Checked in here but looks like it's shutdown and location has been repurposed. There wasn't any signage.

This was a great market, and members of my family enjoyed it for generations; however, it closed at least two years ago.

Normally I go straight for brisket or ribs, but they told me they're known for their burnt ends, so I decided to try the burnt ends plate. After I paid and sat down for a bit, they came back and told me they had run out of burnt ends. They offered to substitute another meat and refund the difference. I switched to brisket and told them not to worry about the refund. To their credit, they gave me whatever burnt ends they had left along with the brisket, which I appreciated. Unfortunately, the meat itself was disappointing. At first glance, the brisket did not look promising. The slices were very lean with almost no visible fat, no smoke ring, no pink, just gray-brown throughout. The bark was minimal and patchy. It looked dry before I even took a bite, and it ate exactly how it looked. The meat was firm, tight-grained, and lacked moisture. I ended up having to drink water between bites and could only finish about half before taking the rest home. The burnt ends weren't much better. They were dark and sauced on the outside, but they also leaned dry instead of tender and juicy. Not the rich, sticky, melt-in-your-mouth burnt ends I was hoping for. I got baked beans and potato salad for sides. I'm not sure if they make them in-house or if they're premade, but they were decent. Not amazing, not bad. They just didn't make up for the meat. I really wanted to like this place, especially after they recommended the burnt ends so confidently. I appreciate that they tried to make it right when they ran out, and that was good customer service. But at the end of the day, barbecue lives and dies by the meat, and this just didn't deliver.

The food was amazing and service was fast and friendly. They also offer freshly butcher beef and pork that looks INCREDIBLE! I also tried the Texas Caviar which was good but not really my style. 5/5 stars, will absolutely be back!

This is the way that BBQ should hit!!…read more We stopped in the "Shack" while visiting Durham. Having been huge fans of North Carolina style BBQ, we were not disappointed. My wife and daughter enjoyed the Pork Plate. By for me, I went with the two meat combo with Pulled pork and brisket. The pulled pork was spot on. It was perfectly smoked and almost melted in my mouth. With a touch of spicy vinegar sauce, I was gone to Carolina in my mind for the rest of the day. The brisket might have been some of the best I've ever had. It had a nice fat layer and was also "melt in your mouth" and juicy. The brisket didn't need any sauce at all. It was that good. The hushpuppies were the star at the table. My family considers themselves to be connoisseurs of hush puppies, and these were ranked in the top five. A respectable ranking from such a discriminating hushpuppy panel. The sides we sampled included collard greens, mac and cheese and BBQ beans. The collards and Mac and cheese were out of this world. I should have ordered a double serving of the collards. However, the beans were a huge disappointment. They were more like a bowl of sub-par chili than BBQ beans. If we return, they will not be selected. A great BBQ spot when you are in Durham. Highly recommend you stop by, if only to taste the brisket!

Excellent selection of Arab / Middle Eastern / Mediterranean / Asian goods. They have a great variety of both the standard staples, such as chick peas, bread, seasonings, yogurts, cheeses, frozen goods, and other raw or prepared ingredients, but also have more nuanced items you might not have seen in a long time had you grown up elsewhere and moved to the US. I don't have to go and order things online anymore. Additionally they have a butcher that has fresh meats that are also halal if you're Muslim. I haven't ever had their meats, and am not Muslim, but I know where to go if I need lamb or goat on special occasions. They don't really have produce beyond some shelf stable items, but that excluded, it's pretty much an oasis. Finally, the store is kept clean, well stocked, and organized. I've never been in there with items I need missing. They recently did a facelift on the front of the store and it looks awesome, very modern and inviting. The owners and their sons are super friendly, extremely kind, even offering to special order things I ask about, and are always in a helpful / cheerful mood! Would HIGHLY recommend stopping in to anyone looking for things they need, or just wanting to see what a Middle Eastern store looks like!

Even a month ahead of time, so good luck). But don't let it stop you if you don't have reservations, just be smart. We've learned to arrive when they open, because the bar and the high-tops in the bar area are all first-come first serve. There are times we've had just drinks and an appetizer/rolls or dessert. Other times we've gone for a full meal. Most recent visit was Saturday before an 8pm show at DPAC, and I heard words that I've never heard before that made me love them even more. "We will hold your leftovers for you until after the show". Uh, big heart for me! And smart for them, because we would not have ordered dessert otherwise, and I would have been sad to have had to waste even a bite of my fave, the roast chicken. Husband declared his "wedge" salad and filet to be perfection, and nothing makes him happier than a couple Dirty Durham's, while I can always find a nice glass of wine. We tried the Apple Crisp for dessert along with a couple coffees, and it was the perfect ending to a wonderful meal. The Service was also terrific, as always. Always. And sure enough, my leftovers were bagged up and ready and waiting when we got out of the show. Just when I thought they couldn't possibly get better, they did.

I arrived as soon as the doors opened at 4pm on a cold & windy Sunday. Dining at Nana Steak was a last minute decision and I didn't have a reservation. The bar area is first come, first served. The actual bar filled up really quickly, but I was able to grab a 4 top table even though I was a party of 1. Nana Steak has an intimate and welcoming vibe and the service is amazing. Jared was my server and he was the best!! I started with the soup of the day, cream of spinach. The flavor was awesome, and as Jared mentioned, it wasn't a heavy creamy soup, it was light and delicious. For my entree I ordered the 6 oz Filet medium, it was cooked perfectly and had the best flavor. I didn't really need a knife it was so tender. For my side, I chose the potato puree (mashed potatoes) and they were like whipped silk, and seasoned perfectly. I made sure to save room for dessert and I'm so glad I did. The chocolate silk pie complimented my glass of red wine perfectly. I ate every bite. I definitely recommend dining at Nana Steak, make a reservation if you can. I hear the cheeseburger and the rolls are both delicacies, they only make a certain amount a day. Make sure you ask your server about the specials of the day that aren't on the regular menu.

In the case of Succotash we feel we have found the holy grail... Friendly, knowledgeable waitstaff? check Homey and a little funky atmosphere? check cool soundtrack? check BUT what about the food? We first came for brunch... I had the 'Brisket and Grits'. It was a very tender brisket with cheesy, garlicky grits, scallions with fried egg. The best part? They drizzle some of the brisket gravy over the grits... Oh man this was delish. We got talking about South Louisiana food with our server and he told us they bring in Leidenheimers french bread from New Orleans for their po-boy's. What's the big deal? ...I'll tell you! The bakery was founded in 1896 and it is the ONLY bread that marks a true po-boy to New Orleans natives. Why? Because of it's unique texture. Their loaves have a pillowy soft interior and a crunchy crust that isn't found in most french breads. It's the gold standard for po-boys. So today, I came back to Succotash for an Oyster po-boy. And the Verdict? Five stars mon ami! Leidenheimers bread with a very generous amount of perfectly fried oysters. ...I like mine simple with just lettuce, tomato and a little hot sauce. This was I can honestly say, the very best oyster po-boy I have found outside of NOLA. ... so yeah, I've found a new home... thanks and a tip o' the hat to Chef Juan DiGiulio and the great staff he has brought together!
