asked for half of the money to get supplies. ($500. I know, red flag!) He replaced the 2x4s (he used framing wood instead of outdoor wood) and didn't bother taking a lot of the staples out from the fence boards, hence, making the boards not flush to the 2x4s. He reset 3 posts, 2 of which did not set because the holes were not deep enough. He came one full day and 3 days after that for maybe a total of 3 hours. To make a long story short, we haven't heard from him since Jan. 24th. Now we are getting quotes from LICENSED fence companies to repair what David did. I do not recommend David to fix anyone's fence. We learned the hard way. read more

This was our second time using David Handyman Services. The first time his old "partner" completed the work. We hired David to cut/replace 4 tiles along with re-grouting and sealing our outside deck. He informed us his work was backed for at least 6 months. The job was completed over a two day span with a few hiccups one being it had rained the night following him placing the tiles. He insisted it was okay to grout and seal the tile, although we worried it had not set. He finished the job, it looked good at the time and then issues started occurring immediately! A month goes by and the grout starts chipping. I contact David and he agreed to come out and re-grout the surface. We scheduled two appointments, both time he was a no show. I've given him the flexibility to make it right and he hasn't. It's now been 3 months and sections of the grout work have now completely been chipped and removed. Today, we had another handyman out to look at the job and it needs to be completely redone as the tiles are not set and are moving. I assume David knew this was the case and the reason why he didn't follow through to show up or back up his work. read more

I had called Dave for quote on a patch and match for a 1947 home that had some moisture bubbling in the stucco. He was on time, congenial at our meeting and gave me a fair estimate. Fortunately he has someone on his team that has done stucco for many years to help feather and match the styling. After I got the paint color matched, it all blended seamlessly after the stucco dries. The team were very nice and clean and finished before the quoted time. I would definitely use them again. We have used David and his team of handymen twice now and plan to use them again in the future. On the first project they did a day and a half worth of odd jobs, from spackling and touchup paint, painting tables, hanging curtain rods and picture frames to putting new hinges on cabinets and building shelves in a utility closet. 2nd project they painted a hallway and regrouted a few places in the shower. I was impressed with how they listened and were respectful, and also how responsive David was. It was great to call him and then have the work complete within a few days. A few minor things were missed but when I pointed them out they did them without squabbling about it. David came to bid both jobs and then sent two guys to do the work. We used David's Handyman last week. David Johnston is awesome!!! We had a pocket door that was falling apart. I didn't think it was repairable without removing all the drywall and replacing the entire door and frame. David came out for a consultation and agreed that maybe the entire door and frame would have to be replaced. Or, that maybe he could simply remove the casing, pull out the door, and replace the wheels. He gave me an estimate for each case. Luckily for us, it was only a wheel replacement. While he was at our house, my wife found three other things that needed fixing. He fixed our sliding glass door, installed a security light, and installed a plaque on our mailbox wall. Dave was done with everything in five hours. I was blown away when I got home. He shows up on time. He is fast, and he cleans up after each task. I couldn't be more impressed. Not only that, David is a likable guy. He has a good balance in being friendly, and getting the job done quickly. If I can stay at work and trust a guy to work at my house when nobody is home, I have hit the jackpot. It almost pays for me not to do those tasks by myself. Warning!! Do not use this service. Abandons jobs in the middle. Please read other posts as they are true. David was supposed to strip and re paint the front of our house and tear down a shed and haul it away. The first day on the job I was asked if I had any cash cause they were broke. Then I was told a sob story that his truck and tools were stolen. Then I was asked half way through the job that if I was paying by credit card could I pay now because it would take a couple of days. Also one of his employees asked when we were going to pay him? We told him to ask his boss. Because David was so nice we felt bad for him and gave him a $300 cash tip. Since then we haven't heard from him. We have called and texted with no response. I feel pretty stupid. He even offers a 6 month warranty. How do I have a warranty on something that wasnt done? I live with my parents who have Alzheimer's and are on a fixed income so I can't work because I take care of them. This was a