I've been to a handful of nail salons around the Peninsula, and this was the worst service I've received so far. My entire pedicure, including polish, took about 35 minutes total. Three customers who were already there before I arrived were still not finished by the time I left, so there was a very noticeable difference in the amount of time and attention spent on my service. The person doing my pedicure spent much of the time watching TV. The "massage" had almost no pressure and felt more like very slowly touching or rubbing my feet rather than actually massaging them. The exfoliation was also extremely quick and barely removed any of the dead skin from my feet. Meanwhile, I could clearly see the people beside me receiving much more thorough service. I don't expect every pedicure to take exactly the same amount of time, but the difference in the level of care and attention was very noticeable. Maybe I just didn't receive their usual level of service, but based on my experience, it was extremely disappointing. read more

I've been here twice for gel pedicures and only had good experiences especially for the price. Massage is nice, the vibe is chill, it doesn't have that chemical smell. They are gentle and everything is autoclaved. I know nail salons can be hit and miss even at the same location depending on who does it. Vivian did my nails last time, I forgot who did it this time, but both were well done, and they have a lot of regulars who come in which always speaks to a job well done and consistency. Despite their overall rating I would give them a try. And if you know you're the kind of person who is exquisitely precise, there are plenty of salons in the area who will charge you $300 for a mani pedi and I'm sure do an exceptional job. For those of us just looking for a chill normal experience, this place is great. read more

I came here upon walking in I said 2 pedicures and 1 gel mani.. there was only 2 employees. I asked how long the wait was and the lady said "right now". I was seated and while the lady was finishing up my pedicure 2 other ladies with appointments walked in and I was told I will have to come back tomorrow for my nails.. my bf that was also going to get pedi did not get his pedicure. Had I known I would have went somewhere else where I can get both done and both of us will receive service.. The massage was horrible she literally just rubbed the stone on my skin no pressure what so ever. She painted my nails and cut but not even clean. Don't come here.. it's a waste of time and money. First time here. I went in with my mom to get a mani and pedi. Pro: nice cozy vibes with beautiful Christmas decor. clean. Good location right in the middle of Downtown san mateo. The lady who did my pedicure was nice ...Henna? However ...the one who did my mom was RUDE and lazy! she was cutting my mom off everytime my mom was saying something and she acted as if she didn't want to do my mom nails. We asked her for acrylic nail removal but she says there's no need to remove just fill. You don't tell a customer what YOU feel like doing. After she was done with my mom's nail she just walk off and went to another person without even saying thank you or goodbye. We will not be returning because of her. I had been a loyal customer of InStyle for the last 5 years. Josie (the former owner) and her sister Vanessa were wonderful and always performed high quality service. I called to make an appointment just the other day with Vanessa who has been my nail tech for two years. First, I was informed she had suddenly retired and then I was told by a different person that she still worked there? Which is it? I was very disappointed by the lack of information and care that I was given over the phone. I would suggest going to a new salon and not supporting the new owners. read more

I had long beautiful toe nails previously and came in, asked her NOT to cut it please just shape it square.............maam?? What shape is this and WHY IS IT SO SMALL!? I went in for gel manicure and pedicure for $70 I was told. Once seated the person assisting me wanted to raise the price $15 and charge me $85 so I got discouraged and wanted to go somewhere else. I decided to stay but regretted!!! the gel manicure was done by Josie (owner) she did a poor job!!! she was dealing with other customers in between so I ended up with one coat of gel polish on one hand. not good quality gel polish either, starts to peel off within a week. I did want to make a comment about some of the other reviews that I have read here.... I noticed they have mentioned that the jell nails did not last. If you have your hands in water often or use hand lotion, it is best to wear rubber gloves while doing dishes and do not leave your nails moist for extended amounts of time. If you are using lotions, be sure to wash and dry the tips of your nails after applying. Jell polish should last 2 to 3 weeks if you care for them properly. Best regards. read more

