Now I have ridden the bus line here in south bend ( they only named it transpo in , like, 1975, or so)., since 2nd grade, so that would be, hmmmm, lemme think, about 1969,so I think I can have a very valid comment on them today. My , granted, back then, a child could ride the bus for a kids token, which was 2 for a quarter (!!! I KNow!!!!). which I did, from the Notre Dame library circle to my school, St. Josephs on Hill street. Now back then the buses were diesel and smokey and loud and stuff, but it was cheap, and if you were a regular rider, you eventually had some type of rapport with the driver, who was the same guy if you rode the bus at the same time each dad. Then, I started to go to a different school, Our Lady of Hungary, over on Calvert, in Rum Village.By this time, they had raise the price to .35, so it was still doable. Only now, I would take the Notre Dame bus from the circle, to the bus terminal, or big lot, it really was not a station, just a parking lot with lines on it, no where to go if it got cold, and I would have to board the Rum Village bus. Oh, by the way, now when I got on the ND bus, I would ask for a transfer, which meant that my ride could continue on another bus, from the main bus are, for NO CHARGE. See, I would pay my .35 as I got on the bus at nd, get a transfer from the driver, get off at the end of that bus' route, the downtown "bus station", and get on the Rum Village bus with my transfer, to get me to school every day. The same thing in reverse to get home. Well, the fares kept rising with the times, .50, then .75, now, a dollar. Ok, that fair, I guess. But now 2 months ago they took away the transfers!!!!!! Now it costs 2 fares to get across town, or to school, or to work, or where ever. And, they keep getting a new "garage" for their buses every 7 years. No Transpo is crap now, they station they have is riddled with crackheads and drunks and junkies hanging out, it is where the winos would hang out back in the early '70s. Great they have a few natural gas buses, but, c'mon, NO TRANSFERS! I will never ride Transpo again. read more