huge hit on our budget. I will have to try to haul the shed debris down myself and find a way to get it taken away and find someone to paint the front of our house when the budget allows again. We are going to have to live with our front of our house all sanded down and trash everywhere. Please please read the other posts. This isn't the first or 2nd time this has happened. He is good at starting a job but not finishing. He has ruined my trust in handyman services. In the future I will only use well known licensed contractors. Here it is, my first Yelp review, ever. I own a new rental property in Point Loma, was in between tenants, and needed to have some repairs done. I ended up having him not only tend to the repairs but decided to have him go ahead and do a full re-paint of the entire home which included ceilings, walls, baseboards and doors. I was in a time pinch and needed the work done within 4 days. Keep in mind July 4th was in the middle of all this. David came in, gave me a proper and fair assessment of labor/material costs. The work was finished by Sunday just in time for my new tenant to move in. I'd give the initial work 4/5 stars. However, coming from a background in general contracting/construction I know that paint can be tough and lighting plays a big factor in that. When we went through our final walk through we both pointed out a couple areas that needed to be touched up. David was quick to act and completed the touch up areas within a matter of an hour and brought the standard of his work to a 5 star quality. Additionally, I had to have the master bedroom re-carpeted. David was straight forward with me and said he's not the man for that job but he knew someone good and referred me to Carlos Quinonez. To be brief, I had brand new and nearly identical berber carpet installed within 8 hours of David's referring me to Carlos. Also, they cleaned up everything they touched. Which was important because my new tenant moved in that same Sunday evening that they finished up on. I found David on Yelp and am really satisfied with him and his crew. He always returns my call and email in 1 or 2 days to discuss about the work and price estimate. On the work day, he and his crew appeared on time. The labor cost is totally affordable when you buy the materials on your own. David will let you know what to buy depending on your repair requests. Here are the works that he and his crew finished within one day: 1. Removed five wall cabinets, two window shutters. 2. Patched the wall afterwards. 3. Painted a whole bedroom (except the ceiling). 4. Installed two big window blinds and two patio shapes. 5. Installed two GFCI electrical outlets. 6. Patched the bench grout of kitchen. 7. Changed seven door locks. I added the tiles repair later on.I also had his crew (Adrian) worked on changing the floor tiles of whole bathroom in the following week and was happy with the work. Dave and his team are reliable, flexible, diligent, and fairly priced. I needed new storm door installed and a difficult waterline run to my fridge. I called another handyman, after I explained the job would be difficult the other guy declined and referred Dave. Dave setup a time to come over and check out the work. Even though it was a tough job that would take some ingenuity he said no problem and scheduled me for the following week. He called me when he was on the way. I had agreed to pickup the door and materials, but I found out that the door wouldn't fit in my SUV and wasn't able to. I explained the situation to Dave he said no problem, grabbed the door and materials and showed up right away. They covered everything and finished the job on time. The door was much harder to install than I thought it would be, but he found a solution and got it done. This review is not related to David's skills as a handyman, as he never showed up after numerous back and forth communications and reschedules. It is however, a review on his punctuality and ability to follow through on commitments. I was recommended to David by another handyman as I have a door issue. We scheduled for David to arrive on Monday and I get a txt early Monday morning around 9:00 AM that he is sick and cannot make it. I understand, illness happens, so we rescheduled for Friday, even though I've made it a point to be at my house that day. On Friday morning I txt David to confirm our appointment. Again, I've planned my day to be at my house to meet David on Friday. He confirms the appointment and indicates that he'll be their by 4:30 but that he may get a little delayed in traffic. At this point, It's clear my job is not a priority. I had thought from our previous discussion, we were committed to him showing up on Friday. Friday, sometime during business hours, like most workers. I'm still patient and I tell David, ok, I'll see you at 4:30. 4:30 rolls around and there is no sign of David. I call David, I get nothing. 