A beautiful place with great staff. Ocean views, a pool, gardenia smell throughout. We will be returning for sure. Alex was amazing.

Peaceful, beautiful and relaxing experience! Allie gave me the best service ever and she knew it was my birthday so she really made my experience extra special! I am a local but this was my staycation and just WOW!!

The pelicans came from no were and covered the water!!!

This is a cozy, family friendly Inn! We will be back . The views were breath taken. Very clean and away from the hustle but just walking distance to restaurants and shops if you want them. Gavin and the staff were amazing !!

I love this funky little place. I've been coming here for years - summer and winter. I've brought my daughters here, and now my granddaughters. Not only are you right on the water; listening to the waves at night, but 20 steps from the inn you're on Sunset Cliffs - a remarkable stretch of scenery. Each evening we walk over with a "sundowner" cocktail and - along with the locals - watch the sun set. It is an older property, but don't let that fool you - it is clean and the service is 5 star. And if you like flowers, the grounds are amazing. Their staff are so attentive from finding a pair of binoculars so you can watch for dolphins, to providing aloe vera gel after a sun burn. Last night, my granddaughters and I sat outside enjoying our last night here. The lovely young man at the desk came out and asked if we'd like a little bonfire. He brought out a portable fire pit and even brought the fixings for s-mores. Thank you making such wonderful memories. Perhaps I'll be back. With great grandchildren.

cool old school beach hotel vibe, awesome view of the ocean! I am giving this business a four-star review because the service was first class and the location was incredible. There are definitely some two and three star parts to this hotel though. Two stars for the mattresses. They were as hard as a rock and very uncomfortable. I would also give the HVAC two stars because only one room got any benefit from the air conditioning luckily it was a fairly cool day and it was not an issue. I might have to say the bathroom was a one star. The actual commode might have been one of the smallest toilets I have ever seen. An older person would definitely have a problem getting on and off of it. The swimming pool and patio area were incredible. I could have spent my entire trip sitting back there drinking coffee and just taking in the view. Even with the significant deficiencies I would definitely recommend this hotel and will be back.

Quaint, clean rooms situated right on the ocean. Lovely pool area with chairs to hang out and enjoy the views. Would 100% stay here again

This was the glob of hair that fell out of the towel I was using. It was about quarter-sized.

Our experience at Sunset Cliffs Inn was one of the most disappointing hotel stays we've ever had. What started as an inconvenient night turned into an outright unacceptable series of events that left us certain we will never return--and neither will anyone we know. First, the heating in our room was completely nonfunctional. Despite contacting the front desk, their attempt to solve the issue--a broken space heater--fell flat. Instead, they brought us extra bedding, but when we went to bed we discovered it was a mismatched combination of one comforter and a mattress pad. We tried to make the best of it, but the room remained freezing throughout the night and in the morning. In the morning, things took a turn for the worse. While getting ready to leave, I used a towel provided in the room only to have a giant ball of black hair fall out of it. It was disgusting and completely unacceptable for a hotel charging $300 a night. When we checked out, we shared our complaints with the front desk. The young woman working there was wonderful, sympathetic, apologetic, and initially offered to comp the room entirely. Her approach to customer service was great, and we left feeling that, despite everything, the effort to make things right might bring us back to try again in the future. As we returned to our cars in the parking area, we noticed toenail and fingernail clippings littering the ground next to our vehicle in their parking area which was also gross but we were willing to disregard. But the final insult came when we received a call on our way home. The same front desk employee who had promised to comp our stay called back, embarrassed and apologetic, to inform us that her manager had overruled her decision. Instead of a full refund, we were only offered a 50% discount. This sudden retraction felt like a slap in the face. Initially, we were willing to give the hotel another chance, but this bait-and-switch tactic sealed the deal--we will never stay here again. As locals, we frequently recommend accommodations to both to local and visiting friends and family. Sunset Cliffs Inn has lost not only our business but the trust and business of everyone we could have referred. This experience was beyond disappointing, and I would caution anyone considering staying here to think twice. Subpar maintenance, poor cleanliness, and unreliable customer service should never be part of a $300 hotel stay. Sunset Cliffs Inn failed on all fronts.

