Drury Scenic Pkwy (which in itself is a scenic byway off…read morethe 101), the Prairie Creek Visitor Center (also known as the Elk Prairie Campground Visitor Center) acts as a central spot to explore the various trails around the old growth redwoods in the area. My wife, her mom, and I spent a bit of time driving the dead end road (Prairie Creek Rd) and found many places where we could park the car and step a bit into the forest to see some great sights. While heading here, we saw a young elk trying to cross the road. It seemed like he was looking both ways and making sure we stopped before heading over to the same area we were going. Once we got to the visitor center, we realized it was still closed so there was no reason to park close to it. Instead, we continued down Prairie Creek Rd to get to the start of the Revelation Trail (at Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, a 0.3 mile loop), which was right off the paved road. We were able to see the Prairie Creek that runs through it, a grassy field that was closed due to wild elk grazing, and the Chimney Tree, hollowed out from fire, but still alive. Mom was able to see all of it (and not to mention, a close up view of an elk), which made this area a great place to visit.

Camp Marigold's garden cottages were perfect and affordable. They are not shiny or new or anything, but they are perfectly functional and well kept and come stocked with a microwave and a fridge. One of the owners even offered to help us cook our dinner and gave us some delicious salmon she had just finished smoking. The cat was friendly though demanding and wanted to hang out with us.

It's got a nice little watering hole where we had some beers and floated around for hours... They got a nice thing going here, everyone knows each and you just get that real sense of community....I honestly don't think I met one unpleasant person in Happy Camp. The nearest bigger town is about an hour in half drive away in Yreka. That's where your gonna find a Walmart where you'll want to stock up on everything because there's only one grocery store for miles and miles and it's a bit pricy. It's not the fanciest of places so if your picky about dust and dirt this probably isn't for you. But if you can just enjoy being out surrounded by nature than I'd recommend it. Overall it was just an awesome experience. There's just nothing remotely like this in SoCal.

"Rated #1 Rural Park on the West Coast" it says. Best use of selective photos, ever. They are cheap, $50 a night, but price isn't everything. The campground area might be OK, but the two cabins they have are downright scary! We stayed in the "Bear Cabin". It was clean, but very small, cramped, the mattress wasn't too bad. Heater didn't work, we turned on the oven on the small electric range. Outside the place is filthy! Old broken down travel trailer & junk Chevy S10 Blazer, with flat tires, stuff piled on it was next to our cabin. Broken steps up from parking spot, with debris laying about, around cabin. I swear I think I smelled meth cooking. We were very concerned about break in of our vehicle. We couldn't leave fast enough Saturday morning. We could hear banjos playing as we drove off....
