Because of the sheer breadth, some categories (like fabrics, for example) have a smaller variety, which is just an observation, not a critique. Ribbons are unrivaled. We live in Newton, MA and out of a handful of other local companies, Eric gave the best price. Eric and his brother arrived on time to set it up in our backyard and came back to take it down. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for renting a bouncy house. Two weeks later, we used them for our Elementary School PTO run Halloween Festival. First Class Parties was $175 cheaper than the Newton-based company that the PTO used for the last few years. We will be renting from First Class Parties next year for sure!

A few days before the big day, I was still mulling over how to celebrate my little brother's…read moregraduation from Berklee College of Music during a pandemic. The whole family was very sad that we wouldn't be together for our planned trip for commencement; it would have been only my second time to visit him there and the first time all together as a family, including some of our long-distance extended family. I knew that my brother was also heartbroken after how hard he and his classmates had worked in the last few years, especially since as a double composition major, the pandemic canceled the big senior year performance of his work that he had organized. I wanted to do more than flowers; he's a funny, creative, guy who would appreciate something outside the box. Plus, since I couldn't be there in person, I wanted a gesture big enough to show how much I wanted to be there celebrating him! THAT'S WHEN INSPIRATION STRUCK!!! I wanted to deliver some kind of message, but social distancing makes a lot of "event" style messages harder. And he lives in a tiny apartment near campus. So what could be better than delivering a LITERAL GIANT MESSAGE? I knew a ballon message was the way to go. I had used the big letter/number balloons before at a party, so I was prepared to pay a bit to make it happen. The challenge is, not only was it commencement weekend for several colleges and universities in Boston, it was also Mother's Day weekend. The word was it was going to be difficult to find a last minute delivery of any kind; my initial thought was to order online, schedule a pickup, and use a local courier from an app like Postmates or even TaskRabbit to deliver it, but 1) stores were either closes (Party City) or had no online presence and 2) I was concerned that a balloon bunch of this size would not fit in most Bostonian's cars. The next step was to get in touch with some local shops and just see what my options were; many balloon decorators use the large ABC balloons on event products but don't take smaller jobs or only do limited balloon bouquets, and many stores keep the numbers in stock for birthdays and don't have the letters at all without advance order. To Yelp!! When I saw Balloon City's reviews, two things that jumped out at me were "last minute" and "delivery", and they just happened to still be open (there's a time difference!), so I knew I had to give them a call straight away. I was so thankful I did. Christine couldn't have been better; she was so helpful (this was my first time ordering a balloon bouquet in advance!), and genuinely seemed happy to hear a little about my brother (she said they do event balloons for several Boston colleges including Berklee, so she feels the sadness of the canceled events too!). She was able to check her stock right away and give me multiple options. She was upfront about her concerns for the letters she only had 1 or 2 of; if something was wrong, there was no extra, so I'd need to be flexible. The price she gave me was less than my plane ticket had been, so while I was nervous to pay so much at first, I realized that this was the big gesture wanted since I couldn't be there, and I was happy to make it happen! She even called me shortly after completing my order to let me know all the balloons inflated great and were in good shape. The next morning, she also called me to help me get in touch with my brother and make sure she had the right phone number for him, so he could accept the delivery at his building entrance. We happened to all be on a video chat as a family just after his digital ceremony, including grandma and the aunts and uncles and cousins down south, so we all got to see his face when my ridiculous delivery arrived and brought it into his apartment! The next day, I made him put his cap back on and take a "graduation photo" in front of the message. I think it was the perfect way to give him a laugh and show him how aware and proud we are of his hard work, and also reflect the strange unique time it is right now in the world as we find creative ways to stay safer at home but still work and connect and celebrate. Thank you Christine and Balloon City! I highly recommend giving a call for any event. Don't be like me and wait until the night before, though, because if you want to spell out your love for someone in Boston, you want to give them time to order some back-up letters!