Just know... you are paying for the location. The room has no frills but it's clean. There's nothing like this inn- literally cliffside at what has always been, 100%, my most favorite spot in all of San Diego. This Inn has been around a long time and if you judge whether or not you'll stay based on the look of the building itself, you'd be making a mistake I think. I also think the only way to go if you DO stay, is to get the King Suite. That room is the most private and has its own window view to the ocean. To wake up like that was worth all the $$$.

We rented out the Inn at Sunset Cliffs for our wedding weekend 10/14/2023 from Friday to Sunday. Gina and Gavin plus the entire Inn at Sunset Cliffs family truly went above and beyond to help us have the most incredible wedding. From the planning stages early on, Gina helped us with vendor recommendations, staying on track with planning tasks, and building our day of timeline. She provided endless support and kept things organized throughout the entire process and especially throughout the wedding day. Being able to have all our friends and family stay onsite through the entire wedding weekend created the most intimate and memorable weekend. We hosted our wedding welcome event in the pool area the day before our wedding. The ceremony was held on the cliffs just south of the Inn with stunning views. Our reception was held on the property looking out onto the ocean. Being along the cliffs meant we got to have some of the most stunning ocean sunsets in October which made for the most amazing wedding photos. My now husband had the luxury of staying in the Presidential suite with the most stunning ocean views to wake up to on our wedding day. The property of the Inn is meticulously gardened with the most gorgeous rose bushes and landscaping. The Inn provided such a warm, inviting space to celebrate with our families and created everything we could have dreamed of for our wedding day. Even now over a year after our wedding we are still hearing from our family and friends how much they loved our wedding and staying at the Inn. We love that as San Diego locals we can walk along the cliffs now, pass by the Inn and always remember our wedding day! The Inn at Sunset Cliffs will always hold such a special place in our hearts and we can't wait to come back and stay for future anniversaries. Can't recommend more as a place to stay or host your wedding day!

We had such an incredible weekend at Inn at Sunset Cliffs! It is such a dreamy location and the service is above and beyond. What can be better than evenings filled with live music, mini putt-putt challenges, and a staff that treats you like family? This place does it all and then some! Shout out to Gavin and the crew for making this weekend so special! we will absolutely be back!!

We have been meaning to write this review for almost a year and it is LONG overdue. We had our DREAM wedding at the Inn at Sunset Cliffs. Almost a year later, we still hear from family and friends how it was one of the best weddings they have ever been to. We got married last October and had ~80 of our family and friends stay for the weekend at the Inn. The Inn was beautiful, cozy, welcoming, and just perfect for everyone to stay. Getting married just a block down from the Inn was gorgeous and made everything convenient. We also loved how we could pick out caterers and have everything in one place. The staff was also wonderful. We worked with Gina and Gavin before the wedding and they made everything a breeze. Gina was just the best at making sure things went smoothly and great suggestions along the planning process as well. The front desk staff were AMAZING as well, and truly felt like they were there to celebrate our marriage as well. The flexibility of the venue was right up our style and we could not be more thankful. THANK YOU INN AT SUNSET CLIFFS (sorry this review is so late). You made our dreams come true :) ~ Jess & Omeed

