Well, it may take a few weeks for all kinds of reasons like ordering materials, the artist has a backlog... etc? If you want 'quick' you should go to a commercial, boring, big box jeweler. Ok, mini rant over. Let's talk about Mark and the work he has done for me and my husband. My husband wanted to have a custom engagement ring made for me. He had a design in mind and a recommendation from a family member to see Mark. Mark gave great advice on sizing, diamond quality and integrity of the band design. He even showed my husband the difference between Russian and Israeli cut diamonds (um, huge difference). Without Mark's advice I would have gotten a ring from somewhere else that needs adjusting all the time (I had a lot of single prong stuff in mind for the band, bad idea) . Mark can also order directly from a manufacturer, which is what we did for our wedding bands. It's cheaper than custom and, like another reviewer said, the prices are clearly stated in the manufacturer's ordering book at market prices. In the end the design I wanted had already been made - so why have it done at a custom price? I appreciated Mark's honesty and transparency on that decision. Lastly, Mark and his wife are kind and fair people. No pressuring you into something you don't want or can't afford. We had a great buying experience for all three purchases so far.

Nonetheless, I love the craft, the artistry, and the ritual of fountain pens. (Plus, the collecting community is just great, in my experience.) So, after having moved to Carmel a few months ago, I ran across mention of Avalon Jewelers as being one of the go-to shops in the Indy area. Plus, they manufacture Private Reserve Ink, which is fantastic stuff, so all the more reason to stop by. Being nearby, I decided that this little shop on Main St. in Zionsville merited a visit. Great decision! First of all, Susan, the proprietor, could not be more of a joy. I stopped in just expecting to have a look around and pick up a Sheaffer Snorkel that I saw online at a great price. I ended up standing around talking with her for almost an hour! She's not just someone who runs a jewelry store that happens to sell pens on the side; she loves fountain pens--their history, their beauty, their functionality. She's an example of what makes the FP community so great. As for Avalon's pen selection, it's fantastic. They offer a wide variety of new and vintage pens, including an astonishing array of Esterbrooks (my favorite daily writer because they're reliable workhorses). I'm no expert on pricing, but they seem quite reasonable. If someone out there was willing to gift me a few grand, I'd be more than happy to buy up their pen inventory. ;] If you're in Zionsville and have any appreciation for fine writing instruments, you owe it to yourself to stop in here. And if you don't have an appreciation for them, stopping in and talking to Susan will no doubt change that! I plan on making many, many more trips to visit and to shop. This jeweler is a joke. He's got a real attitude problem and he destroyed a very expensive blue…read morediamond ring. Here he claims to be a bench jeweler of 37 years and burned the blue diamond because he was too lazy to remove it from the setting before he added heat. He's a flop if you ask me. I also had him rhodium plate a few rings and it was so thin it wore off in days. Another jeweler did it before him, and it lasted several years. I tried to give this so called jeweler a chance, but his work is so sub par I couldn't trust him anymore. Now I have to take him to court to get my ring replaced that he ruined. When I confronted him I was asked to not come back and hung up on. He's unprofessional, his breath smells and his hygiene is questionable. Also, they have all cz in the case and a small selection. It's mostly silver and junk. His wife cannot even run the credit card machine without help. These two should not be in business. I am not even convinced he's a true jeweler. He sells more glass and fake stuff than real. The store has a weird smell in it, and it's very old and outdated.. the few nice pieces they have are very overpriced and that's probably why they sit and sit. I will never be back as I spent a great deal of money to only have them ruin my 2500 ring and then laugh about it. Also, they talk badly about other customers when they leave as I have witnessed this many times as other customers did drop offs. They are the most unprofessional bunch of people I have ever seen. They smoke right in front of the door and it just looks unprofessional And the real treat is they bring all the grandkids to work to run around you and torment you while you're shopping. Find a real jeweler! Please! This is a joke of a place!
