Overall, it was an acceptable experience. We arrived for a late lunch, and the establishment was quiet, with only one gentleman awaiting a take-out order. We followed the instruction to seat ourselves. There was a brief wait before we were attended to, and a slightly longer delay before our presence was acknowledged. The initial service was a little slow, but it improved considerably after we placed our order. Our food was served quite promptly. I selected the fried shrimp and fish, both of which were enjoyable. However, I found the coleslaw to be not to my liking. The roll was rather small and did not seem fresh. The highlight of the meal was undoubtedly the coffee, which tasted fresh and had a pleasant, smooth flavor. We were not offered dessert. I believe this is an old truck stop restaurant, but at a Petro gas station . One waitress not busy but took along time to get our food. You can't order 1-2 pancakes or two eggs and hash browns only off what's on the menu. The food wasn't bad at all. Good that the truckers can get a real sit down meal the place seemed clean, need to update seats and clean their sugar, salt and pepper shakers instead of just constantly filling them. Unbelievably awful food. I mean genuinely the worst food I have ever ate at a restaurant. The wait time had to have been at least an hour. I have visited this Iron Skillet a few times. With each visit, I hone my seat selection. I almost lucked out today when Lawrence saw me sitting patiently and came over with a menu. Unfortunately, a waitress who had previously waited on me scooped in. So why the two stars? The aforementioned, unnamed waitress walks past paper litter on the floor, fails to clean food scraps from the floor, leaves used plates and utensils on tables. But always grabs the tips! A previous visit produced dirty utensils on my table, before I had even ordered. I brought it to the attention of my waitress and she quickly replaced them. So far, not one of my visits has yielded clean utensils. I *always* have to wipe the dishwasher film off of each knife, fork and spoon. Today, at the salad bar, there were 4 dirty plates off to the side, and the first one I grabbed from the clean plate stack joined the other 4. Finally, the floor was sticky. Like, you could hear your shoes as you lifted them for each step. Today, I bought the dinner buffet. The lettuce leaves were huge, cole slaw and potato salad had tongs for service. The hot side of the buffet is ok, just ok. The salad side is nothing-to-write-home-about. The bright spot today was watching Lawrence taking care of his diners. His professionalism shined through, and when he wasn't busy waiting on tables, he cleaned the floors in his area and tended to his tables, preparing them for his next dining customers. You can bet that I will sit in his area the next chance I get. I wish the salad bar was as good here as the Country Pride restaurant in the Travel Centers of America at exit 22 along I-94 in Porter, IN. Their salad bar is something to look forward to. read more

This is a big company, a big chain of truckstop restaurants and they are usually pretty good. As a truck driver, this is the first time that I've seen this ridiculousness... couldn't eat anything during the day because of some issues with my trailer, drove from mattoon, Illinois to here 180 miles, paid a $18 for a reserved parking spot and sat to eat as much food possible. Ordered a double bacon burger and a 6 piece chicken tender lunch at a price of $8.99 and this is what I got... (picture with two ketchup cups and a bbq one) When I asked the waiter if those were the six pieces, she says: "yes... let me ask the cook guy because I know this is ridiculous, so she went inside and asked him about it, skinny black dude with long hair (don't know his name) with a very rude attitude says that he can't do anything about it because that is served by portions and that's what I was getting because there's nothing that he could do about it... (the hell I will!!!) Nah bro, keep your food, I'm not here asking for a favor or for free food, I came here to eat, to make some business. There's another truck stop across the street with a Denny's restaurant, this is the last time I'm stopping here, is just not worth it. for the same amount of money I can get the chester's six piece tender snack and it taste better. read more

I visited w/family for first time (3/1/18). The food it ok. It'll keep you going. I don't think the biscuits w/sausage gravy is made in house-didn't taste like it. The menu is extensive. this is officially the worst iron skillet i been too. and im a trucker who only cares for a warm meal but instead i waited 30 minutes with almost an empty restaurant. the ladies working would just look at me and then go about their business so after an additional 20 mins I decided to leave when the person adjacent to my seat started to complain about their food which was the only thing that kept me from leaving in the first place. read more

Terrible experience!! The employees of this establishment are extremely rude. My husband was serving himself at the buffet, there were no tongs for the breaded fish so he grabbed the ones nearby that were in the container for the fried fish. No big deal right? Well, a female employee on the other side of the buffet SNATCHED the tongs from his hand and walked away.. No explanation, no apology, nothing. Then she tossed them in the sink and walked back. Just plain rude. To top it off, another employee dropped tongs on the floor, picked them up and put them right back into the food. Our server was too busy talking to the other employees to even notice we were finished and ready for our check even though my husband attempted several times to get her attention. They were too busy flirting with the kitchen staff to give service and seemed bothered when people walked in. At one point a cook came out of the kitchen I assume to smoke or use the restroom, he came back with one of his hands down the front of his pants!! Ok food, not worth the hour and fifteen min wait for food to come. Slow service!! Slow everything!!

Today is my 3rd time in this place, every time has been a disappointment. If you order anything other then the buffet it's about a 30 wait. Once I waited 20 minutes for a cheeseburger and before it came out the waitress came out said there out of buns so it came on two slices of bread. The last time I waited 30 minutes for a burger and the waitress came out to say she's sorry but there all out of Berger's so I ordered the Philly cheesesteak and it was terrible and very greasy. Today I decided to see if the buffet would be ok and it wasn't. It's a Taco buffet and everything is greasy and bland. The chips are loaded with dirty oil from the fryer. Mac and cheese out of the box would be better than the stuff they have out. I think I'd rather eat the box it comes in next time. Everything is substandard, only thing that was good was a slice of store bought cheesecake they gave me the last time I was here. Also there's a guy that walks around wearing a trash bag like a rain coat cleaning up the place. To top it off today they had to call the cops in to break up an argument in the kitchen. Too bad management doesn't care, seems like all the restaurants in the area suck. If they didn't have truckers that aren't familiar with this location and don't have many options for food this place wouldn't be in business. read more

The buffet food was okay. It was BBQ day and the ribs were okay. The smoked brisket was tender and tasty. For me what made this a two star rating was the horrible soup. I had vegetable beef soup and it tasted like it came from a package mix of vegetable beef. Bland favor. Nothing about the soup was appealing. Terrible service...food isn't worth the price...cashiers aren't friendly at all...will never go there again...my boyfriend ordered the biscuits and gravy to go when we got home saw that there was paper lining the food tray which absorbed all the gravy!! So he just had eggs and dry biscuits...he called to ask for the manager and was put on hold and never got to speak to anybody.