I am so happy I found this place via AARP! Located in the heart of the Gaslamp District, I had never heard of this hotel prior to searching. Upon checking in, the desk clerk was very friendly, efficient, and answered any questions that I had. As for the room, he put us up on the top (4th) floor. Room is the perfect size for two people. Very clean, warm, inviting, and has some really cute and convenient amenities such as a pineapple themed USB quad port at the desk, along with a Keurig machine (had I known that I'd have brought my own Starbucks K-cups)! The bed was nice and comfy with lots of soft but supportive pillows and two separate comforter blankets so you're not fighting for covers if you are sharing the bed with someone or your significant other. Bathroom is very modern and clean. A hairdryer is hanging in the bathroom as well. The only item missing was an iron and an ironing board; however, you can request that at the front desk. If you are looking for a hotel with a gym, laundry facilities on site, and a full breakfast buffet or continental breakfast, then this place is not for you; however, if those things don't matter to you {I typically look for those types of hotels during a longer stay) then this hotel is all you need. You also get other unexpected creature comforts such as Starbucks coffee in the lounge along with 4 different blends of water as well as these cute pineapple cookies in the afternoon. Based in Seattle, WA, I am so happy I found this chain as I will be on the lookout and consider staying in other cities. Parking is available in a garage connected to the hotel next door for a fee. Also, bikes are available in the lobby for getting around (not sure if gratis or for a fee). I definitely recommend staying here! One small recommendation for the hotel: provide rooms with a small microwave and mini fridge to reheat leftovers. It all worked out as I gave a homeless guy mine.

I love that the grounds are secure and you can allow your children to go into the courtyard area and play the provided games with peace of mind- knowing that they'll be safe. They provide tons of outdoor seating options and grills for tenants, which makes cooking a breeze. In order to enter from the beach/boardwalk, you must have a room key to enter the premises- another awesome perk. This keeps all the riff-raft out of the area. &At night, they also require a room key to enter through the front of the building- which is a newer feature, and much appreciated. You can leave your beach toys & chairs outside your room without worrying about someone coming to steal it. We have locked our bikes up downstairs in the courtyard area & nobody messes with them. This is such a great place to stay & an amazing tradition that our family has. We look forward to our visit every May!

Location wise, it is in the heart of downtown. Everything is within walking distance. Immediately outside of the hotel, you can get to the Star of India as well as USS Midway museum. Both are must visit places if you are in downtown SD. Little Italy is also just about a 10-minute walk. It is a great place to visit the farmer's market in the morning and explore the food scene at night. Balboa Park and the SD Zoo are also very close and easily within driving distance. In terms of the hotel itself, we had the fortune of being upgraded for free AND given a free late check-out as well. They do have a balcony with a bar and plenty of seating. The balcony has a killer view. I got quite a bit of work done there every morning and it is a great way to start the day. The room itself is spacious and can fit 3-4 people since the couch can be a pullout. That being said, the couch wasn't that comfortable, but I survived without breaking my back. However, it did take me the first night to get used to. The view from the room is a killer and it's hard to get tired of it. All of their rooms face the ocean, so don't worry when you book, you will get a killer view regardless. Breakfast is complimentary, but their breakfast is very average. It is very hectic in the morning and the food is not the best, but it is included in the hotel. If you get tired of the breakfast here, again Little Italy is within walking distance with much better food options in the morning. They also have a tiny gym. It's got a treadmill and dumbbells. They don't have everything, but the equipment was sufficient for what I needed. Parking here can be quite expensive. I believe it was around $35 or $45 per day. But again, the convenient location of this hotel is hard to beat, so I think the parking price is worth it especially since parking is expensive everywhere in downtown SD and also hard to find. Overall, we had a great stay here. I do wish the breakfast was better for the price we are paying per night at the hotel and I wish their pullout couch was a bit more comfy. However everything being considered, I do highly recommend this hotel if you are visiting downtown SD. The location is just way too convenient.

