I went here for lunch today after a WIU student told me he ate a sandwich here that turned his terrible day around, and was coming back for more. "Best sandwich of my life" he said! Say no more, I went ten minutes later. Bread is made fresh, in house, baklava is made in house too. I had the tuna fish salad and it was super good. Loved the selection of chips. We stopped in here on recommendation from friends before a campus tour of Western Illinois University (right across the street). We got a gyro, a roast beef sub and a baklava. Food was seriously great! Ray and his wife were so nice and welcoming and obviously put a lot of care and effort into the food. These people are rude and have no business running a business especially in a college town. The owner acts intimidating and is very surly. The food is sub-par on most days. Rarely do you get something edible. There is barely any meat or cheese on the subs and the pita for the gyro is like biting through shoe leather. Save your time and your money. Go where they appreciate their customers as this "establishment" clearly does not. Twenty years ago this would be a five star review, but my how things have changed. They used to pile on the toppings and now they are unbelievable cheap with them. All you get is bread, one thin layer of meat that is about the same quality as Karl Buddig lunch meat from Aldi's, and some attitude with the service. The gyros have about one tenth the meat that even a cheap gyro would have in any city and they microwave the meat instead of shaving it off the spit and/or grilling it. It tastes like garbage, so I guess maybe it is good they don't give you enough of it. Best to avoid this place and the mean spirited owner who blames the customer instead of apologizing and making things right. Macomb is so limited in its food choices it is a shame a once decent place and regular part of my college years has become so bad over time. read more

This used to be a favorite spot of mine, unfortunately, the quality and service has gone WAY down, while the prices have gone up. The last time I went in, I spent an obscene amount of money on a steak sub. It was mostly bread, with minimal toppings. I wish I would have taken a picture to show how poorly it was proportioned. I have not been back since, it has gone downhill significantly, which is unfortunate. If you are looking for a nice sandwich try Palermos instead-they appreciate the business and treat their customers accordingly. read more

This place is literally across the street from Western Illinois University which is a dream location for a business in a town like Macomb. Last time I was there it was lunch time on a week day, but the line was small and moved really fast. The person taking orders had military precession or something. I think she was the owner. The interior is very plain, but there were more than enough tables. I saw some pinball or arcade games in the back, but didn't check to see if they worked. Cool throw back to my childhood. The bread is baked fresh and it was amazing. Kind of sweet, but in a good way and soft. I ordered a regular sandwich and even through it was good I wish I'd taken longer to look at the menu. They also have lots of interesting Mediterranean meals I want to try, like the hummus veggie pita wrap, feta cheese wrap, or stuffed grape leaves. Not things you see very often! The parking lot is very small, maybe 5 spaces tops, but there's a residential area behind the shop if that parking ever fills. They also deliver and it was surprisingly cheap; maybe even $1. When I went to Western, everyone raged about ISS .. i'm not sure why. There is really nothing special about their sandwiches, but I guess since there's not much to choose from in Macomb, ISS is one of the few options.. AND mostly anything begins to taste better after months of cafeteria/union food. The shop itself is nothing special either.. The owner is so rude and impatient with customers. Everytime I've had to order with him I end up wanting to hang up and never order again. I swore I wouldn't order after the last time he was awful, but I went ahead and thought I would give it another try as it's been a few months. Nothing has changed. This time I did end up hanging up and I will never order there again. His employees are nice but he is a total jerk and doesn't deserve business. Owners can be very rude to customers. Owner took my order, then messed up making my sandwich, then was angry at me for messing up the order. He grumbled and moaned while remaking my sandwich. The wife can be just as bad as well. The food is good and they deliver. Very different from what you get at Subway or Jimmy Johns. read more

You are better off to stick with Jimmy Johns for cold cuts. The service wasn't great. No one had gloves. We happened upon this place while in town for a tournament. I wish they had a location in St. Louis! The bread is soft and delicious and pairs perfectly with the meat and cheeses. I am being generous with the 4 star review. I enjoyed my sub, but it was late night and I probably would have enjoyed anything after the amount of cheap Macomb liquor that was consumed. All of my friends who went to school here raved about it, so we gave it a whirl. The subs weren't cheap, but the ingredients were pretty good. Having lived in macomb through high school ISS was a regular staple. (MHS grad of 90). Mondays have been Italian Special special day for as long as I can remember. Whenever I am back in town I stop by for the Italian Special. It's the special sauce and bread that make this sandwich so awesome. It hasn't changed at all and now my kids love it too. I agree that the prices are a bit high. But, that hasn't stopped me from getting my fav sub there every time I'm in Macomb. read more

I was a student at WIU in the 80's & LOVED to est at ISS. After I graduated, I wasnt able to return to WIU for many years. Horrible experience. Order a gyro expecting an excellent sandwich as they advertise being made fresh with fine ingredients. When I ordered, I watched the employee grab a sandwich bag of steak meat and proceed to throw it in the microwave to ZAP IT. Then put the meat into a store bought pita wrap that tasted like it had sat around for centuries. In conclusion, I did not eat more than one bite of the gyro that cost me almost $9. I could have bought 2 of these for that price at ANY decent gyro shop! The owners are very rude and do not seem to understand United States customs/cultures. Overall HORRIBLE place to eat. I have never been so displeased with service. Their sandwiches are great, when they are made right, but if you have a complaint, be prepared to be yelled at. I brought back a sandwich that was poorly made, and the owner yelled and argued with me, claiming I had dropped the sandwiches. Never in my life have I been talked to in such a way by management. When I made a sarcastic remark about their "wonderful customer service," they took it as a compliment. After an owner grabbed some cheese off my sandwich (with her bare hands) and threw it back on, I lost my appetite. It's safe to say that I will NEVER be ordering from ISS again. Decent sandwiches I suppose different than subway but nothing to write home about. The owner is another matter though. Wife and I met there and had sandwiches, spent about $20, left to go get her daughter from a music lesson at the university and came back to find the owner had called a tow truck to take my car away. We were only gone 20 or 30 minutes tops and they weren't busy at all. Would have cost me $185 if I had not shown up when I did.
