My fiance and I stayed two nights and wished we had two more. You are steps away from the river and you hear the fish jumping all night. If you are a fisherman, this is the place for you! The bed was like sleeping on a cloud and everything was so clean and nice!!! We will be staying again!

We'd been desperate to get out of the…read morecity for a while, so we packed the car & our little rescue-mutt & headed away into the wilderness for our 18th anniversary. The Miner's Cabin offered a perfect, romantic, rustic retreat for us. You should think of your stay there as, "glamping". The cosy, one-room-loft-bedroom cabin is clean and basic, the structure itself, utterly charming. The bathroom is but a toilet, the entire room the shower cubicle & it's VERY clean, but most bathing happened in the river, shh, I'm not gonna lie. The cabin's heart is the pretty balcony that looks out over the crystal-clear river, where we spent a lot of our time relaxing and cooking. The kitchen is only a small bar fridge (though they do provide a large ice chest with ample space - just don't forget to buy ice), a sink, a microwave, toaster oven & an electric frying pan. Being outdoors folks though & a cook, we came prepared. I brought a portable gas burner which made the balcony a charming spot to fry up the beautiful, Steelhead Trout I was catching (FANTASTIC fishing). We ate meals out there too, to the majestic view of the river, the mountains & the pines, immediately before us. I also brought my cast iron dutch oven & used the wonderful, functional fire pit/ BBQ down on the river rock patio to roast vegetables in the fire. If you are wise about when to open and close windows at appropriate parts of the day, the Miner's Cabin stays wonderfully cool, even in the hottest of summer days as we experienced at around 103F. I think we used the swamp cooler once for an hour out of curiosity for what it may do. At night, the incredibly comfortable loft bed was heaven. We'd open up the pretty gable windows and enjoy the cool, evening breeze and sound of the lively river. The big house next door, also owned by Heidi, had a large family group staying there. We'd only see them sometimes when we'd use the driveway which is shared. Even with their nearby presence, the cabin felt very secluded. Occasionally folks would float by down the river and you'd share a wave or smile. You can hear the highway which is quite incongruous as you seem so far away from civilization. The river water is incredible. Our dog's coat and our hair and skin have never felt so good from lolling about in the water. Heidi has very detailed instructions and information available on the website and in the email package. Be sure to read them so you know exactly what you're in for and any additional costs like a dog fee etc. All the info you need is there. Heidi is very communicative. If you want the kind of no-frills, communing with nature experience we were after, this place is for YOU!

This was the first sign that I was in for a special treat. As we drove down into the canyon I automatically felt at ease, not only with Dulcy, but with the location as well. Dulcy was right when she said the canyon is a great place for rejuvenation and reclaiming one's life. The location couldn't be more spectacular. The retreat center is surrounded by the walls of the canyon that jut up all around. The seclusion not only removes you from all the hustle and bustle of daily life but it allows for you to be at one with nature. During my stay there, I loved watching the hummingbirds and finches visit the various feeders as well as the bird bath. That in and of itself was a calming experience. The creek is also within walking distance and can be accessed at various points along the trail. Dulcy and her team have worked hard to create multiple spaces for rest and relaxation along the creek where visitors can sit and take in their surroundings. When I first arrived she made sure she took me on a guided tour to familiarize me with the trail and creek. Dulcy is an excellent hostess and my time at the retreat center exceeded my expectations. Her love for the canyon, it's wildlife, and her desire to share it with others really shines through. Thank you Dulcy for such a special experience. I can't wait to come back again!

Our group stayed there at the end of August and it was at least 100 degrees each day. Yes, it cooled off at night but not upstairs in the master bedroom. The small fans and ceiling fan were inadequate to cool this room down, so that made sleeping pretty miserable. The owner has done nothing to upgrade the outside of this home, so it looks like the worst one on the block, but inside is another story. The 3 roll away cots are pretty miserable to sleep on unless you're a small child.

Not only does McCload offer a perfect mix of relaxing/adventuring atmostfere, with it's perfect view of Mt Shasta and so many hiking and biking trails only a few minutes away, but, also, the moment you walk into the house you start to love it. It is an old house, like many others in the town (or city) but so nicely remodeled that makes you feel warm and welcome every minute you are there. It has a very large quicken area with a heating stove that keeps the entire house warm, day and night, and a large and confortable living area. THe 3 bedrooms are ample and confortable too. The view of Mount Shasta from the house is already spectacular and biking around time ad nearby trail is also fun. I also like the fact that the ski park is ony a few minutes away, so it is very convenient.

So, let me start off with a review of the cabin... We REALLY REALLY liked it. It had a cool…read morelayout and was perfectly rustic. There is a really nice table to eat outside and the fire pit was great! I would give the cabin 5 stars. It isn't a luxury cabin and isn't supposed to be. Go to a resort if you're looking for that. Now let me give you a result of the pre-sales. Larry seemed to be very nice. He met me at the cabin and when we were running late getting out of town he was nice when we called him and told him. When we got there he was a really nice guy that obviously took a lot of pride in his cabin. He showed us around and even offered my wife a glass of wine. We thought we had it made! When he left he left both copies of the rental agreement. I guess he realized what happened and turned around and sent his friend in to get his copy. His friend took both copies. That's where things started to go South. When we left, we left the place spotless. All dishes were clean, kitchen was clean, we swept the floors and made the beds. We left the key on the hook and locked the place up tight. A few days later, Larry called me. They couldn't find the key. I told him it was on the hook and he said he'd tell his cleaning lady. I figured I'd get my $150 cleaning deposit back soon. 2 weeks after we rented the cabin I hadn't heard from Larry. I finally called him and was very nice (remember, he was REALLY nice to us when we met). I got a different Larry it seems. He was down right rude! He said "he didn't know if we were going to get the cleaning deposit back." He said we didn't take the garbage out, I told him we did and left it in the can. He said we were supposed to take it home with us. Then he said we didn't make the beds, I said we did, and he said the sheets weren't clean. I told him I didn't know we were supposed to and he tersely replied that "it was in the contract, didn't you read the contract?" I was shocked and a little hurt that he could turn on me and speak to me that way. I guess once he has the $$ the real Larry comes out? I ended up having to file a PayPal dispute for at least part of my cleaning deposit. $150 to take a couple of trash bags out and make 2 beds seems a little steep to me. And the lack of communication and his attitude after I called him certainly earns him 1 star. Stay away from this place!!!
