First of all, I want to say this has been one of my favorite coffee spots in san diego for years…read more The campfire mocha is amazing and worth every penny. Ive brought friends here in the past and have always gotten positive feedback afterwards. Recently though, it feels like it's lost a little of its charm. The menu needs updating because with all the crossed out items on the board, it looks a little low end and like they're out of things. But they also always seem to be out of multiple items when I come these days. There's no food options any more most of the time, but the display cases remain. And seating... it feels like they got rid of 1-2 tables and the tables that were outside. There never seems to be enough seating so it's both cramped while also empty looking now. They have these side benches to sit on, but no one ever uses them because they're not super comfortable or good to chat with anyone with. Also, the bathroom. It's usually open, but twice now Ive been in there where there's zero toilet paper or the paper towel dispenser is out, but someone has just put a roll on top to tear at your own will. I loved this place so I hate saying more negative than good. The drinks remain amazing, but for a spot that is so popular, it's losing some of its own charm.

The space itself is beautiful. Set within the mall but housed in its own standalone brick-and-mortar building, the architecture really sets it apart and makes the place feel warm and inviting. The see-through windows, the bar seating along the windows that open up, and the one-way traffic across the cafe...all screams cozy and articulate. I like that they post the menus outside too, in case of long lines, so that you don't flip and freak out when you get to the front and don't know what to order. What I've tried off their menu so far, were Americanos, Lattes, hot and cold. Cold drinks are my default though, you can never go wrong with iced coffee. Their white chocolate is popular, they run out quick, but regular choco does well in a pinch. I absolutely love the part where they give the cup to you at the end of the bar, for adjustments and adding in more milk/sugar. And also to see latte art before closing your cup. I don't know what it is, but that part in aspect allows you to take some time to appreciate coffee in general and then go back to the real world. It's just the little things that matter. Also, the employees are just always super uber nice here. They don't judge you for ordering two cups of coffee in one go, they actually commend the action!

COFFEE SHOP INSIDE the DELI (3 stars)…read more I was under the impression this was a coffee shop/roaster but I was mistaken (maybe, maybe not, I don't know). This is inside a mom and pop deli ran by the same 2 owners and not so much a coffee shop but a place "to get a quick up of coffee". Finding this place was easy, right off the main road between small offices and warehouses, with a couple tables outside, a sign that says coffee, and the deli. I walked in confused asking someone where is Aperture Coffee and was old inside (Keary Mesa Deli). It seemed like a popular place for both food and coffee. Upon walking in, the place is small with a few seats. I saw only three bags of their brand beans, two owners who are busy with the morning crowd of people ordering breakfast items, a nothing special espresso machine, and not one to really judge but they didn't look like hardcore coffee connoisseur. CARAMEL ICED LATTE ($5.50) - it was average. the strength in their beans was medium roast but I didn't fill any jitter thru the day. The caramel syrup flavor was a heavy pour and covered up any discovery of bean profile. I can pass on the coffee and may come back to try Kearny Mesa Deli for a sandwich.

I got the iced lavender latte and an iced matcha green tea. The matcha was pretty good and tasted matcha-y and not watered down . The lavender latte was also good and not too sweet like some place's lattes. Overall, I'd love to come back but the hours are kind of restrictive as they're not open on weekends and they close at 2PM. The service is friendly and quick as well, and plenty of parking.

If I could give this location 10 stars I would, and it's all thanks to the lovely baristas led by their manager Jules. I came to this location to redeem my hankering for their mocha, as La Jolla ran out of oat milk, which is basically my nightmare as a lactose-intolerant coffee fiend. BIG TIP: the Blue Bottle mocha is my favorite of all coffee shop mochas because a) it is dairy free and b) they use chocolate from local chocolate makers. Local business win! After the very kind barista upfront commiserated with me for not being able to get my star mocha the day before, my husband ambled up to the front and asked if they had a bag of Philippine beans to buy -- a new bean they're featuring. The manager, Jules, overheard and relayed that they sadly did not... !! BUT !! "I brought a bag for my team to try," he said. "My shift is over now... but I can brew it for you to taste, too." He didn't have to do that, but he was sooo kind to offer. And so, Jules stuck around another ~10+ minutes, all to give my husband a taste of the beans he simply asked about. What I love about coffee culture is the passion of the baristas and their willingness to share this with you. Jules, my husband, and I stood around talking about our favorite coffee spots and the coffee culture from here to LA for a few more minutes, before letting him go on about his day. Jules really understands hospitality in a way that many establishments don't get, and I truly love how it brings people together. Thank you Jules for showing us -- hospitality is not dead. I hope we get to meet again the next time we visit!
