I loved staying here! It's right on the beach! Staff were friendly and helpful. Our only problem was with the toilet, and they took care of that promptly. The price was very reasonable compared to other hotels near the beach. There is an additional fee ($37.50, I think) for using the private parking lot. We did pay that for the first couple days; we arrived on the weekend and the free public parking area was packed. On weekdays it wasn't difficult to find free parking nearby so we did not need to park in the private lot. The staff are totally understanding about this. During a more busy time of year it might be worth it to pay for the parking though. They do not serve breakfast there. They do have a nice coffee and hot drink dispenser in the lobby, it's free for guests. My husband is still talking about how he misses this a week after our stay. There are restaurants immediately next to the hotel, just a short stroll from your room. Our room was pretty small, but it was clean and comfortable. I did not like how loud the air conditioner was. It was cool enough that we could just leave our balcony door open. If we had had to have it on all night it would not have been good. I don't know if that is a problem in other rooms. I definitely would stay here again if we come back to San Diego. And I hope we do! read more

it was just terrible. I was traveling with my small son just the two of us to get away and have some bonding time. The first room they put us in on the first floor had construction above us so it was very so we couldn't get any rest. They did move me on request to the room above however that room number 201, which was overlooking the service stairs, about 5 feet from my room balcony. We couldn't open the curtains because there were service people looking right into our room we didn't feel safe. When I addressed it with the front desk on leaving the property as it was only one night they confirmed that management would contact me which they didn't. When I called a week later as nobody called they told me they had no record of any complaint. I asked to speak to the upper manager again, however the manager was not available. I explained the problem again was and I was looking to get a refund or partial refund. i was informed i should've let them know when i was there and they would've moved me again. and that they do not give refunds even if we felt like a privacy was an issue. I did receive an email from the operations manager after i complained again, this who did apologize and refunded me $100 on a $300 bill. One of the worst hotel experiences I've ever had. As a native San Diegan who lived in Pacific Beach for 15 years, I urge you to stay anywhere else on the beach. We paid over $400 a night and it felt more like a really bad motel than a relaxing visit back to our home town. Right from the start, our beds were full of sand. When we asked for clean bedding, we were told housekeeping had gone home--for the day--at 2 PM. They eventually dropped off sheets for us to change ourselves. The entire room was filthy: sand all over the floors, the bathroom, and the showers. It clearly hadn't been cleaned at all. We were on the bottom floor and could hear everything from the room above--people walking, running, dragging furniture around all night long. Zero soundproofing. As if that wasn't enough, our "balcony" area had no divider, so strangers (including unsupervised children) constantly sat in our chairs just outside our sliding door. It made the stay uncomfortable and robbed us of any privacy. We couldn't even enjoy the sun or the tiny, overcrowded pool area. And then came the worst part: on Friday morning, the sinks spontaneously burst and spewed foul-smelling, sulfur water all over the floor and our belongings. I ran to the front desk because no one answered the phone. Thankfully, the maintenance man was kind and helped clean up. But when I told the manager how awful the smell was, he literally shrugged and walked away. To top it all off, the rooms look nothing like the photos online. It's a complete bait-and-switch. When we asked for a room change or even a partial refund for the water damage to our belongings, we were told no. The front desk guy just shrugged again and asked if we wanted our bill then or at checkout. No apology. No accountability. Do yourself a favor--don't waste your time or money here. There are much better places to stay in San Diego. read more

Without the employees this establishment would certainly get one star or no stars. - The rates charged support a huge improvement in the physical structure. Stating the obvious, it is old and poorly maintained, unclean, a place where you want to always have shoes on or something something protecting your feet. - Before you touch anything in the room a guest will want to have plenty of clean cleaning towels, scrubbing brush, head lamp, and a can of Comet with bleach. If you spent an hour scrubbing and cleaning, covered the carpet with plastic sheeting, you will begin to enjoy the view that is obstructed by a 25 yard restaurant roof and grill exhaust fan (grilled or broiled meat is on the menu along with deep fried foods). Perhaps this is why the booking agent was careful not to say 'beachfront' and instead 'full beach view' as most units are not on the beach front. - The location affords one the opportunity to park in the three day free public parking and walk to local restaurants and attractions. At this part of the San Diego breach diaspora there is a dearth of branded hotels. In lieu of this are hotels that look similar to the Surfer Beach Hotel. It would behoove the owners to form a partnership, bulldoze their hotels, gather their capital and rebuild with the idea of building three or more modern branded hotels at the three, four, and perhaps a five star hotel. Until one of these tired hotels had some type of catastrophic failure bringing into doubt the safety of all we will have wait while the owners of these outdated properties take advantage of their unnatural position. This is the position of too much demand for hotels on the beach and limited supply that is guaranteed by the California political system. Please be prepared for the wait and stop at Costco for cleaning supplies before you check in. read more

I've been staying at The Surfer Hotel for a few years now and it's always a great experience. The location is unbeatable, right on the boardwalk with the beach just steps away. This trip I stayed in one of the newly renovated rooms and the changes really make a difference. The new flooring gives it a clean, fresh feel. I will definitely be coming back! read more

This was a terrible experience. The room was old, looks like last update was in the 70's. The carpet was disgusting. The mirrors were not even cleaned when we arrived. The sinks didn't drain right, the elevator was old and tiny. They charged us 37.50 a night for parking and we found out later if you booked directly they only charged 27.50. We had to make appointment to get room cleaned, but they didn't show up, and they didn't have washrags, only towels. Still didnt wash mirrors. They charged premium prices but it was not even close to worth it. It just felt so gross and dirty the whole time. We will never go here again. Nothing close to how they advertised. read more