This was my first time at this salon, and made a reservation ahead of time. I definitely needed a break from work and it was all worth the time I spent here. When I got in I was quickly seated with Josie. She's incredible! When choosing my Gel nail color, (and they have a wide selection to choose from) I was stuck between two shades of gray. Her and her staff gathered around and even debated which color goes well with my skin. Honestly, either would've came out great. After she painted my nails and set them with a matte finish, I was expecting to be done. Then she gave me a neck massage and hand massage with warmed lotion. UGH!! Ok, so they raised their price from $35 to $40 for mani pedi in the last two weeks...and they do give a good mani-pedi, for the most part. The massage was short, not very good, and left me going "huh? was that it? Like rub rub done." Then when I gave the woman $60 and asked for $13 back...and she only gives me $10 back, so I ask for $13 back again...and she just looks at me...ya. I REALLY wanted to love it here but had to go back after 2 days to fix chipped gel nail polish. This is a week later AFTER having it redone again. Sigh... I don't have time to take care of it. It was time for a manicure which I don't do on a regular basis. I was in down town San Mateo and thought I would try this place as a close friend of mine goes there all the time. Over the past year I have tried several places for manicures and all of them are either dirty, they barely speak English, not friendly and so on. It's nice to say that I was pleasantly surprised. In Style was very clean! The gal who did my nails was quite nice and very detailed about her work. They also give a neck and shoulder massage which hurt a little but I thought it was a nice add to the service. My nails look great. Also they took me as a walk in without any hassle. Price wise, this place in my opinion is very reasonable. I paid 20.00 including tip. (no polish for me as I tend to wreck them very fast. The only downside was that they don't take Visa. Update note: they do NOT take credit cards even though it says so on Yelp. They should at least get a Square. I'm going to get my friend a gift certificate for her services and need to go back because I didn't have that much cash on me. I will still keep going to my favorite place, Avant Garde for my pedis though. No place beats their expertise, cleanliness standards, friendliness and professionalism. They are expensive and they are worth every penny. But for a quick manicure I would definitely go back to In Style. read more

Pricey pedicure....they did a decent job but for $28 ($4 for frenched) seems a little steep Granted this is the first time my legs were massaged with warm rocks which was different. They take their time with pedicures & also offer fragrance soap scrubs when getting a pedicure - my favorite is cherry blossom. I got a mani/pedi for $40 today. Overall, I'm happy about my decision to go here for the first time because: -the hot stones during the pedicure felt great. Not sure what their benefits are? Or if they do it long enough?! But nevertheless, it feels great. -the extra attention they give to exfoliation during the pedicure. Seriously, they scrub like crazy. Not shy at all. Love it. However there are some quirks: -CASH ONLY, please minimally get Square, I literally had to go to the Wells Fargo across the street and withdraw cash, in my salon paper sandals -could have been a bit more detail oriented on the polish job. Eh this place is okay. Nothing spectacular.. even after eight years. I came in for nails instead of an eyebrow wax bc it was down the street from where we were having dinner. My friend's mom comes here all the time and has fabulous nails, so why not? Cool - lots of colors and types of polish to choose from. Not cool - the staff thought our appointment was at 4 but it was 4:30 pm and pretty much wasn't happy with us when we walked in. Cool - big ijoy massage chairs. Not cool - big ijoy massage chairs that didn't really massage. Cool - lady walked in for a gel manicure- they take walk ins! Not cool - I waited 10 minutes to have someone turn the water on for me in the spa chair and then 20 more minutes for someone to actually work on my pedicure .. feet were prunes. Then she said they were short staffed ... to work on someone who had an appointment versus the walk in!?!!? Cool - feet cleaned up well, didn't hurt. Leg massage felt nice. Not cool - waited another 20 minutes for my manicure after I said I'd just skip it bc we had dinner reservations and the lady said she'll do it fast, including my neck massage - which was not relaxing. Cool - cash and check only - there's a bank across the street so you can get cash. Not cool - when asked if they took credit card, the lady said cash or check only but then gel manicure customer paid with credit card. Cool - nice mix of music in the background. Not cool - music stops at 5:30 pm. I get it, everyone is just trying to make money and sure, why not take another client for more money. How about no bc you know you are short staffed and have four appointments that you took in and only have three people working. Just not cool that we were treated unfairly. Maybe they were just having a bad day. Would I return? Probably not since there are SO many more nail places in the area - but if you ever need a quick gel manicure, they take walk ins. read more