There's also a couple minimarts and food spots including Starbucks located right outside the hotel. The rooftop pool is so amazing. The rooms are beautiful and comfortable, and ours offered a wonderful view of the bay and even the ocean beyond, with a clear view of Point Loma. Down below was Roy's Restaurant and the pool area. While our bay view king room did not have a balcony, the window did have the ability to slightly open if we wanted to hear the sounds or get some fresh air. With the window closed, the room was very quiet, so we had no noise issues. We also didn't hear noise from any neighbors, with the exception of the occasional person talking the hall or letting a room door close. Though the beds were not the most comfortable we've ever had, they were comfortable enough for both of us, though the pillows weren't my favorite because they were the kind of feather pillows you need to bunch up so they aren't too thin. They aren't very soft or spongy. Nonetheless, I was able to sleep on them sufficiently well. We can be a little picky about beds and getting good sleep, and we slept fine. Unfortunately, like many hotels, the sink, toilet, and shower/tub are all in one room, making it less convenient for two people to be doing things at the same time, especially since there is only one sink. There was a decent amount of lighting and space for toiletry items. We had no major complaints about the room, but we did have a broken toilet paper fixture in the bathroom on the wall next to the toilet that resulted in the toilet paper falling on the floor several times. Service was super friendly, but it was difficult to reach the front desk at times without a very long wait on the phone. When I called down to request a luggage rack for the room, I was told someone would bring one up, but it never came. I had to walk to the front desk to ask for one, which was later delivered. They do have an automated attendant that lets you request a limited number of items, and I was able to request a robe for my wife that way. While we were there, the elevators were a problem for a lot of people. For part of the time we were there, some in our tower were not working, causing relatively long waits for the remaining elevators and sometimes multiple stops on the way down or up at peak use times. The hotel said they were working on it, and things did seem to improve a little by the time we checked out. The property itself is beautiful and laid out well for its limited space in this part of town. Once inside, and even outside when walking the grounds near the pool, you are in a bit of a protected oasis that doesn't make you feel like you are sandwiched between the bay and the street out front. We ate outside every day with the conference, and the area we were in was super pleasant. There are a number of restaurants on property, but since we were usually eating with the conference, we didn't have time to try any except for the Marketplace. It was very expensive for most items, but the quality was really good, and we never had much of a wait. They serve Starbucks coffee here, but you can probably save a bit of money if you get that (or mobile order) from the on-site Starbucks, which is in a different part of the building. The food served at the conference was of good quality. If you go to many conferences, you'll find it to be competitive with any of the better resorts, though, in my opinion and as one might expect, it doesn't outshine the Ritz-Carlton or certain J.W. Marriott facilities. The food service staff for the conference were excellent, helpful, and fast. The hotel is in a very convenient area downtown on the bay next to the San Diego Convention Center. Traffic in the short distance between here and the freeway can be bad depending on time of day or events happening at either the convention center, downtown, or at Petco Park, where the Padres play, but the distance is short enough for it not to be much of a headache in most cases. I doubt you'll find very many cities with access this easy from the hotel to the airport and all of the local attractions, including, in this case, the Gaslamp District, Little Italy, Coronado, the bayside attractions, Balboa Park, the San Diego Zoo, and more. Hotel parking is expensive, of course, so if you don't really need a car, I highly recommend using Uber or Lyft or walking to get around to the nearest things. Overall, I would certainly stay here again, and I do highly recommend this hotel if you are attending a conference or vacationing in this part of the city and can afford the price point.

But our first night (with the bad bed) was facing a parking lot and it was like a party was right outside our window till 2am. Overall, good stay. Remodel makes it look new, though tubs show wear.

It was served in a plastic wine cup. A hotel charging overpriced wine and overpriced rooms should at least be able to provide a real wine glass. When checking in, I asked the front desk, since the room wasn't available until 5 PM, does that mean we can check out at 12 PM? The front desk said no, check‑out time is still 11 AM. This is ridiculous and unfair to customers. This hotel is just disappointing. The website's advertising it's not accurately reflect the guest experience, and poor customer service.

I paid an arm and a leg for the room but it was absolutely massive and I had sliding glass doors directly onto my own private patio which was right next to the pool overlooking the ocean, it was really incredible despite how outdated the room felt, somehow the size of the room made it more modern and it felt clean. The people at the front desk were young, fun, outgoing, really friendly and I appreciated that. They told me about some happy hour they were having later in the day and I felt very welcome here unlike other hotels I stayed at in the San Diego area. The bathroom was huge in my room, very weird vibe, like felt cabin-like, I don't know how else to explain it, but it was spacious, big countertop by the sink plenty of room to get ready. The coffee bar had an enormous countertop which was great for keeping all of my things, huge mirrors everywhere too. The bed was really comfortable, again great view outside, awesome staff. It was so nice to be able to walk the boardwalk and pop back in here whenever I needed to grab something or use the restroom. Walking distance to everything. Highly recommend, I would definitely stay here again. But I probably won't because the cost is INSANE. Sorry but it is. Also housekeeping found my jewelry box loaded with jewelry and returned it to the front desk who subsequently shipped it back to my house for me. For a charge of course but I do appreciate the honesty of the staff that goes a long long way! Thank you!!