5:30 rolls arounds and I don't know where David is. I do finally get a txt from David at 5:40 indicating that he'd left his current job and will be further delayed in traffic. By this time, I had already left the house for dinner, as there was no response from David. Beginning to get frustrated, I tell him not to bother as I've already left the house. No sense in him showing up at this point. Like a moth to a flame, I finally give David one more chance. I ask him when he thinks he can come. He just responded that he was busy with no indication that he even wanted to reschedule. Make your judgement but my experience with David only perpetuates the stereotype of contractors showing up late and not following through on commitments. Honestly, it didn't have to be this way. He should have probably told me that he was unwilling or unable to do job. He could have given me any reason on Monday but now I'm scrambling to coordinate someone else to get a door fixed because David just couldn't follow through on commitment and communication. To be referred by The Handyman w/ 5 stars of 300 reviews means David is someone that The Handyman trust. I called David, left a voice message, and within a couple of hours he called me back. I got a quote for inside door replacement, door frame (fix), fence gate w/ rotten wood, shelf installation, and wood carvings (heavy) wall hanging. He requested for me to send him pictures of the door frame and fence gate, so he can give me an exact quote. He gave me a quote with the breakdown for each item, which is very helpful specially if you're in a budget and need to prioritize. The next day I contacted him back so that we can go ahead with the project and he scheduled the next day. I guess I got lucky he got me in really fast and I'm free that day. Day of the service, David was on time and started work immediately. He was courteous and friendly. He was very knowledgeable and was kind enough to give me some tips. I also, liked that he was not pushy to sell me more service, example: I did not get him to paint the door since it is a job I can do. I will certainly hire David again in the future and will recommend him to any one that needs a handyman. read more

I was a little taken aback because I wouldn't be calling a handyman if I had someone who could help. He asked me to put a list together for him and email me everything on the list. He gave me a price of $80 to install a interior door. I purchased the door and he was going to install it. He quoted me an additional $50 to paint the door. At this time I was not informed that $50 was only for labor not paint. He sent Adrian and Don to install the door but I noticed the paint job was not complete and it had only one coat. At that point I was informed by Don that he was told only to do one coat of paint by David. I called David to get some clarification and I was told $50 for first coat and then $20 more would get me another coat and was never told that I had to buy the paint. I didn't think that was fair but agreed to pay the $20 for an extra coat. Don wanted to complete the job the same day but Adrian would not stay. I rescheduled with David for the following week and the night before the job was to be completed, he texts me and informs me that the $20 for the extra coat is only for labor and I need to buy the paint. I was not going to pay another $20 and buy the paint. I found him to be very sleezy and dishonest. He was changing the cost/rules as he went along. I don't think that's fair practice. He should've told me everything upfront and I definitely would not have hired him. I see all of these good reviews for him but my experience was the total opposite. Which makes me wonder if they are real reviews. I can't imagine my situation being an isolated incident, unless there is some racial discrimination going on here. Whatever the case, DANGER DANGER. My usual handyman was not available so Yelp has led me to Dave. I called him up to hang some shelving for me. He showed up bright & early the next morning with a helper and did his thing. It turns out I was missing some of the hardware he needed to finish the job that day. (I had already told him I had everything already, how embarrassing!) I needed to go out and run errands anyway, so I decided to get the hardware myself at Home Depot later that day. He showed up again the next day to finish the job, and did not even charge me extra for dragging it out over 2 days. Just tried to schedule an appointment with David. He gave me an option on a Thursday between 2:30-3 and I told him I would have to move a work meeting but will do so. He then calls back a few hours later and tells he he overbooked himself. I reminded him that I just moved a meeting but ok, let's look at another date. A few hours ago he was available Saturday but now he is not. Fine, we look at Monday. I told him I would get out of work as early as I could At 3. He said, ok 3 at the latest. Then suddenly changes his mind and says no it has to be 2. I tell him I can't get out of work that early and he says, "sorry but I'm not going to sit in traffic". ??? I would love to have a job where I don't have to sit in traffic! Must be nice! If you like being given the runaround, moving your schedule around only to have him cancel and tell you he doesn't like traffic then this is the guy for you. As for me, I am moving on. read more