One of my favorite places on earth is the surfer hotel in San Diego. Our entire family loves it. We have little kids and it's perfect for us. The beach right next to it is beautiful and the pool is heated and fun. The beds are so comfortable. The hotel staff are helpful and friendly. We can't wait to be back at the surfer. read more

Great budget friendly hotel if you want to be right on the beach!! we were treated fabulously and recommend this place. we had a small dog and were able to pop out to the beach for morning and evening off leash runs. We had lawn chairs and enjoyed sitting on the beach watching the sunset. Parking is very pricey thru the hotel and if you happen to find free parking just to the south of check in as we did we were able to refrain from needing the hotel parking. the bed was very comfy, not as many amenities as some hotels but there is an awesome coffee/walk up restaurant right on the beach walk just out our door and we ate at the attached restaurant "World Famous" and it was delicious . The view from room 315 was beautiful from the balcony. With that said, we will not return to this hotel. Outdated is not an excuse for unclean and uncomfortable. The air conditioner is portable and was dirty and noisy. It sits on the floor in front of the sliding door to the balcony. Bathroom is awful- shower head came up to my chest and I had to bend backwards to wash my hair. My husband could barely fit into the stand up shower. Dirty and dusty all over. The bed was too low to the floor and all the bedding smelled of chlorine bleach and was rough to the touch. The pillow case did not fit the pillow. The paint touch ups were sloppy and gross. Stayed in the Sunrise Suite with extremely large patio with railing on 2nd floor overlooking beach and boardwalk. Suite is ve3ry large with 2 bedrooms, one with two queens. Both rooms have walk-in closets and large screen tvs. The unit has an entry lobby, full kitchen, living room, dining room, long hallway to bathroom. several couches, with tv. Beds were very comfortable and each bedroom had its own AC unit, Absolutely loved it. The outdoor patio sits atop the World Famous restaurant below. The unit comes with a reserved parking space alongside the facility. The suite had everything, non-food, that we needed for our 3 day stay. We were told if we needed anything additional just ask. Right on the beach with a restaurant attached and another great bfast spot ten feet away plus you're right on the boardwalk on Pacific beach. Nice view of the beach if you upgrade but you are looking at the top of their old building as well and it does have a balcony. It was a older somewhat dirtyish room but I liked it had a fridge and room service. Parking is $30 a day which I thought was a lot. I might stay there again but based on the pricing, I don't think it would be on a weekend. read more

Booked for 2 adults with 2 queen beds. Paid $891 USD for 4 nights in November 2023. Paid additional $200 deposit to be returned after stay if nothing is damaged in the hotel. So a total $1091 charged on credit card. Wi-Fi was terrible. Super slow and always disconnecting. Basically non usable. Pool was not heated as advertised. Water was freezing cold so did not go swimming as wanted. No safe to store valuables. So had to lock up valuables in luggage. Only 4 hangers in the closet. No drawers for clothes except the tiny desk drawer where the bible was stored. TV was set to squished resolution instead of full 1080P HD and could not adjust it in the settings. No blow dryer provided or Iron and iron table to iron shirts. No bottled water available in the vending machine, only soda. AC was super loud so would wake you up constantly when sleeping. The only positive is the it is on the boardwalk and centrally located in Pacific Beach. So if you can tolerate these lack of essential amenities then go ahead and book but I personally would not recommend. read more

I really liked this place! The location is ten steps to the beach which was perfect. It's a little old but part of the charm. When we checked in our room wasn't clean - had dog food on the floor and the sheets were not clean and smelled like pee. They also need to work on getting the trash out of the hallways that's contributing to the fly situation. The sheets smelling like pee was pretty bad for me especially with how pricey this spot is. We also asked for a late check out and had three different people almost walk in on us. We definitely enjoyed our stay tho! Can't beat the views and bed/pillows were comfy. read more

We've stayed here twice because of the location.. its right on Pacific Beach and near a lot of places to eat. The staff is always amazing and friendly. It is an older hotel next to the beach. And it shows. The bed and the pillows were comfy. I forgot my cleaning wipes so I had to make do with paper towels and alcohol. Came out clean. Always ask for the room furthest away from the elevator and the ones facing the beach. Its totally worth it! read more

The Dirtiest Hotel I have ever stayed in. I'm sorry but for how much this hotel charges to stay a night it should be spotless. I don't care if it's on the beach or not or if it's a old building there's no excuse for how dirty and disgusting the room was. Blood on the bed sheets, Dust all over the room and AC unit and the bathroom had the worst pee odor I have ever smelled. I have stayed across the street at the Blue Sea Hotel and that hotel is Night and Day compared to this place. This is my honest review I would NOT Recommend The Sufer Beach Hotel to anyone. I just checked in and got to my room but so far everything is amazing! The room is nice and has such a good view of the ocean. I have to give a shout out to Mercedes who works at the front desk, she is friendly, happy and very informative, she even called a little after we checked in to make sure everything was great with our room, as well as gave us information on what places were open. ***UPDATE*** Now that I've actually stayed a few nights I have to take a star away. I'm still give 5 stars for service but the facilities could definitely use some fixing up and I was a little upset to find out that parking is an additional $25/day and the pool is closed. I understand why the pool is closed due to Covid but why not thank us for staying and helping keep the hotel open by waving parking. read more