Three cheers for Sandra and for the Del!…read more Service has gone downhill since Hilton acquired it. But we love this location so much we suck it up now and then to have a little staycation in this magical place. At check in time there was a huge line: the computers had broken! We left our luggage and got a snack at ENO Market. And luckily by the time we finished, the line had cleared and they had brought over extra folks to work reception. We were lucky to get Sandra who normally works at the more upscale Shore House on property. She was very apologetic about the line and also saw that we have stayed here at several times. My sweetie is Hilton Gold and they were initially going to upgrade us from our basic The Views room to a "Victorian room with a view". No thank you! Del veterans know that the historic hotel rooms are small and with no privacy, because of the courtyard. So Sandra looked again and managed to get us a beautiful upgrade to the ocean view room in The Views, which was amazing. So in short an amazing stay after a glitch in the beginning. Sometimes we stay somewhere else "cheaper" in Coronado and then come out and hang here. But this was cheaper than the Coronado Marriott, with a much more amazing view. (last pro tip: service at the hotel can be spotty and the food very expensive if you don't have a credit. ENO market and pizzeria is the best value on property. But if you get Brett as your server at Serea, and sit outside, you are still sure to have a magical time!)

First, the good: The property has been nicely upgraded since I last stayed here in 1978…read more Now the rest. We checked in at 5pm. Thankfully the line was not long but the process takes a while so you can still wait 10 minutes even if you are first in line. The clerk was very nice but I could sense she was going to shaft us and sure enough we ended up in a tiny room that was down a long corridor with a view of nothing but rooftops. Probably one of the worst rooms in the hotel and maybe used to house the maids but now sold as a regular room to maximize revenue. So naturally we marched back to the front desk and thankfully found another clerk who could not have been more wonderful. Shocker, she was unable to find anything else that night (800 rooms, 5pm checkin, nada) but was able to convince the manager to let us upgrade the following day to a higher category room for $75/night (regularly $225). Of course this means packing up after one night and checking into a new room but we decided to do it because the first room was so mediocre. The next morning we stopped at the front desk at noon and were surprised and delighted to find the new room ready. It was like night and day - about 2x-3x larger with an elevated sitting area, a couch, and a sea view even though it was not ocean front. Well worth the upgrade fee though kind of sad that you have to pay extra just to get yourself removed from the worst ROH. Not that everything was perfect - the following morning we were awakened to children running wild in the room above ours (apparently a special turret room or something) - it was so bad that I had to knock on the door and was greeted by a displeased parent who apologized and said they were checking out. Bueno. Don't come to this hotel enjoy the water. The ocean is polluted by sewage from TJ and not recommended for bathing. The next day we arrived at the pool only to find it was closed for the day after a child had exploding diarrhea. So much for that. Someone asked management if they could use the special spa pool reserved for mucky mucks but was told that was off limits. On the plus side beach drink service was excellent, but $8 for a diet coke plus a mandatory service charge seems excessive. Similarly I think it was $25 for a cookie and a couple of soft drinks at the lobby snack shop. I was tempted to buy a yogurt parfait but I could not justify it as the cups were only half filled. It is one thing to gouge customers, quite another to cheapen the product. For those who want to save $$ there is a chipotle across the street from the property where you can get large soft drinks (and return for free refills, as the cashier explained) for $3. If you plan to spend all your time at the resort, save yourself the parking gouge by taking a $31 rideshare to/ from the airport. Overall I can say that the staff was very nice, the bar area is fun and the food served at the hotel restaurants is excellent. However I do not plan to return as there are so many properties in San Diego that have nicer rooms, nicer pools and nicer beaches for a fraction of the price.
