We unknowingly arrived 30 minutes before close, but the staff was super nice and welcomed us in with no rush. It was still pretty full inside and made for a nice, chatty place to go with family or friends. We started with coffee before ordering the garden frittata and the biscuits and gravy. The coffee was actually very good- they had a seasonal hazelnut flavor that I really enjoyed. I was expecting the frittata to be fluffy like a quiche, but it was more like a circular shaped veggie scramble. It was pretty standard, but definitely hit the spot. The sourdough bread served alongside was outstanding, however. It tasted super fresh and very homemade. The biscuits and gravy were very flavorful and not too greasy. Indeed, I'd dined at the Packinghouse back in 1986. They've been open since 1978, and I recognized it immediately. Then, as now, the place looks the same and the food was remarkable. My co-star and I sampled the inviting salad bar, and he opted for the broiled steak covered in mushrooms. I had the shrimp scampi, which was spectacular and enough for two normal people. Our only disappointment was that the highly touted bread pudding had been exhausted. Hence, we settled our stomachs on the chocolate lava conflagration that helped put things into perspective. The ambiance was an interesting mix of nostalgia and packing plant apparatus. Being a vegetarian, I wasn't offended by what happened there since 1912. The still-active railroad station is just across the street, which made sense for the building's original purpose. Our server was a local historian who enhanced our visit with her perspectives. Yes, the HOJO where I stayed in 1986 is long gone, but the Packinghouse is still doing what it does best. I must also mention that downtown Galesburg is an inviting anachronism reflecting the old America that I grew up with. There are interesting stores and other attractions. Galesburg is also home to Knox College, and was the venue for one of the Lincoln-Douglas debates back when debates were really debates and not Kabuki Dances.

I decided to try this place because of all the positive reviews, and it did not disappoint. My meal was delicious, the atmosphere relaxing, the service impeccable, and the owners are charming. Be cause of my great experience, I returned the following evening. My second meal was just as good as the first. Whenever I am in Fort Madison again, I will definitely have dinner at Simple Table by Hitomi. An excellent find!
