Somewhat utilitarian (it'll take you across the Kalamazoo river to the lakefront side of Saugatuck where you can then walk to Oval beach, Mt. Baldhead, etc) and back again. It's not particularly efficient or technologically advanced (it literally crosses the river by pulling a chain it's tethered to the whole way). It's just a pretty, historic looking boat that just goes back and forth all day long. I realize sometimes it can be slow, or staff is less than engaged but IDK, I'm a history nerd and I can't help but love it. Cash only, I believe. So hit that ATM before you embark on your journey.

Had a terrible experience yesterday. We took the ferry to go to Mt Baldtop, noting the ferry closed…read moreat 3 pm so we made sure to make it back before it closed, Our bikes were locked in downtown Saugatuck. We returned to the ferry to go back at 245 pm and at that point we saw the ferry staff walking away from the ferry to the nearby building. Surely they would come back, right? More people gathered waiting to return, and there were six of us, confused why it had stopped prior to its posted closing time at 3 pm. Then we saw a ferry worker come back and go onto the boat. Nice, they are returning.. after we waved to him, yelled for his attention, he finally acknowledged us, said sorry, he couldn't come get us (mind you, it was 'still' before 3 pm, and the whole thing would have taken just minutes) I called the number of the place that runs the ferry and they said 'sorry they closed a a couple minutes early because they didn't see anybody' - They didn't close a couple of minutes early, they closed 15 minutes early, and they did see us, even yelled back to us (finally) but said they wouldn't come get us. Getting lied to that 'they didn't see us' and 'they closed a few minute early' when they closed 15 minutes early, on a beautiful sunny weekend day, even though he saw us before 3 pm. Yes there is other transportation back, but it cost us a big chunk of time and left us with a bitter taste in our mouth about this amazing city.

Coming from…read moreChicago I'm not thrilled with the Holland bus system, but realistically they do the best they can for a small town with limited public interest in using public transportation. Over the last 5 years or so MAX has certainly improved by adding more fixed bus routes and I thank them for that. My only gripe would be that a couple of times the drivers have seemed very insistent that nobody could be standing while the bus is moving. I understand they don't want anybody to get hurt during sudden stops, but come on in major cities all over the U.S. people do stand on moving busses every day and survive just fine. I'm not opposed to sitting on a bus, but if I (I'm not the smallest person around) have a choice or standing and having a bit of breathing room or sitting and being crammed in next to another person I'll choose standing everyday. TIP: If you have a red, white and blue medicare card showing you receive Medicare benefits you can ride the fixed route busses for free so that's a nice money saver. Just show the bus driver your red, white and blue medicare card and ride to your destination for free. I know this is the case on the fixed route busses, but I do not know if it's the same on the reserved MAX busses or not.

My comments are regarding the 2 Harbor Trolley lines that operate during the Summer in the Spring…read moreLake/Ferrysburg/Fruitport/Grand Haven area. The way it is set up is that there are two trolley loops that operate. One on each side of the bridge, but both lines do pick-up and drop off at the Spring Lake Holiday Inn parking lot. So you can transfer there to continue your commute from one side of the bridge to the other. The trolleys cover popular places on each side of the bridge SL loop called Laker stops at North Ottawa Beach, North Ottawa Pier, Coast Guard Park, A La Mode Ice Cream and Pamona Park. The GH loop called Bucaneer stops at Grand Haven State Park and the City Beach. There is no cost to the riders. The service runs all day and into the evening. Now on paper this all looks great. You can get from Fruitport to Grand Haven beaches and it is free. Here's the downside....it is not commuter friendly. There is no timetable, no schedule and no driver accountability. This is a tax payer/government funded agency. Non-profit. Here is my story: My group is in Fruitport and decide we want to visit the GH beach. Someone suggests we take the trolleys. We head over to Pamona Park. We ask someone there how often the trolley comes by. We're told about every hour. We then asked did you see it when it last came by? She says it was there about 45 minutes ago when she arrived at the park. So we thought we'd only have to wait 15 minutes. Unfortunately we had to wait 40 minutes. When we were seated in the air conditioned vehicle I asked the driver how long a loop takes, he says the SL route is about an hour. When I told him we thought we were there more than an hour, he explained he "took a break." I also asked is there any timetable, he casually explained...."no, it's just when we get the loop completed. Sometimes we take a break and sometimes we break off the loop, so times vary. Okay, I'm used to public transportation in Chicago, GR and Detroit where drivers do their best to stick to a timetable. Not here apparently. From the park to A La Mode, the ride was probably 10 minutes. I then asked when we will be at Holiday Inn so we could transfer to the other trolley. He said probably 30 minutes. It was at that point we decided to walk to Holiday Inn instead. It took us about 12 minutes or so to hike over the SL bridge and wait for the Grand Haven trolley. Half hour later a trolley finally shows up. Only thing....it was the trolley we were on 30 minutes ago! We talked to our driver and he said "Grand Haven should be there shortly." Another 20 minutes goes by and the GH trolley finally shows up. We ride it into Grand Haven, it stops at the State Park and then our destination the city beach. Total travel and wait time: 2 hours! We took an Uber back.

The Carroll Avenue Station on the South Shore Line is the quintessential small-town train stop. I…read morewould call it a station, and it technically is, but you hardly realize it when you're here. Everything about the station makes you think it's 1936. There's the tiny building filled with uncomfortable chairs. There's the ticket agent who's neither friendly nor rude. There are the tearful reunions at the tracks. OK, I made that last one up, but tearful reunions in the muddy parking lot doesn't sound right. One time when I was visiting South Bend, the train schedule worked out (or didn't work out) so that I wouldn't be able to get all the way to South Bend in time to spend time with my dear friend Jen W. So she very generously offered to meet me in Michigan City. This was when Indiana still didn't have Daylight Saving Time (and it was confusing because the state has two time zones, and one of them does change), and because my friend lived in Granger, she got here an hour early. Our reunion was grand, and teary on her end. We were so engrossed in our conversation that we didn't realize she had made a wrong turn on the way back to South Bend. I really like this station, especially because it reminds me of Jen W. and our Michiana misadventures. OK, they weren't misadventures, but alliteration is fun when you're in the Midwest. Oh, and for you geography buffs, Michigan City, Indiana, is not in the region known as Michiana. How ridiculous is that? About as ridiculous as East Chicago being in Indiana, I would say.

(i was alone) i had to solve the situation myself and luckily the guy was nice left me alone when i said i wasnt interested. idk if she thought i was an adult or something or just didnt care, but i visually look very young, like 14. i have slanted eyes, round face (im overweight) and i was wearing scooby doo pajamas. on top of that i had my backpack when i entered which had toys dangling from it. thought it was weird but she probably doesnt get paid enough for that so whatever. place can have some shady people there so be alert and keep your stuff near you within your line of sight. i love south bend though and it was my first time there and the view was nice so only a 2/5 for me.

The…read morestop is easy to find, there is plenty of parking, and the area is safe so you won't have to worry about leaving your car for the weekend. If your train is running late or you arrive early, the beach on Lake Michigan is within 5 minutes walking distance. So you can park your car at the train stop and walk down to the beach. There are some nice restaurants and stores to go to as well.
